Chapter 11

CHAPTER ELEVEN

NATE

The familiar antiseptic smell of VitaLabs hits me as I step through the sliding glass doors, my footsteps echoing in the cavernous lobby. The weight of our recent revelations hangs heavy on my shoulders, a burden I've carried since we uncovered the depth of corruption in the surrogacy program. Riley's presence beside me is a beacon of comfort in the chaos that threatens to swallow us whole.

I glance at her, taking in the determined set of her jaw, the fire in her eyes. She's as beautiful as she is fierce, and for a moment, I'm struck by how lucky I am to have her by my side.

"You okay, Nate?" Riley asks, her hand finding mine. Her touch draws me out of my thoughts, grounding me in the present.

I nod, jaw clenched. "Just... a lot on my mind." The words feel hollow, inadequate to express the turmoil roiling inside me. The truth is, I'm terrified of failing her, of losing her to the darkness we've uncovered.

Riley squeezes my hand, her eyes searching mine. "No matter what happens, I'm here for you. We're in this together, remember?"

I pull her close, burying my face in the crook of her neck, inhaling her scent—a mix of lavender and something uniquely Riley. It calms me, centers me. "I know, Ri. I just... I can't lose you. I won't let anyone hurt you."

She cups my face in her hands, her gaze unwavering. "You won't lose me, Nate. We can do this."

As I look into Riley's eyes, I see a strength there that mirrors my own. She believes in me, in us. And for now, that's enough.

We make our way through the bustling corridors of VitaLabs, the air thick with tension. Employees scurry past, their heads down, avoiding eye contact. They can sense the storm brewing, even if they don't know the details.

Back in my office, I sink into my leather chair, the familiar surroundings doing little to ease my anxiety. Riley perches on the edge of my desk, her presence a comforting constant.

That's when I see it—a new email notification blinking on my computer screen. My stomach drops as I read the message:

Mr. Russo,

Your meddling has not gone unnoticed. We know about your little investigation with Dr. Davis. Back off now, or we'll be forced to take action. Dr. Davis might find her promising career cut tragically short. Such a shame when young doctors have 'accidents', isn't it?

This is your only warning.

- A Friend

My heart thunders against my ribs, a sickening dread settling in the pit of my stomach. They know about our investigation, and they're threatening Riley.

"Nate? What is it?" Riley's voice cuts through my panic. I realize I've been staring at the screen for a while now.

I turn the monitor towards her, watching as she reads the message, her expression hardening.

"Those fucking cowards," she spits out, her eyes flashing with anger. "They think they can scare us off with threats?"

I stand up, pacing the room, my mind whirling. "This is serious, Riley. They're not just threatening the investigation anymore. They're threatening you."

She steps in front of me, halting my restless movement. "I knew the risks when I got involved, Nate. We both did. We can't back down now, not when we're so close to exposing the truth."

I run a hand through my hair, frustration and fear warring inside me. "I can't let them hurt you, Ri. You're... you're everything to me. The one bright spot in this whole mess."

Riley's expression softens, her hand coming up to cup my cheek. "And you're everything to me, Nate. But we have to see this through. For all the families affected by this scandal, for all the people who've been hurt. We can't let fear stop us."

I lean into her touch, drawing strength from her unwavering resolve. She's right, of course.

"Okay," I say, my voice steadier than I feel. "But we need to be smart about this. We can't take any unnecessary risks."

Riley nods, a small smile playing at her lips. "Agreed. So, what's our next move, Maverick?"

The use of my codename, spoken with playful sarcasm, now carries a note of affection that warms me from the inside out.

"We confront the source," I say, tenacity replacing fear. "It's time we had a little chat with Dr. Blackwell."

As we make our way to Dr. Blackwell's office, I can't help but think back to how this all started. The anonymous tip from the Silencebreakers platform, the late nights poring over documents, the gradual unraveling of the surrogacy scandal. It feels like a lifetime ago, and yet, in many ways, our journey is just beginning.

I pause outside Dr. Blackwell's door, steeling myself for the confrontation ahead. Riley's hand finds mine, squeezing gently.

"Ready?" she asks, her voice soft but resolute.

I nod "It’s time."

We stride into Dr. Blackwell's office, my heart pounding like a jackhammer. The man himself sits behind his imposing desk, a picture of calm arrogance.

"Nate Russo," he drawls, leaning back in his chair. "To what do I owe the pleasure?"

I clench my jaw, fighting the urge to throttle him. "Cut the shit, Dr. Blackwell. You know exactly why we're here."

His eyes narrow, a flicker of malice in their depths. "Ah, yes. Your little investigation with the pretty Dr. Davis?"

The mention of her name sends a surge of protectiveness through me. "Leave her out of this," I growl.

I step forward, placing myself between Riley and Dr. Blackwell. My body acts as a shield, blocking her from his piercing gaze. The tension in the room is palpable, and I can feel Riley's presence behind me, her warmth radiating against my back. My jaw clenches as I stare down the man who dares to threaten her. Every protective instinct in me surges to the forefront, ready to defend her at all costs.

Dr. Blackwell chuckles, a cold, mirthless sound that sends a chill through my bones. "But she's the heart of the matter, isn't she? The reason you're sticking your nose where it doesn't belong."

I lean forward, my voice low and deadly. "We’re on to you, Dr. Blackwell. This game of yours ends now."

He meets my gaze, unflinching. "You have no idea what you're up against, Russo. You might own the hospital, but in this ‘game,’ you’re only a pawn."

I feel a flicker of doubt, a whisper of fear. What if he's right? What if I'm in over my head? But then I look at Riley, of the strength in her eyes, the love in her touch. I can't let her down.

"You're wrong," I say, my voice steady despite the churning in my gut. "You might think you have everything figured out, but you’re not invincible. You’re going to pay for your crimes."

Dr. Blackwell leans back, a cold smile playing at his lips. "We'll see about that, Russo. But remember... I know your weaknesses. And I won't hesitate to exploit them."

The threat hangs heavy in the air, a promise of retribution. Fear twists like a knife in my gut. But I won't let it break me.

I stand tall, my gaze locked with Dr. Blackwell's. "This isn't over," I say, my voice a low growl. "Not by a long shot." My fists clench at my sides, determination coursing through my veins. I won't let him win this battle.

And with that, we turn and walk away, my mind racing with the enormity of the task ahead.

As we make our way out of VitaLabs, my stomach in knots, Dr. Blackwell's threats echo in my mind like a twisted symphony. I need to see Riley safely home, to make sure she's protected.

"I'm coming with you," I tell her as we reach her car. It's not a question.

Riley nods, understanding the fear behind my words. "Okay, Nate. Let's go."

The drive to Riley's apartment is tense, filled with stolen glances and unspoken worries. When we finally reach her place, I insist on checking every room, every closet, before I let myself relax even a fraction.

"Nate," Riley says softly, pulling me close once I've finished my paranoid sweep. "We're okay. We're safe here."

I nod, trying to believe her words. That's when I spot something over her shoulder—a familiar mask hanging on the wall. My heart skips a beat as realization dawns.

"Riley," I breathe, "that mask... it's from the charity gala, isn't it? How did I not notice it before?"

She turns to look at the mask, then back at me with a small smile. "Oh, I just put it up today. I found it while unpacking some boxes I'd forgotten about. Why?"

"It was you," I say, my voice filled with awe. "That night at the gala, the woman I danced with... it was you all along."

Riley's eyes widen, her mouth falling open in shock. "Wait, what? You... you were my mystery dance partner with the gold mask?"

I nod, watching as emotions play across her face—surprise, disbelief, and then a dawning joy.

"Oh my God," she whispers, her hands trembling as she touches my face. "I've been thinking about that night, about you, ever since it happened. I never thought I'd see you again, and all this time..."

"All this time, we've been right here," I finish for her, pulling her closer. "And if you hadn't unpacked that mask today, who knows how long it might have taken us to figure it out. Riley, I haven't been able to stop thinking about that night, about you. And now, knowing it was you all along... God, Riley, I love you. I love you so fucking much it scares me."

Riley's eyes fill with tears, her breath catching. "Nate, I... I can't believe this. I've been falling for you, day by day, and now to find out you're also the man who's been haunting my dreams since that night... I love you too. So much."

Her words hit me like a tidal wave, washing away all my fears and doubts. I pull her into a kiss, pouring every ounce of love and passion I feel into it. Riley responds with equal fervor, her body melting against mine.

When we finally break apart, both breathless, Riley looks up at me with wonder in her eyes. "I never thought I'd find you again, my mystery man. And now here you are, and you're Nate, and you love me..."

I brush away a tear that's escaped down her cheek. "I do love you, Riley. More than I've ever loved anyone or anything in my life."

She smiles, radiant and beautiful. "I love you too, Nate. God, I love you."

As I hold her close, I can't shake the sense of dread that's settling in my bones. Something's coming, something big.

But looking into Riley's eyes, feeling the warmth of her in my arms, I know that we can weather any storm. We've found each other twice now—first at the gala, and then again through this investigation. It feels like fate, like we were meant to be here, in this moment, fighting this fight side by side.

"We should get some rest," Riley murmurs, her head resting on my chest. "Tomorrow's going to be a long day."

I nod, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "You're right. But Riley?"

She looks up at me, her eyes questioning.

"No matter what happens, no matter how dark things get, I want you to know that loving you... it's the best thing that's ever happened to me."

Riley's smile is like the sun breaking through storm clouds. "And loving you, Nate Russo, is the best decision I've ever made."

As we settle in for the night, wrapped in each other's arms, I can't shake the feeling that we're standing on the precipice of something monumental. The road ahead is fraught with danger, filled with enemies lurking in the shadows. But with Riley by my side, I'm ready to face whatever comes our way.

Tomorrow, we'll continue our fight. We'll dig deeper, push harder, and do whatever it takes to expose the truth. But for now, in this moment, I allow myself to simply be. To hold the woman I love, to feel her heartbeat against mine, and to dream of a future where justice prevails and our love conquers all.
