Chapter 21

CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

NATE

I lean against the floor-to-ceiling windows, gazing out at the glittering lights of Metrotech City sprawling before me. The view from the penthouse never fails to take my breath away, but tonight, it's the overwhelming sense of gratitude that steals the air from my lungs.

Riley's reflection appears beside mine in the glass, her emerald eyes shining with the same emotions swirling inside me. She slips her arms around my waist from behind, pressing her cheek against my back. "Penny for your thoughts, Nate?"

I cover her hands with mine, marveling at how perfectly they fit together. "Just thinking about how incredible this journey has been. From that first night at the gala to taking down corruption at the highest levels... I never could have done it without you, Riles."

She comes around to face me, cupping my jaw with a tenderness that makes my heart ache. "We did it together, Nate. You and me against the world, remember?"

I press my forehead to hers, breathing her in. Lavender, the scent of my home. "You changed everything for me. Showed me what really matters."

"And you showed me what it means to fight for something bigger than myself. To never stop pursuing truth and justice." Her lips quirk into the crooked smile I adore.

I capture her mouth in a searing kiss, pouring every ounce of love and devotion I possess into the caress of my lips on hers. When we finally break apart, I'm grinning like a fool. "So, Dr. Davis, now that we've conquered the medical world, what's next on the agenda?"

Her eyes sparkle with mischief and promise. "Well, Mr. Russo, I seem to recall you mentioning something about whisking me away on a top secret vacation to celebrate..."

I throw my head back and laugh, joy bubbling up inside me like champagne. "Your wish is my command, sweetheart. But first..." I scoop her up bridal style, relishing her shriek of surprise. "I believe I owe my beautiful partner in crime some quality alone time."

As I carry her off to our bedroom, trading playful kisses and heated glances, I'm suffused with a bone-deep contentment I've never known before.

The golden glow of sunset filters through the windows, casting a warm halo around Riley's auburn hair as she leans against the balcony railing. My heart hammers against my ribs, every beat whispering her name. This is it. The moment I've been dreaming of since the day she crashed into my life and turned my world upside down.

I slip my hand into my pocket, fingers closing around the small velvet box. "Riles, there's something I need to ask you."

She turns to face me, emerald eyes sparkling with curiosity and a hint of mischief. "What's on your mind, Maverick?"

I take a deep breath, trying to steady the nerves ricocheting through my body. "You know, when I first met you, I thought I had it all figured out. Money, success, adrenaline highs... I didn't know what I was missing."

Riley tilts her head, a soft smile playing at the corners of her mouth. "And what were you missing, Nate?"

"You." The word falls from my lips like a prayer. "I was missing you, Riley. The piece of my soul I didn't even know was lost until you came along and made me whole."

Tears shimmer in her eyes as I sink to one knee, pulling the ring box from my pocket. "You're my partner, my best friend, my everything. I don't want to spend another day without you by my side." I flip open the box, revealing the diamond that sparkles like starlight. "Riley Davis, will you marry me?"

A breathless laugh escapes her, mingling with the joyful tears now streaming down her cheeks. "Yes, Nate. God, yes!"

I slide the ring onto her finger, my own vision blurring with the intensity of the moment. Then I'm on my feet, crushing her against my chest as our lips meet in a fierce, passionate kiss. The rest of the world falls away, narrowing to this perfect slice of time. Riley in my arms, our hearts beating in sync.

"So, future Mrs. Russo," I grin, pulling Riley closer as we lounge on the sofa, "what's the first order of business now that we're engaged?"

She laughs, that musical sound that never fails to light up my whole world. "Well, Mr. Maverick, I think we should probably let our friends and family know before we start planning our world domination."

"Mmm, I like the sound of that. You and me, taking on the universe together." I nuzzle into her neck, breathing in the intoxicating scent of her. "With that big, brilliant brain of yours and my devilish charm, we'll be unstoppable."

Riley swats at my chest playfully. "Don't forget my compassion and your courage, Nate."

I lace my fingers with hers, marveling at the way her engagement ring catches the light. "I want to build a future with you that's based on innovation, integrity, and making a positive impact. Whether it's through our work at VitaLabs and the hospital or supporting other changemakers, I know we can create something extraordinary together."

Riley's eyes shimmer with emotion, her smile so radiant it steals my breath. "You inspire me every day, Nate. Your determination, your passion, your unwavering commitment to doing good... I'm so proud to stand by your side."

Riley's laughter rings out like music as we step back inside the penthouse, hand in hand. I swear she's never looked more beautiful. We sink onto the plush sofa, our bodies naturally gravitating towards each other.

"Can you believe it, Nate?" she whispers, her eyes shining with a mix of joy and disbelief. "We're actually engaged. This is really happening."

I brush a stray lock of hair from her face, my fingers lingering on the silky smoothness of her skin. "It's like a dream come true, Riles. I keep thinking I'm going to wake up and find out this was all just a figment of my imagination."

She leans in, her lips brushing against mine in a feather-light kiss. "It's real, Maverick. You and me, together forever. And I can't wait to see what the future holds for us."

I pull her closer, my heart swelling with a love so fierce it steals my breath. "I want to build something extraordinary with you, sweetheart. A life, a legacy, a world where we use our strengths to make a real difference."

As we sit there, wrapped in each other's arms, I'm suffused with a sense of peace and purpose unlike anything I've ever known.

My phone buzzes insistently in my pocket, breaking the serenity of the moment. I pull it out, my brow furrowing as I read the cryptic message from Liam.

"What is it, Nate?" Riley asks, her hand coming to rest on my arm, the warmth of her touch grounding me.

I glance up, meeting her curious gaze. "It's Liam. Says he's stumbled onto something big and needs our help."

Her eyes sparkle with intrigue, that familiar thrill of a new challenge lighting up her face. "Well, well, looks like the dynamic duo might be needed once again."

I can't help but chuckle, pulling her close and pressing a kiss to her temple. "You just can't resist a good mystery, can you, Riles?"

She grins, her arms snaking around my waist. "You know me too well, Maverick. Besides, we did promise to stand together, no matter what. And I've got a feeling this is going to be one hell of a ride."

"With you by my side, sweetheart, I'm ready for anything."

When we break apart, I rest my forehead against hers, my voice low and filled with conviction. "Whatever Liam's gotten himself into, we’ll be there as partners in crime."

Riley nods, her fingers threading through my hair. "Damn straight.”

And there, in the sanctuary of our home, with the love of my life in my arms and the promise of a new adventure on the horizon, I've never felt more alive, more complete. Bring it on, universe. We're ready for you.
