186. ‘Fear Not, Sister’

‘Fear Not, Sister’

Metis’s voice was soft and gentle,

but my eye stayed on her sword.

While it was ugly, made with unskilled hands,

I knew the damage adamantine

weapons could do from healing

hundreds of my brothers.

‘What are you saying, Metis?’

I asked her quietly, the hiss

hiding the tremor of fear in my own voice.

Outside my door, I heard movement.

I turned to meet her eyes again.

‘You must hurry and tell me.’

‘I know you have always longed for

goddesshood. To be valued.

And why would you not?

You are the eldest of the Titan children,

and like Asteria and me, you too

are blessed with strange gifts.’

She continued, her voice steady.

‘What if I told you that for your loyalty,

Zeus will grant you goddesshood?

He will grant you so many gifts

that your name will be on every

single mortal’s lips. Songs

will be sung about you, Styx.’

I took a deep breath,

my whole body turned rigid.

But was this rigidity

fear?

Or was it… hope?
