Chapter 10 Callum
CALLUM
It’s been another couple of weeks since I’ve seen my Sunshine, but the countdown is on. Kyra is out having some girl time with Nyx, but they are supposed to be coming back here to hang out for the night.
Nyx was telling me about their plans this morning at breakfast. I am currently living in my brother's guest house. While it has its own kitchen, I still like to go up to the house and have meals with them when I know they are home. It’s nice to be surrounded by people; it makes me feel not so alone.
The rhythmic sound from shooting lulls me into a sense of relaxation.
This keeps me sane. When I woke up in the German hospital, and they told me I wouldn’t be able to perform at my normal levels, my world came crashing down.
My knee was completely blown out with multiple ligaments damaged.
I had to work to learn how to walk without such an obvious limp.
The Marine Corps gave me two options: move to another position or medically retire.
I was not planning to retire anytime soon, needing the routine to keep my sanity, but a desk job is not for me.
After a long chat with Graham and my parents, I was offered a position with Devil Dog Security.
Not that I ever thought I wouldn’t be welcomed with open arms by my brother.
This will allow me to still use my skills without being locked behind a desk. That’s Graham and Demitri’s job.
Checking my watch, I see it’s after 3 pm.
The girls should be home by now. Locking up the firearms in the gun safe and cleaning up any spent shells, I make my way back up to the main house.
The excitement to see my Sunshine vibrates just below the surface.
Jogging up to the back door, I scan my fingerprint to let me in.
“Hey girls!” I call out through the house as I slide the glass door open.
The silence is deafening. There is no one here.
Midnight comes walking into the dining room and rubs against my leg.
He is also waiting for his momma to come home.
Midnight is Nyx’s all-black cat. The two of them moved in with Graham and Demitri after her stalker broke into her apartment and covered everything in paint.
Leaning over, I scoop up the kitty to give him some love while I walk towards the stairs.
Maybe they are upstairs? While I try to convince myself they are just the quietest two girls ever, my stomach drops.
They aren’t here. I know they aren’t here.
Midnight jumps out of my arms onto the guest bed.
Pulling my phone out of my pocket, I text my brother.
Me: Hey, aren’t the girls supposed to be at the house this afternoon?
Graham: Ya, they should be back by now.
Me: They aren’t in the house.
Fuck, Sunshine, where are you?
It’s been three fucking days, and we can’t find anything on the girls. Demitri and Graham are losing their damn minds. Not that I blame them. Kyra isn’t even mine yet, and I’m shocked that I wasn’t the one to punch Mike this afternoon.
We just got back from visiting Kyra’s fiancé with Captain Montgomery, and he is just as big a douche as I thought.
Demitri, the lucky bastard, punched him in the face.
He lost complete control of himself when Mike decided to blame Nyx for the abduction.
Granted, he just did what we were all thinking.
“Hey, Cal.” Graham walks up to where I’m sitting on the couch in their living room. I’ve been sleeping in the house since the girls have been gone because I don’t want to be too far away if they have a breakthrough.
“What’s up, Graham?” I look up at him, and I can see the bags under his eyes from the lack of sleep.
Today is the first time he’s walked away from his computer since it happened. The fresh air probably did him some good, but he’s itching to get back to looking.
“How are you doing?” He sits down next to me.
“Shouldn’t I be asking you this? Nyx is your girl.” I let out a small chuckle.
“Yes. But we all know that you are crushing on Kyra, HARD.” I can feel my cheek flush at his words. Fuck, they are on to me. “You don’t have to hide it, little bro. If it’s anything like when I fell for Nyx, it just happens. Completely out of your control, and that is how love is.”
I just nod my head before leaning over and resting my elbows on my knees.
“What am I supposed to do if we don’t save them?”
“That’s not going to happen. I need my Little Witch back, and we will give you and Kyra a fighting chance.” He slaps me on the back a couple of times before standing back up. “Back to the search. We will find them.”
I watch him retreat back upstairs to his room with the tiniest bit of hope shining in my chest. We have the best hacker we know on the case, looking for the girls. If Graham can’t find them, no one can.
