8. Dream #2
I reached for my handgun when a shot rang past my ear.
Dream immediately crouched, covering her ears as I watched the man stumble while clutching his bleeding shoulder.
My head spun to see Haze smiling from the driver’s seat, smoking his blunt while Indigo, who I didn’t notice before, was hanging out the passenger side window with a gun in hand.
Fucking twins.
I swerved the bike and jumped from it, throwing my helmet aside as I ran to Dream. “Dream?” Her head up at my voice and when I was close enough, threw her arms around me.
“I knew you’d come for me,” she whispered.
I held her close, sighing. “Always, cottontail.”
She pulled back and looked past me at my younger siblings. “Are those—”
I nodded. “Yeah.”
Just then, the back door swung open and Kief and more of his men stepped outside. “Well, well ,well, if it isn’t my dear cousin, Felix.” He noticed the twins and his expression lifted. “My, it’s a family reunion!”
Fucking Kief.
I reached for my gun and whispered to Dream, “Get in the car.”
“Not without you.”
I eyed her closely and knew it was pointless to argue. “Do you have it?” She nodded. “Good. Now, when I stand up, I want you to run to the car.” Her brows furrowed. “Don’t worry.” I kissed her forehead. “I’ll be right behind you.”
I carefully shuffled her behind me and looked at my cousin. “Kief,” I drawled. “This is between you and me. You leave them out of it.”
He grinned and shook his head. “No can do, Felix. And now I know you have a weakness, I plan to use her against you.”
Like hell.
I shot to my feet, pulling the trigger as I took down one of his men. A bullet whizzed past me as another fell back.
Haze’s voice shouted from behind me. “Good shot, little sis.”
Dream sprinted toward the car as Haze reached around and opened the door for her. “Felix!” she shouted. I shot again, watching as Kief ducked behind one of his men like a fucking coward.
I wanted to take him down, to end all this right here, but I knew it wasn’t the time.
“Fuck.” I lowered my gun and sprinted back toward the car. Dream pulled me as Haze revved the engine, spinning the tires until they smoked. The door slammed shut and he shot out of the parking lot.
Dream examined me, frantically asking if I was okay. I nodded.
“Good.” She then slapped me, hard. “Don’t you ever fucking do that again!” I blinked, shocked by how upset she was. Haze snickered to himself as Indigo shoved him. “You pinky promised!” Her eyes watered and I realized how scared she must’ve been. Not of getting hurt herself, but of losing me.
Now I feel like an ass.
I pulled her into me, hugging her tight. “I’m sorry,” I breathed against her hair.
Indigo cleared her throat as Haze looked in the rearview mirror at us. I shot him an annoyed look. “What? Aren't you going to introduce us?”
“The arrogant asshole driving is my baby brother, Haze.” His smile fell at the nickname, which made me happy. “And in the passenger seat is—”
Indigo spun in her seat, her black hair swaying around her face as her green eyes sparkled. “I’m Indigo, but you can call me Indi.”
“They’re twins,” Dream stated.
Indigo chuckled. “Good eye. Not many people think we look alike.” She gripped Haze’s thigh, then took the blunt from him, drawing out a long hit. She exhaled, the overwhelming smell of weed filling the car.
I groaned and kicked the back of Haze’s seat. “You better get this thing detailed whenever you decide to finally give it back to me.”
My brother scoffed, wearing that damn grin he loved so much. “Sure thing, hermano.” Indi smiled at her twin while rubbing his thigh.
Dream leaned in close and whispered into my ear, “Am I crazy…or are they—” I stopped her and inclined my head. She blinked and nodded, accepting their relationship without any judgement or care. “Gotcha.”
“So, what’s the pla—” Shots sprayed through the car from behind, shattering the rear window. “Fuck!” Haze hit the gas and sped off, trying to outrun the car.
I checked on Dream, making sure she was okay. Headlights flashed and we both turned around, noticing a blacked-out SUV with Kief and his men inside. A second, then third vehicle appeared, surrounding the car. We all looked at one another, realizing the situation we were in.
“Haze.” My brother eyed me from the rearview mirror. “I got this.” He switched gears, speeding the car down the highway to give us some distance.
Indigo threw the blunt out her window and popped the glove box open, piecing together a Smith & Wesson M&P M2.0, complete with a silencer to keep from drawing any unwanted attention. She loaded the magazine and handed it to Haze.
I pulled a second magazine from my backpack, reloading my handgun as another round of bullets sprayed the car. Haze turned off and exited the highway, speeding through the streets as the other cars followed.
I held my ears and tried to ignore the loud ringing.
Dream tapped my shoulder and held her hand out to me. “Here.” I looked down at her opened palm, noticing a pair of earplugs. She smiled, offering them to me. “I’ve kept a pair on me ever since the gun range…just in case.”
I took the earplugs and shoved them into my ears, kissing her in the process.
She looked past me as one of the SUVs sped up parallel to us.
“Watch out!” Dream tackled me as the passenger shot through the back window.
She raised her arm, aiming her brightly-colored gun as she shot back, burying her bullet into the center of his forehead.
“Great shot!” Indigo squealed. Dream reached across and high-fived my little sister.
“Not the time!” I shouted, sitting up as I spun Dream around and shot the driver.
The SUV immediately swerved and wrecked into oncoming traffic.
Headlights sped toward us from behind as Kief and his driver rammed into us, knocking Dream and I forward.
“Stop fucking up my car!” I bellowed, shooting at them.
My bullets shattered the windshield as they hit their brakes, allowing the third SUV to take the lead.
You would run from a fight, cousin.
“Baby sis.” Indigo turned to look at me.
“Switch with me.” She didn’t argue, crawling over into the backseat as I took the passenger one.
“Bag.” She tossed me my backpack and I pulled out some more ammunition.
I then rustled with a bag of hard candies, immediately popping one into my mouth.
“Here.” I handed one back to Dream, who opened her mouth and extended her tongue for me as I placed it in her mouth.
“You guys are crazy,” Haze playfully scoffed.
I shot him a look. “As crazy as fucking your own twin?” He shot me a look which only made me smile.
“Yeah, that’s what I thought.” I looked at the way ahead and then to the car tailing us.
“When we pass that building, I’m going to need you to take a sharp right and drift the car enough to give me a clear shot. ”
My brother side-eyed me. “You sure that’s a good idea?” I nodded, sucking on the sweet candy. He groaned again. “You're the boss.”
And just as I’d instructed him, he passed the building and whipped the car in a sharp right turn, then drifted.
“Get down!” Indigo pulled Dream, and they ducked.
I leaned out the passenger window and shot up the SUV that sped toward us.
The passenger and driver of the vehicle both shot back, shattering the remaining windows in my car.
Motherfuckers!
My arm swung and I shot their front tire. It popped as the SUV swerved hard, the momentum of speed making the other vehicle roll in our direction. “Go! Go! Go!” I slapped the car as Haze put it into drive and sped off before it could crash into us.
“Where’s Kief?” he asked. I shot him a look as the third SUV reappeared, driving after us.
The two women in the back slowly raised, brushing shards of broken glass from their hair and bodies. I turned to look at them, making sure they were okay.
Indigo brushed the glass from her lap, leaning forward to check on Haze as we switched seats again. “Are you okay?” I checked Dream closer. She nodded.
My brother shot a glare through the rearview mirror that was now barely hanging on. “I hate to break up your little moment, but we got a problem.” We all looked forward to see blue and red lights, followed by sirens.
Dream tapped my shoulder. “I think we have a bigger problem.” She pointed to the SUV that was heading straight for us. Kief grinned, raising a gun.
“Watch out!” Gunshots hit the car, barely missing Indigo.
Haze saw that and turned to look at Kief, his eyes burning.
“Fuck this—” He whipped the car around to face the SUV, then hung out the driver’s side window and peppered the windshield with bullets until he fully emptied his clip.
Indigo controlled the steering wheel and spun the car back around as we then headed away from the police, Kief still tailing us.
Haze tossed his weapon and grabbed the steering wheel again, glancing between the road and his twin.
“Are you okay?” She nodded. “Let me see!” He checked her closely, raging with anger.
Oh, you got fucking lucky, Kief.
Haze recklessly drove us away and onto the overpass. Unfortunately, Kief stayed close behind.
“Fuck!” I checked my magazine. “I’m out of ammo.” Indigo did the same, realizing she was almost out as well. Dream tried to offer me hers, but I refused to take it. “Save that for later. Trust me.” She nodded, holding it tight.
The BMW shot forward as the SUV rammed into us.
The car scraped the side of the overpass, shooting sparks all through the broken windows.
Haze was able to break away, but Kief’s driver just kept coming after us.
Indigo tried to take their tires out, but the wind was unpredictable and made it hard to land the shots.
“We need a plan!” Haze shouted, struggling to keep us separated. “At this rate he’s going to send us over!”
I looked around, thinking on my feet. “Next time he sends us into the wall, shift gears and spin the car!”
“What?!” the twins shouted in unison.
