CHAPTER FOUR #5
He pointed toward the floor for emphasis.
"...that she finally has someone she can depend on."
Michael looked at him for a long moment.
"Those aren't the same thing."
John's frustration finally began to show.
"You twisted my words."
Michael slowly shook his head.
"No."
His voice had grown quieter.
"I finally heard them clearly." The hallway suddenly felt much smaller. John stared at the boy he'd called his best friend for almost ten years.
"...This is Amanda talking."
Michael's eyes narrowed immediately.
"Leave her out of it."
John scoffed.
"No."
He took another step forward.
"You let some bitch walk into your life... and suddenly you're judging me?"
Michael's expression changed instantly. Every trace of patience disappeared. His voice became ice cold.
"...Don't."
John laughed.
"Don't what?"
Michael stepped so close their shoulders nearly touched.
"...Call her that."
John held his gaze.
"...Why not?"
He shrugged.
"She's been poisoning you against me ever since Maria's party."
Michael couldn't believe what he was hearing. "No."
He shook his head slowly.
"Amanda didn't ruin our friendship."
His voice hardened.
"...You did."
Silence. One heartbeat. Two. John shoved him. Hard. Michael stumbled backward into a row of lockers. The metallic bang echoed through the hallway.
Nearby conversations stopped instantly. Students turned to look. John's chest rose and fell rapidly.
"...You're supposed to be my best friend."
Michael shoved him right back. The force sent John stumbling several steps.
"And best friends..."
Michael's voice echoed through the suddenly silent hallway.
"...tell each other when they're wrong."
John didn't think. He swung. His fist connected squarely with Michael's jaw. The crack echoed through the corridor. Michael stumbled. For one stunned second... Everything froze.
Then... He tackled John. The two boys crashed onto the hallway floor. Books scattered. Backpacks flew. Students immediately jumped backward.
"Fight!" Someone shouted. The entire hallway erupted. John landed another punch. Michael answered with one of his own. Neither noticed the crowd gathering around them. Neither heard the excited shouting. Neither cared.
Years of friendship... Years of loyalty... Years of trust... Collapsed into a flurry of fists and anger. A teacher came sprinting around the corner.
"Break it up!"
Neither boy even looked at him. Another punch. Another shove. Another crash against the lockers. Two more teachers rushed in.
Together, they grabbed hold of Michael and John, pulling them apart before either could throw another swing.
Both boys struggled against their grip. Breathing heavily.
Faces already bruising. The hallway fell eerily quiet.
The principal stepped through the crowd.
His expression alone silenced every whisper.
"My office."
John immediately pointed toward Michael.
"He started it!"
Michael laughed bitterly despite the blood at the corner of his mouth.
"You hit me first!"
The principal's voice thundered through the hallway.
"Both of you."
Neither spoke.
"...Now."
Without another word... Michael and John looked at one another. Not with anger anymore. Not even disappointment. Just... Recognition. The friendship they'd spent years building...Had ended in a single hallway.
As teachers escorted them toward the principal's office... Neither looked back. The principal's office was unusually quiet. The excitement of the crowded hallway felt miles away. Only the steady ticking of the clock on the wall filled the room.
Michael sat in the chair nearest the window. His split lip had already begun to swell. A bruise darkened the side of his jaw.
Across the room... John looked no better.
His knuckles were scraped raw. One sleeve of his varsity jacket had been torn during the fight.
Neither boy looked at the other. The principal stood behind his desk, hands resting firmly on the polished wood.
He let the silence linger. Long enough for both teenagers to understand how serious the situation had become. Finally... He spoke.
"I've been principal at Westbrook for twelve years."
His voice was calm. Measured.
"In that time..."
He looked from Michael to John.
"...I've broken up plenty of fights."
Neither boy responded.
"But this one..."
He sighed heavily.
"...disappointed me."
Michael lowered his eyes. John remained silent.
"I know both of you." The principal folded his arms.
"You're good students."
He looked toward Michael.
"You're captain of the football team."
Then toward John.
"And you're one of the most respected students in this building."
He shook his head.
"So tell me..."
His voice hardened.
"What happened?"
Neither answered. Not because they didn't have something to say. Because there was no explanation that would make any of this better. The principal waited another moment before nodding to himself.
"Very well."
He picked up two disciplinary forms from his desk.
"Michael Johnson."
Michael looked up.
"You are suspended for three school days."
Michael's stomach dropped. The principal turned toward John.
"John Prescott."
John straightened in his chair.
"You are also suspended for three school days." John blinked.
"...Three?"
The principal didn't flinch.
"Three."
John leaned forward.
"But—"
The principal raised a hand.
"I'm not finished."
The room became silent again.
"Because the fight occurred during a school-sponsored prom week..." He looked directly at both boys.
"...neither of you will be permitted to attend tomorrow night's prom."
For a heartbeat... Neither of them reacted. Then—
"...What?"
Michael's voice cracked with disbelief. John sat bolt upright.
"You're serious?"
The principal nodded once.
"Completely."
Michael ran a hand through his hair.
"But Amanda—" He stopped himself. Across the room, John looked equally stunned.
"Melissa's been looking forward to prom for months."
The principal's expression softened only slightly.
"I know."
He genuinely sounded sympathetic.
"I also know that the two of you chose to turn my hallway into a boxing ring."
Neither boy spoke.
"Actions..."
He slid the suspension forms across his desk.
"...have consequences."
The words settled heavily over the room. John slowly turned toward Michael. His frustration returned almost instantly.
"This is your fault."
Michael looked back at him.
"My fault?"
"You couldn't keep your mouth shut."
Michael laughed bitterly.
"You threw the first punch."
"You pushed me."
"You shoved me first." "You accused me—"
"Enough."
The principal's voice cut through the argument like a knife. Both boys immediately fell silent. He looked at each of them with unmistakable disappointment.
"One more word..."
His tone left no room for negotiation.
"...and I'll extend both suspensions to five days."
Silence. John clenched his jaw but looked away. Michael stared down at the paperwork in his hands. Neither of them had imagined this morning ending here. The principal walked around his desk and stopped in front of them.
"I'll be calling both of your parents."
Neither protested. "I suggest..."
He opened the office door.
"...you spend the next three days thinking about whether losing your friendship was worth it."
Michael stood first. John followed a moment later. As they passed one another in the doorway... Neither spoke. Neither apologized. Neither even looked at the other. Two boys who had once sworn they'd always have each other's backs... Walked out of the office as strangers.
Outside, the hallway had already returned to normal.
Students laughed. Teachers taught. The world kept moving.
Completely unaware that four lives had changed forever in less than twenty-four hours.
By lunchtime... Everyone at Westbrook High knew.
News of the fight had traveled through the school faster than any rumor before it.
By the time Amanda reached the principal's office, students were already whispering in the hallway.
"Did you hear?"
"Michael and John actually fought."
"I heard somebody got suspended."
"They're saying they can't go to prom."
Amanda barely heard any of it. She stood quietly outside the office door, wringing her hands together. Every few seconds she glanced toward the frosted glass window, trying to catch a glimpse inside.
The waiting felt endless. Finally... The office door opened. Michael stepped into the hallway. Amanda's heart immediately sank. His lip had begun turning a deep shade of purple. A bruise stretched across his jaw, and there was dried blood near the corner of his mouth.
"Oh my God..."
Without thinking, she hurried toward him. Her fingertips hovered carefully near his face.
"...Michael."
She gently brushed a strand of hair away from his forehead.
"Are you okay?"
Michael offered the smallest smile.
"I'll live."
Amanda searched his face.
"...I'm so sorry."
He shook his head. "You don't have anything to apologize for."
Before Amanda could answer... The office door opened again. John stepped into the hallway. His knuckles were scraped raw, and a dark bruise had already formed beneath one eye. Almost immediately... Melissa came running.
"John!"
She reached him in seconds. Her eyes widened as she looked over his injuries.
"What happened?"
John looked directly past her. His eyes landed on Amanda.
"...Ask them."
Melissa slowly turned around. Her gaze settled on Amanda. Confusion quickly gave way to anger.
"...What did you do?"
Amanda stared back at her.
"I didn't do anything."
John laughed bitterly.
"No?"
His voice dripped with resentment.
"She filled Michael's head with lies."
Michael stepped forward immediately.
"Don't start." John ignored him. Melissa looked between the two boys. Then back at Amanda. Realization washed across her face.
"...You ruined prom."
Amanda blinked in disbelief.
"What?"
"Melissa..."
She shook her head frantically.
"They chose to fight."
Melissa's voice rose.
"Because of you!"
Students nearby had stopped pretending not to watch. Within moments... Maria, Loren, and several cheerleaders hurried toward the growing crowd. Maria looked between everyone.
"What happened?"
Melissa didn't hesitate. She pointed toward Amanda.
