CHAPTER FOUR #6

"Amanda got John banned from prom."

Amanda's heart dropped.

"No."

She shook her head desperately.

"That isn't what happened."

Loren folded her arms.

"It sure sounds like it." Amanda looked around helplessly.

"I didn't tell them to fight."

"No," Loren replied.

"You just gave them something to fight about."

Amanda opened her mouth. Nothing came out. Maria stepped calmly beside Melissa. She looked Amanda up and down.

"So..."

Her voice remained cool.

"This was your big plan?"

Amanda frowned.

"What?"

"You really can't stand seeing Melissa happy."

Amanda stared at her.

"That's not true."

"It sure looks that way."

Amanda felt her frustration rising.

"I was trying to keep her safe."

Maria actually laughed.

"Safe?"

She gestured toward John. "From a boy who paid off her family's debt?"

She tilted her head.

"How terrifying."

Several students chuckled awkwardly. Amanda ignored them.

"You don't know what he said."

Maria shrugged.

"And apparently..."

She smiled.

"...neither do you."

Melissa stepped closer. Close enough that only a few inches separated them.

"I told you..."

Her voice shook with anger.

"...to stay out of my life."

Amanda's eyes immediately filled.

"I'm sorry about prom."

She truly meant it.

"I never wanted this to happen."

Melissa looked away.

"But..."

Amanda swallowed hard. "...I'm not sorry I warned you."

Melissa looked back at her.

Fury flashed across her face.

"You always have to be right."

Amanda shook her head.

"This isn't about being right."

"Then what is it?"

Amanda's voice broke.

"It's about you."

Melissa laughed bitterly.

"No."

She pointed toward the hallway behind Amanda.

"It's about you refusing to let me move on."

Amanda stared at her.

"I never wanted to lose you."

Melissa looked away before quietly saying,

"Then leave me alone."

The words settled over the hallway like ice. Amanda couldn't breathe. Around them... Maria and Loren instinctively stepped closer.

Not touching Amanda. Just... Closing the distance. Making it clear she stood alone. Michael noticed immediately. He stepped forward until he stood beside Amanda. His shoulders squared.

"Back off."

Maria looked at him with a raised eyebrow.

"...Or what?"

The hallway grew tense. Students instinctively backed away. Another fight felt only seconds away. Then—

"Enough!"

The principal's voice thundered through the corridor. Everyone froze. He walked between the two groups, his expression harder than Amanda had ever seen it.

"I have already suspended two students today."

His eyes swept across Maria, Loren, Melissa, and the rest of the cheerleaders.

"If any one of you..."

He pointed toward Amanda.

"...touches her..."

"...threatens her..."

"...or starts another scene..."

His voice left no room for argument.

"You will join them."

Silence. Maria folded her arms.

"We weren't going to touch her."

The principal held her gaze. "Good."

He nodded once.

"Then walking away should be easy."

No one moved. For several long seconds...

The hallway remained completely silent. Finally...

Melissa looked at Amanda one last time. There was hurt in her eyes.

Anger. Disappointment. And somewhere beneath all of it...

Heartbreak. Without another word... She turned.

And walked away. Maria followed. Then Loren. One by one...

The rest of the cheerleaders disappeared down the hallway.

Amanda watched until the last of them rounded the corner.

Only then... Did the tears come. Her knees felt weak.

She covered her face with trembling hands as quiet sobs escaped into the now-empty hallway.

Michael immediately wrapped his arms around her.

She didn't try to hold it together anymore.

Everything she'd been carrying... The party.

Melissa. The warnings. The fight. Prom. Finally became too much.

She cried against his shoulder while the hallway around them slowly returned to life.

Students resumed walking. Teachers called classes back to order.

The world kept moving. But for Amanda...

It felt as though everything she had once called home had slipped through her fingers.

The courtyard felt strangely peaceful compared to the chaos inside the school. Classes had resumed.

The hallways had grown quiet again. Only the soft rustling of leaves and the distant sounds of students eating lunch drifted across campus.

Amanda sat silently on a wooden bench beneath one of the old oak trees.

She hadn't spoken since leaving the hallway.

Beside her, Michael rested an ice pack carefully against his bruised lip.

Every few seconds he winced. Amanda noticed.

"...Does it hurt?"

He smiled weakly.

"A little." She looked down at her hands again. Silence settled comfortably between them. Eventually... Michael sighed.

"I'm sorry."

Amanda looked over.

"...For what?"

He let out a quiet laugh.

"I ruined prom."

Amanda frowned.

"Michael..."

"You were excited."

"I was."

His voice carried genuine guilt.

"You found your dress."

"You kept talking about dancing."

"I know."

Amanda smiled sadly.

"I was excited."

She reached over and gently adjusted the ice pack against his lip.

"But honestly..."

She shrugged.

"I don't care about prom anymore." Michael looked surprised.

"You don't?"

Amanda slowly shook her head.

"I care a lot more about Melissa being safe."

The words hung in the air. Michael lowered the ice pack into his lap. Amanda's eyes filled with guilt once again.

"...I'm sorry."

He frowned.

"For what?"

"You lost John..."

She swallowed.

"...because of me."

Michael immediately shook his head.

"No."

"You were best friends."

"We were."

Amanda looked away.

"I hate that I caused this."

"You didn't."

His answer came without hesitation. Amanda looked back at him. "He made his own choices."

Michael stared toward the school building in the distance.

"I keep thinking about everything he's said over the past few weeks."

He sighed.

"The things I laughed off."

"The things I ignored."

His jaw tightened.

"Maybe..."

He looked down at the melting ice pack.

"...maybe he always had this side to him."

Amanda remained quiet.

"Maybe..."

He laughed bitterly.

"...I just never wanted to see it."

Amanda reached over and quietly slipped her hand into his. Their fingers intertwined.

"I never wanted any of this."

Michael looked at her.

"I know."

Her voice cracked.

"I just..." She blinked back fresh tears.

"...wanted my best friend back."

Michael's heart broke. Without saying a word... He gently pulled Amanda closer until she rested against his shoulder. She didn't resist. She simply melted into his embrace.

For a while... Neither of them spoke. The afternoon breeze stirred the leaves above them. Students laughed somewhere across the courtyard. Life continued. Even when theirs suddenly felt as though it had stopped. Amanda's voice was barely audible.

"...What if it wasn't enough?"

Michael looked down at her.

"What if warning her..."

She closed her eyes.

"...wasn't enough?"

He gently brushed a loose strand of red hair behind her ear.

"If it wasn't..."

He smiled sadly.

"...then it was never your fault."

Amanda looked up at him. Confusion filled her tearful eyes. Michael's expression softened.

"You can't save someone..." He paused.

"...who doesn't believe they're in danger."

Amanda stared at him. The words settled somewhere deep inside her heart.

Slowly... Another tear escaped. Michael leaned forward.

He kissed her gently. Not to fix anything.

Not to erase the pain. Simply to remind her...

She wasn't alone. When they pulled apart...

He wrapped both arms around her. Holding her a little tighter than before.

As though he could somehow protect her from everything waiting outside that moment.

Across campus…

The gymnasium had emptied considerably. Only a handful of students remained, finishing the last of the prom decorations before heading home.

Melissa sat alone on the bottom bleacher.

Her prom dress rested inside its garment bag beside her.

She stared blankly at the polished hardwood floor.

Maria stood nearby with Loren and Theresa.

Concern flickered across all three of their faces. Maria finally broke the silence.

"We can still go."

Melissa looked up.

"What?"

"Prom."

Maria shrugged.

"We don't need the boys."

Loren nodded enthusiastically.

"We'll make our own night."

Melissa forced a smile.

"I don't want to go without John."

The words came out much quieter than she'd intended. Loren's smile faded.

"There'll be other dances." Melissa looked down at the dress bag beside her.

"This one mattered."

A tear slipped quietly down her cheek. She wiped it away before anyone could pretend not to notice.

"...Can I..."

Her voice trembled.

"...Can I please be alone for a little while?"

Maria looked as though she wanted to argue. Theresa gently touched her arm.

"Come on."

Maria sighed dramatically.

"Fine."

One by one... The three girls walked toward the locker rooms. Theresa looked back once. Only once. Then quietly disappeared through the doors. The gym became silent. Melissa lowered her head into her hands. The tears came almost immediately. She cried for the prom she'd lost. For Amanda. For John.

For everything that seemed to keep falling apart around her. The sound of a door opening echoed through the empty gym. Melissa quickly wiped at her face. She looked up. John stood near the entrance, backpack slung over one shoulder. His bruised face immediately found hers.

"...Hey."

Melissa's heart softened. "Hey."

He crossed the gym without another word before sitting beside her on the bleachers. For a few moments... Neither of them spoke. Finally... John looked down at his scraped knuckles.

"...I'm sorry."

Melissa studied his bruised face.

"For fighting?"

He shook his head.

"For all of it."

She reached out carefully, brushing her fingertips along the bruise beneath his eye.

"You look terrible."

He laughed quietly.

"I've looked better.”

She smiled through lingering tears.

"I should've handled everything differently."

John looked at the floor.

"I let my temper get the best of me."

Melissa searched his face.

"...Are you angry with me?"
