CHAPTER FOUR #7

He looked genuinely surprised.

"Never."

The answer came so quickly it made her smile. She nodded slowly. "I'm not angry with you either."

John tilted his head.

"No?"

Melissa shook her head.

"I'm angry that they won't leave us alone."

John was quiet. After a moment, he spoke carefully.

"Michael told you..."

"...what I said."

Melissa nodded.

"He did."

John looked away.

"Do you believe him?"

Melissa turned toward him completely.

"I believe..."

She reached for his hand.

"...that Michael misunderstood you."

John searched her expression.

"And Amanda?"

Melissa sighed heavily.

"I think..." She hesitated.

"...she still wants me to need her."

Her voice softened.

"She can't accept that I found someone else."

John lifted his free hand and gently brushed his thumb across her cheek.

"Do you believe me?"

Melissa didn't hesitate. She intertwined their fingers.

"There is nothing..."

She smiled gently.

"...they could ever say that would make me leave you."

For just a moment... Something unreadable flickered across John's face. Then it disappeared behind a warm smile. He leaned forward.

Kissing her slowly. Tenderly. When they finally pulled apart... He rested his forehead against hers.

"I promise..."

His voice was almost a whisper.

"...I'll make all of this up to you."

Melissa smiled.

"How?"

John laughed softly.

"I haven't figured that part out yet." She giggled.

"I'll hold you to it."

He stood first before offering her his hand.

"Come on."

Melissa looked up at him.

"Where are we going?"

John smiled.

"...Home."

She slipped her hand into his without hesitation.

Together... They walked out of the gym. Neither of them noticed the forgotten prom decorations still scattered across the floor.

Or the empty dance that, only days earlier, had seemed like the most important night of their lives.

Now... They had something much bigger to lose.

The evening sky had begun to melt into shades of orange and lavender by the time John's pickup truck pulled onto Melissa's street.

The neighborhood was quiet. Porch lights flickered on one by one as families settled in for the evening.

John eased the truck to the curb in front of Melissa's house before shifting it into park.

The engine fell silent. For a moment... Neither of them moved. Melissa rested comfortably against the passenger seat, absentmindedly tracing circles across the sleeve of her dress bag. Neither one seemed ready for the night to end. John finally broke the silence.

"I would've said..."

He smiled to himself.

"...I'll pick you up for prom tonight."

Melissa looked over. "But..."

He laughed quietly.

"...apparently I'm considered a public menace now."

Melissa couldn't help laughing. The sound was soft. Gentle. The first truly carefree laugh she'd managed all day.

"I don't care."

John raised an eyebrow.

"No?"

She shook her head.

"As long as you still come over..."

A small smile tugged at her lips.

"...that's enough for me."

John turned toward her.

"You wanted me to come over for prom night?"

Melissa nodded.

"I bought a dress."

Her smile became almost shy.

"Someone should get to see me in it."

John felt his heart swell.

"I'd like that." Melissa looked at him for a long moment. Then slowly leaned across the center console. She kissed him. Slowly. Tenderly. Neither hurried the moment.

When they finally pulled apart... Melissa didn't move away. Her forehead rested lightly against his.

"I don't think..."

She smiled softly.

"...you have to wait until later."

John looked at her curiously.

"Oh?"

Melissa laughed under her breath.

"Come inside."

For just a second... John searched her face. Not because he doubted her. Because he wanted to be sure.

"...Are you certain?"

Melissa nodded.

"I don't want to be alone tonight."

The words were quiet. Honest. There was no fear in them. Only exhaustion. John gently reached up, brushing a loose strand of red hair behind her ear. His fingers lingered against her cheek for only a moment.

"Then..."

He smiled warmly.

"...you won't be." Together, they climbed out of the truck. The evening air carried the scent of freshly cut grass and blooming flowers from a nearby garden. John walked around the front of the truck to meet Melissa on the sidewalk.

Without saying a word... He reached for her hand. Melissa smiled as their fingers intertwined. They began walking toward the front porch together. Halfway up the walkway... Melissa glanced down. The silver promise ring caught the glow of the porch light.

She smiled to herself. Then looked up at John. He smiled back without needing to ask why. For just a moment... Everything felt peaceful. No arguments. No rumors. No suspensions. No broken friendships.

Just two teenagers walking hand in hand toward a future they believed they understood. Melissa unlocked the front door. She looked back at John one last time before stepping inside. He followed. The door quietly closed behind them.

Outside... The porch light continued to glow against the growing darkness. Unaware... That before long... Everything waiting behind that door...

Would change forever.
