Chapter Fourteen

Rork

We knocked one more time but found on the last one, we had an audience. Great.

“Hey, Craven.” Holt, Vaughn, and Poe came barreling down Main Street with their omega, Karissa, in tow.

Craven turned to see our friends coming toward us, but they looked more concerned than anything. Holt was in his uniform and reached up to wipe his brow.

Shit, had we broken some law? Why in the world was the sheriff coming over?

“What’s up, Holt?” Craven said. When the sheriff and his pack and mate arrived, we all shook hands, but Karissa’s concerned brow stayed firmly in place.

“We heard there was some kind of break-in or invasion. Are you three the cause of that?”

“We came to speak to Tawny,” I said, keeping my voice calm. And what the hell did he mean by invasion? We hardly had tanks or an army.

Poe chuckled. “There’s clearly been some kind of misunderstanding because we got a call saying there were strangers scaring the new omega in town.”

“Scaring?” The blood drained from my face. “We never meant to scare her. We came to talk to her, and we heard crying from inside. We thought she was hurt or something happened, so we knocked more.”

“Probably would scare any omega who was alone in a new place.” Vaughn peeked through the windows.

Karissa stood on the outskirts of our conversation with a soft smile on her face. She pulled her long, red hair up into a bun. “Boys, boys. Make some room.” She walked up to the window and knocked on it. “Tawny, I’m Karissa. Janis sent me over. Let me in the front door, please. I’m here to help.”

“Help?” I scoffed. “We’re not here to harm.”

Karissa squinted and turned a stink eye on me. “But she doesn’t know that, does she?”

Fuck. We’d come here in a big hurry, trying to barge into Tawny’s life like a bunch of brutes. Flint and Craven hadn’t even met her yet and we’d screwed up.

“I’m sorry,” I whispered as Tawny cracked the door open.

“Karissa?” she called out in a mousey tone. Not even close to the bold, confident woman I’d met before. We did that. Put fear into her.

Karissa shouldered her way past her mates and into the door. She spoke to the female for a second then turned to us. “How about you boys give us some room to talk? Everyone needs a breather.”

When the door closed, we all did just that, breathed out a sigh of relief.

“Gods, I love that woman,” Poe said, watching the door like Karissa might come back through.

“Taking charge like that? We have one hell of an omega.” Holt, Vaughn, and Poe carried on, gushing over their female.

Flint leaned his head against the bookstore, ignoring Karissa’s suggestion. “Did we just screw up any chance with her?” he asked no one in particular.

“Not if she’s really yours. We’ve messed up a time or two with our omega, and somehow she always forgives us. You really think Tawny is yours?”

We meandered away from the scene of the crime and talked. The townspeople scattered. Nothing to see. No drama to unfold. I nodded at Holt’s question. “We do. Or I do. Craven and Flint haven’t even met her face-to-face yet.”

“Don’t worry. If she’s yours, everything will work out.”

I didn’t know if I believed him or not.
