Chapter 8
After my little encounter with Sean, I left school.
Unfortunately, I had nowhere to go.
If I went home now Brandon would kill me for not being in school right now.
So I kinda just started to walk around and somehow I ended up at a deserted park.
I sat on a swing at the empty playground so I could get some thinking done.
I needed to figure out what it is that Sean wants.
I just don't get it. Why does he keep trying to talk to me? He couldn't possibly like me.
Even if he did, it couldn't work out with my brother around. There's no chance that I could ever be happy, especially with Sean.
The truth is that I'm afraid his intentions aren't good. Hardly anyone talks to me and if they do, they never say anything kind.
I've been trying to push him away because I was worried his intentions weren't good.
No one ever wanted to just talk and be my friend so it was possible he was just going to hurt me after gaining my trust. That's why I couldn't give it to him.
I felt terrible about being rude to Sean, but I would do it to protect myself.
He may not actually want to hurt me, but I could tell that he was surly hiding something.
I went to the pack house right after Carly left. There was no point in me being at this school without her here. She's the reason I was here in the first place.
I also needed some time away to think over thimgs. I was exhausted with all this mate stuff. Why does she have to be so stubborn? Why does she have to be so closed off and won't just open up to me a little?
Not to mention, I still have to find out why she flinched when I touched her. I really hope that it could be that she felt the same sparks I did when we touched.
I stepped out of my car and went into the pack house going straight up to Derek's office.
He said to come in when I knocked on the door so I went in there to find him at his desk with his little 4 year old daughter.
"Hey, Sean. How can I help you?" He asked.
"Was it easy when you found your mate?" I asked him sitting down.
"Of course it wasn't easy. When I first met Mia she had never really wanted an alpha for a mate, but she still fell in love with me eventually and now we're happier than ever with a gorgeous little girl." He kissed his daughter's cheek which made her giggle.
"Do you think Carly and I will ever be able to have a future like that?" I asked.
"Yes. All you need to do is give it some time." He assured me.
"Ok."
"Do you mind taking Penelope to the park? I have a lot of work to do yet and she really wanted to go play." He explained.
"I would love to." I told him.
"Do you wanna go to the park with Sean?" He asked Penelope.
She nodded yes. Her dad gave her a kiss on the cheek before she jumped off his lap and grabbed my hand.
"Thank you." I said to Alpha Derek as his daughter led me out the door.
"No problem. Good luck with your mate."
Penelope and I walked out of the pack house together.
"Do you want to walk there or ride in the car?" I asked her.
"Carry me." She answered.
I guess that meant we weren't taking the car. I couldn't say no to her so I lifted her and sat her up on my shoulders.
I could only vaguely remember seeing a park around here somewhere so I had to guess which way to go.
The entire walk little Penelope was yapping on and on about all her friends and everything she did today. I didn't mind it though, it was nice that she filled the silence and it made me want a kid of my own.
Of course that wouldn't be happening anytime soon. Carly didn't even like me yet. Even if I could start to get her to open up to the idea of us together soon, we were still young for having a baby.
We finally made it to the park and I saw that there were only a few kids there.
They were all sliding down the slides and playing tag.
"I know them!" Penelope squeals.
So I let her down and she ran up to her friends.
I was about to sit down on a park bench when I spotted her.
She was sitting all alone on a swing.
I wasn't going to pass up any opportunities to be with my mate, so I went over there by her.
"Hey, Carly." I said sitting down on the swing next to her.
She looked over and scowled at me.
"What are you doing here? Are you stalking me?" She asked.
"Of course not. I was just taking my niece to the park so she could play." I pointed to where Penelope was at the top of the slide. "I had no idea that you would be here. Why are you here?"
"I didn't want my family to know I skipped school, so I'm just wasting time before I go home." She said.
I believe that most of what she said was true, but I could tell she was holding back something else.
My instincts told me to call her out on it but I decided to let her keep her secrets for now. It was enough that she was just talking to me.
After several minutes passed, I persuaded Carly to get off the swing and we played with the kids.
It was really fun. Carly and Penelope seemed to really like each other. Maybe I should start bringing Penelope everywhere I go because Carly doesn't seem to hate me whenever she's around.
When Carly said she had to get home and get ready for work I decided it was time for me to take Penelope back too.
This time Penelope didn't make me carry her she simply walked beside me and held my hand.
"Sean, why did Carly have a purple spot on her arm? Did somebody draw on her?" Penelope asked.
Purple spot? It must've been a bruise. How did I miss that?
"I'm sure that's what happened." I told her.
I did my best to keep my tone calm and even for Penelope's sake. It was difficult when I was nearly overcome with fury. Whoever hurt my mate is going pay.
