~Devina's POV~
I've felt my heart break before, like when my dad left us. Or me I guess. Before all this, he gifted me Mr. Freddles. Another wave of tears fell down my face at the horrid memory of his cold lifeless body on the cement. I heard a soft knock on my bedroom door and I groaned.
"Go away, Zane!" I sobbed, then heard the door open and close.
"Baby I'm so sorry." I felt the bed dip down but I kept my head buried under the soft comforter. "I'll get you a new-" I yanked the covers away from my face and sat up so quickly I thought for sure I would get whiplash.
"You can't just buy me a new one Zane!" I screamed. "You know my dad gave him to me the night before he left. You can't just replace him, Zane." He leaned forwards and wiped a few of my tears with his thumb.
"I know. I just don't want you to be in pain anymore." It was kind of ironic he said that because ever since I've met him, I've felt nothing but pain. Physically and mentally. "Will you come out and eat something, please? It's been a day."
"I'm good." And with that, I curled up into a little ball on my side so that my knees were touching the wall and tried to hold back my tears.
"You didn't eat the sandwich I left you earlier." He continued but I just shrugged. "Don't like peanut butter and jelly?" He tried again but it was no use.
"I wasn't hungry." I lied
"Sunshine, please eat something. If not for you, then for me?" I shook my head.
"I'm not hungry."
"Then drink some water." I felt him reach for my water glass on my side table but I just shook my head again.
"Not thirsty." He took a deep breath and scooted closer to me. "What are you doing?" I asked, now annoyed.
"Trying to comfort you." He said in a duh tone and curled up next to me. He pulled me into his chest and slung his around my waist. "Is it working?" I hesitated then nodded. His touch made everything better. I snuggled into the warm covers and drifted off to sleep.
When I woke up, I smelled pancakes and my favorite syrup. I chuckled softly, almost a hundred percent sure this was a dream and rolled over on to my back. Slowly opening my eyes, I could still smell the pancakes. I quickly sat up and rushed downstairs. In the kitchen, Zane was making pancakes.
"What's this?" I slowly asked and he swiftly turned around.
"You're up." He grinned and walked over to one of the many cupboards in the spacious kitchen.
Pulling out two plates he filled one with four pancakes and handed it to me.
I eagerly took the plate and gave him a soft smile.
"You like pancakes?" He asked as he got himself a plate and led us to the dining room that was now furnished.
"No. I love them." I reached across the table for the syrup. "Pecan?" I asked and he nodded.
"It's my favorite I hope you don't mind." I looked up into his eyes and smiled.
"It's my favorite too." He grinned and stuffed a bite of pancake into his mouth. I did the same thing and moaned. Zane slowly looked up and furrowed his brows. "These are really good." He smirked and went back to eating.
"I make the best."
Once we both finished I went to go back up to my room.
"Wait, Devina." I turned back around and glanced at Zane. "I was thinking, maybe we could do something today?" He hopefully asked.
"I don't know..." I trailed off and he chuckled.
"I won't make you do anything you don't want to. I won't hurt you." I nodded my head and turned back around to go up to my room.
"I'll go get ready."
When I got to my room, I lay out some blue skinny jeans and a light gray crop top.
It looked warm outside today. I made my way to the connected bathroom and started on my makeup.
Today, I only wore some concealer and mascara on both top and bottom lashes.
Once I was done, it didn't look like I had been crying for two whole days.
I walked out of the bathroom and met Zane downstairs.
"Hey-" He looked at me and his eyes widened. "Um, you should change." He finally said and I narrowed my eyes.
"You should change." I crossed my arms over my chest and huffed.
"Whatever. Let's just go." I followed him outside and gasped when I saw what was sitting in the driveway.
"Is this a-" I couldn't even finish my sentence I slowly approached the vehicle and reached out to touch it.
"Bugatti Chiron? Yes, it is." I ran my fingers over the matte black and brushed gold exterior.
"This car cost over two million dollars." I started. "And they only make a certain amount of models. You're that rich?" He smirked and shrugged.
"Like I said. Money isn't an issue." That makes one of us, I thought. "No. It's not a problem for you too." He growled out.
Whoops.
"I said that out loud." I laughed and shook my head at myself. "Can we drive it?" As if he was waiting for me ask this questions he started walking towards me and smirked.
"We aren't just going to drive it, Sunshine. We're going to race it." My mouth flew open and I grinned. "And I always win." Then he took my hand and escorted me to the passenger side while he got in on the driver's side. Once we were on the road, my heart was beating so fast.
"I'm still mad at you though!" I yelled over the rushing sounds of the wind whipping throughout the car and over the roar of the engine.
"Just be honest with yourself Sunshine. You like all this." I couldn't disagree with him, I liked the cars. "And this." He motioned to his body and my face practically lit on fire.
"As if." I scoffed.
"At least admit you like my cars." He tried and I giggled.
"I really like your cars," I said honestly and he grinned.
"They make you happy." He said more to himself than to me. "Things are going to get better, okay? I promise I will do everything I can to make things better for you." He was now following the speed limit. Sort of.
"It's already better."
~Zane's POV~
Once I saw her outfit, I wanted to rip them off of her and put a nun outfit on her.
Not in that way. Well, maybe a little in that way.
She looked so damn beautiful and happy sitting in my Bugatti.
I was excited to race this baby but not excited for everyone's attention to be on her.
She'll already attract attention with her clothes and looks but getting out of a Bugatti?
Everyone's going to be cat calling her. I tried to calm myself down for her.
"Hey, you okay?" She asked and put her hand on my shoulder which made me freeze. She's touching me. Over time, I've noticed that she's not one for touching.
"Peachy," I replied and she giggled, taking her hand away.
I missed it already so I took my right hand off of the steering wheel and placed it on her thigh.
"We're almost there. Stay by me the whole time okay?
The guys here, they aren't the best." She frowned and I rubbed circles on her leg to calm her down.
But judging by the quick pace of her heart, it only made it worse. I smirked.
"What about when you're racing?" She pouted and I laughed.
"You'll be sitting right there with me." She smiled as we pulled into the vacant parking lot. "Ready?" She nodded and I drove up into the circle of cars. I was the first to get out but Devina wasn't too far behind.
"Damn!" I heard a few guys yell out, either towards the car or towards Devina. Maybe both. I went around to the passenger side and grabbed Devina's hand. I pulled her away from everyone's stares and started to look for Levi.
"Yo! Zane!" I heard him call and turned around. He was jogging up to us with an approving smirk, again was it towards Devina or the car? "Hey, buddy!" We did the bro hug and he moved his eyes to Devina. "And who might you be?" He sent her one of his dazzling smiles and I stepped in front of her.
"She's mine." He immediately nodded and backed away. Loyalty feels good.
"No." Devina slid past me and stuck out her hand to Levi. "I'm Devina." She smiled and they shook hands.
"Levi." She nodded and turned back towards me. "I'm guessing you want to race?" Levi smirked and I nodded, pulling Devina into my side. She didn't protest, just snuggled in closer to me. I looked down at her and smiled.
"Hell yeah," I replied and looked back up to Levi.
"Okay, I'll get you set up. Just hang around."
"Alright, thanks, man. Do you know if the boys are here?" I asked and he smirked.
"They're trying to get someone to f-" I sent him a glare and he started cracking up.
"What? They're trying to get someone to what?" Devina innocently asked and Levi just started laughing harder, falling to the ground.
"Nothing Sunshine." I rubbed her arm and little then let go of her. "Where are they?" I pulled Levi off of the ground and helped him stand on his feet again.
"Down by the start. Jonah is gonna race." He held his hand over his chest and looked back at Devina. "Got yourself a good girl huh?" I rolled my eyes and Devina giggled. "I wish you the best of luck with this one." He pointed to me and Devina laughed again. God, I love her laugh.
"Don't listen to him." I grabbed her hand again and led her to the start line where Jonah was sitting in his Ferrari. "Hey man." I greeted as soon as I got up to his rolled down the window.
"Zane! Bro, where have you been?" Jonah leaned out of his window a little and we shook hands.
"Eh around." He glanced at Devina and I almost punched him when he looked her up and down. He always does this right before he tries to get a girl to sleep with him.
"I'm Jonah." He smirked and grabbed her hand, which wasn't connected to mine anymore. The whole movement was awkward because he had to basically lean out of his open window.
"Devina." She politely smiled and he finally let go of her hand.
"We should probably go-" I tried to pull her away from Jonah but he stopped us.
"So I'm going to race, and win," he winked and she blushed. She freaking blushed. "Wanna ride with me?" He smirked and I could tell there were double meanings to that sentence. Devina looked over at his car and furrowed her brows. Is she really thinking about this?
"I'm good." She replied and both me and Jonah's jaws dropped.
"W-what?" He stuttered, not used to getting shot down.
"No offense or anything, but I'm just not really a Ferrari kind of girl." She sweetly said.
"I can, um get a different car?" He was confused, I stepped back a little and let Devina handle this.
"Nah that's okay, I want to ride with Zane.
" Jonah snapped his eyes towards me and sent me a questioning look.
"I'm his mate." She added and I almost fell to my knees.
If Jonah, didn't know about werewolves, this would be pretty funny.
I couldn't take my eyes off of her, especially when she just accepted me as her mate.
"Man- I didn't know I swear!" I laughed and pulled Devina into my side again. I wrapped my arms around her waist and kissed her forehead.
"I know. It's okay." He was probably still confused as we walked away from him.
"You're in buddy!" Levi patted my back as soon as we reached him.
"Thanks, man." I smiled and walked back to my Bugatti. "Ready Sunshine?" I asked and she furrowed her eyebrows.
"Why do you call me that?" I chuckled and opened the door for her then got into the driver side of the car.
"Because that's what you are. You're my sunshine.
You light up my life, you make everything better.
" Her jaw dropped then she smiled. "I-" I was cut off by someone knocking on my window.
"No," I growled out as soon as I saw who was the culprit.
"What do you want?" I huffed out then rolled the window down.
"We're racing!" Everett laughed and patted my back. "Who's the girl?" He licked his lips and smirked at Devina.
"How many people are going to check her out today!?" I growled and Everett dryly laughed again.
"It's not our fault you brought a girl here." Devina looked down at her hands and I glanced back at Everett. "Well, this just makes things more interesting."
"What?" Devina finally asked and Everett smiled.
"If I win. You have to go out on a date with me." Everett explained and I clenched my fists.
"No way." I protested but Everett wasn't going to give up this easily.
"And if you win, you get her all to yourself." I violently shook my head. "What's the problem? Afraid you'll loose?" He taunted and I chuckled.
"You know what? Fine. Deal." And we shook hands.
"No! You can't just hand me off to some random guy Zane!" Devina tried pulling my hand away but I finished our hand shake and shot her an apologetic smile.
"I'm Everett, by the way." He reached for Devina's hand, over me, and kissed it.
"Devina." She sighed and took her hand back.
When Everett left to get in his car, my eyes followed him. He got in a Bugatti Chiron. The same car as me. Shit.
"I'm sorry," I said and she just looked away.
"Once again, you care about nothing except for yourself. You didn't even ask me. You acted like I was some trophy." I rubbed my hands over my face and started the car.
"I'll win," I assured her but she just shook her head.
"He had the same car as you, you Neanderthal." I chuckled.
"But I'm a better driver." I deadpanned and she shook her head.
"We'll see about that one." And with that, I jerked forward to the start line, next to Everett.
"I'll win this race and your heart Devina!" Everett yelled and Devina just softly laughed.
"Good luck with that one!" She yelled back and I smiled. I had to win this race. My girl was on the line.
