Sixteen
~Devina's POV~
"Devina?" I heard Dylan call.
"One second I'm almost ready!" I finished pulling my grey hoodie over my head and fixed my hair in the mirror.
Today was Monday, three days since I found out Zane was lying to me.
Three days since we last kissed. I closed my eyes as a tear escaped, careful not to mess up my makeup I touched it up a little and made my way downstairs.
Today was also my first day of school, well of this new school.
Dylan informed me that it's almost an all wolf school and the people who aren't wolves, know about them.
To say I'm nervous would be an understatement.
I was terrified. Zane kept his promise, he checked up on me whenever he wanted.
Which in these last three days, was only once, to inform me about how he signed me up for school.
Also to tell me that people will treat me differently because I'm the soon-to-be Luna.
I had dryly laughed in his face and told him I wasn't going to be a Luna anytime soon.
This just made him even more angry with me and he stomped away yelling for me to have fun at school and with all the jerks.
I yelled back that he wasn't going to this school so I didn't have to worry about it.
Obviously, this made him even more mad.
He hasn't talked to me since. I don't blame him. I don't even want to talk to me.
"Ready?" A girl named Gillie asked and I nodded, we met on Saturday while I was walking through the neighborhood.
Just like with Mika, we bonded over Twilight.
Unfortunately, she's team Jacob, but I guess that makes sense because she's a wolf and so is her mate, Henry -who was also here with us.
Gillie insisted that she be my tour guide and I happily obliged.
"Yay! I actually have a friend here now! " She jumped up and down and squealed.
Her mate, Henry pouted. "What about me?" She giggled and peppered kisses all over his face.
"You're my mate, you're more than my friend baby!
" She finally pecked him on the lips and I had to look away.
Not because PDA grossed me out, in fact usually it made me happy to see other happy couples but this time I couldn't help but feel jealous, I didn't have that with Zane.
Not anymore. Did I ever really have that with him though?
Or was it all just temporary? I was snapped out of my thoughts when Mika patted my back.
"Good luck kiddo." His hand moved to my head and ruffled my hair, I swatted his big hand away and whined.
"Really? I spent-" I thought about this and laughed.
"Thirty seconds on that!" He joined in on my laughed and lead us all outside.
For a split second I thought I saw Zane up in his bedroom window looking down but as soon as I turned my head, I couldn't see anything but the faint sway of the curtains.
I sighed and looked back at my new group of friends.
"Let's goooooo!" Gillie whined making both me and Henry laugh.
She was like the mother of the group, she's always making sure everyone is happy.
She's what I'm supposed to be like with the pack if Zane doesn't reject me, that is.
And almost as if he heard his previous name in my thoughts, he walked out of his house, shutting and locking the door behind him.
I couldn't look away from him. Not when he had a backpack slung over his left shoulder and a pillow resting in his strong arms. He stopped walking and locked gazes with me.
I couldn't help myself, I started to walk towards him but Dylan held me back.
"Dev," He warned as I tried to escape his hold.
"Where's he going?" I turned back towards Zane and saw he was glaring at Dylan. He opened his mouth to say something, but then quickly shut it and hopped into his Audi R8. In blue. The one he bought to impress me.
"We're going to be late." Gillie softly said and tugged on my sweatshirt sleeve.
I nodded, watching as he back out of his driveway and turned left.
Out of the pack city. "Okay, to survive here next few months you need to know who to stay away from.
Take notes. Vanessa Fields, Rebecca Gavin's and the jock flock.
You can tell who's in the jock flock just by looking at them, they're arrogant jocks who just want to get in your pants.
So keep your legs shut." She giggled making me blush.
"Alright." Was all I replied. Henry and Gillie walked me to the front office but then scurried off to class. "Hi, I'm Devina Stavros? I need to pick up my schedule." The secretary quickly looked up and jumped.
"Oh, my! Luna! Welcome!" She practically screeched. I shyly looked around, making sure no one else was around. "When Alpha called I was so ecstatic! Our Luna, in this school! Wow." I immediately shook my head and frowned.
"Please don't call me that, it's just Devina. I don't really want word getting around about-you know." She raised her drawn on eyebrows and nodded.
"Of course. I understand." She reached into a filing cabinet and dug around for my schedule. "Gossip." She rolled her eyes and pulled out a small piece of paper. "Here you are. Math first period. Geesh, you have fun with that." I laughed and took the paper from her offering hands.
"Thank you-" I stopped, for her to say her name.
"Mrs. Young." I smiled and looked over my schedule. "If you ever need anything don't hesitate to ask. I'll be here!" I giggled and thanked her.
Walking down to my first-period class, I couldn't help but wonder where Zane was now.
Or who he's with. I closed my eyes and willed myself not to cry, especially because I was almost in my math class.
I sucked in a deep breath and walked into the classroom, heading straight for the teacher's desk up at the front of the class.
"Miss Devina Stavros." The teacher greeted without even looking up.
"Welcome to River High School." He finally set down his crossword puzzle and "worlds best teacher" coffee mug.
"Where would you like to sit?" I glanced around the room and saw that most of the preppy and popular people were in the front.
"A back corner?" He chuckled and looked at all the students.
"Good choice. I don't usually let people pick where to sit so, as you kids say, keep it on the DL." I laughed and nodded. "I'm Mr. Hatch." I shook his hand then went back to my assigned spot way in the back. Once I sat down, someone else took he seat next to me.
"Hey." He grinned and I politely smiled. "I'm Ben." He glanced down past my eyes and towards my chest. After mentally barfing, I rolled my eyes and pulled out my book. Good luck trying to talk to me now, Buddy.
After four periods of math, science, Spanish and English-in that order- it was finally time for lunch.
"Hey," The same guy pulled me back and smirked. "I noticed you were human, want me to show you some cool things we wolves can do?" He wiggles his eyebrows and I snatched my arm back. "We're really good at certain physical activities."
"Too bad I don't do physical activities." I tried to walk past him but he grabbed my arm again. "Look Burt, or whatever your name is, I'm not interested in you." He stepped back again and scoffed.
"You'll regret that Stavros." And with that he walked away, leaving me alone in the deserted hallway. I was more confused by his words. I never said my last name.
"Devina!" I heard Gillie call from down the hall.
"Hey sorry. I got caught up with something." We walked into the crowded cafeteria together and my eyes nearly bulged. Every single table was filled with laughing and shouting teenagers. "Is it always like this?" I tried to whisper, but it was no use. I couldn't even hear myself talk.
"Yup. Let's go, Henry saved us some seats." She lead me to the back and plopped down next to Henry. They exchanged a brief kiss and Henry put his arm around her shoulders and pulled Gillie into his side. Once again, I felt jealous at the intimacy.
"Hey guys, I think I'm just gonna go home early." Gillie frowned and shook her head. "I'm done with all my classes anyways."
"No! How are you going to get back home?" Home.
"I'll call Za- Dylan. He'll come." I gathered all my things up, hugged them goodbye and hurried outside. Pulling my phone out, I groaned. I don't even have Dylan's number. Without hesitation, I texted Zane.
"Hey, where r u?" I texted and hit send. Within seconds my phone chimed and I looked at the message.
"None of ur business." It read. My heart dropped and I turned my phone off. Guess I'm walking. I was glad he said that it would be super awkward if I asked him for a ride. I hugged my sides and started walking towards the house.
"Need a ride?" I heard someone pull up next to me and ask. I turned to look at the boy and smiled.
"No thanks. I'm almost there." He nodded but continued driving slowly next to me. "Thanks though." I tried to send him a hint but he just chuckled.
"I'm not just going to let someone like you walk all alone. I'll just drive slowly next to you until you get to your destination." I raised my eyebrows.
"Someone like me?" He grinned and nodded.
"Yeah, beautiful." My face flushed as he complimented me. More like flirted, but I'll let it slide. "Come on. Just let me give you a ride. I won't try anything." You already are. I thought but chose against saying it out loud.
"Fine." I laughed and got into his black Mustang, not as nice as Zane's cars.
"I'm Ashton." He greeted.
"Devina." He smiled again then looked back to the road.
"Where to?"
"Um, do you know where Z- the Alpha lives?
" Ashton snapped his head over to me and widened his eyes.
"Right across from his house," I added and he relaxed a little.
If only he knew that Zane-their Alpha- is my mate.
I decided to keep that one under the rug.
We talked a little about school, turns out Ashton is a senior at River High.
"This is it. Thanks again for the ride." I thanked him for the nth time and he just smiled.
"Are you going to be leaving school every day at this time?" He asked and I shrugged.
"Maybe, I don't have any classes in the afternoon. I just left before lunch." He nodded.
"Well, I can give you rides? I don't have any classes either." I grinned and smiled.
"That'd be great, thanks."
"Yeah, just look for my baby when your class ends.
" I rolled my eyes as he stroked the steering wheel.
Opening the door, I turned back around and thanked him once again.
"No problem." We bid our fair wells and I hurried inside, afraid that Zane might be home.
I knew better than that though, he was probably with some other girl.
A tear escaped as I thought about him with other people.
Is he thinking the same thing now? I wondered. Probably not.
~Zane's POV~
This morning, before I left when I saw Devina with Dylan, I almost killed him.
He's the reason she hates me now. He's the reason she's not with me.
He's the reason why I'm leaving to distract myself.
I knew even before I texted Ashley, that she'd let me stay with her for a few days.
Although, she said I'd have to do some things for her.
When Devina saw me at first, it looked like she was going to come over and talk to me but of course, Dylan had to be there to hold her back.
Maybe you're the one holding her back.
I told myself. I sped down the highway and groaned.
She's always in my thoughts. She's probably with someone else right now, laughing and doing her cute little giggle.
Just the thought of her with someone else makes me clench the steering wheel.
If it was a living thing, it wouldn't be alive anymore.
I miss her. I miss her blonde hair and crystal blue eyes.
Like water meeting the sandy shores. I missed how she furrows her eyebrows when she's thinking.
I miss how good it feels when her hand is in mine.
I miss it. I miss her. I tried my hardest to push her out of my head as I pulled into Ashley's driveway.
The last thing I needed was to accidentally moan Devina's name.
~Devina's POV~
It's been two weeks since Zane left. I don't know where he is, unlike Dylan who just chooses not to tell me.
You don't want to know. I told myself over and over again but I did.
I wanted to know so badly. As the days go by, the more I thought of Zane.
I felt like I was going crazy. Is this what it's supposed to feel like?
Is it supposed to hurt this much? Like he's constantly here taking a hammer to my heart and destroying it?
Like I'm drowning in my own miserable thoughts of him and our memories together?
As I lay down in my bed, staring blankly staring up at the ceiling I couldn't help but think that he wasn't coming back.
One tear falling was all it took for me to completely break apart.
Like smashing thin glass against the concrete, I broke.
"Devina?" Dylan hurried into my room and put the back of his hand onto my forehead, sending waves of pain through my body.
"You're burning up." I pushed his hand away and sat up.
"What-" He stopped mid-sentence when he came to a realization, of what?
I don't know. "Come on, we gotta get you to Sam. "
