~Devina's POV~
Dylan scooped me up into his arms and jogged outside to his car. He opened the passenger door and carefully placed me in. With every touch from him, it sent ripples of pain through my body.
"J-just stop!" I screamed, making him flinch in surprise.
"Don't touch me!" He nodded and ran to the other side of the car, hopping into the driver's seat and rushing to find Sam.
The pain was starting to subside but my head was still unbearably throbbing.
After a while we got to the pack hospital, Dylan picked me up again, making the pain return.
Before I could tell him not to touch me, a curtain of gray fell over me.
"What's happening to her?" I heard a familiar voice ask. I immediately smiled and open my eyes.
"Zane," I mumbled, still smiling like a little kid in a candy shop. Both Sam and Zane snapped their heads in my direction and Zane shook his head, a sad expression taking over his face.
"It's Dylan. I'm Dylan." My heart dropped and suddenly I couldn't hold back my tears anymore, I could see it was Dylan now as he calmly walked over to me.
"Devina, you're in heat. A special kind because Zane is an Alpha and you're human, things are a little different for you." I tried to sit up but I was too weak. "Zane left and unless he comes back, you will die."
~Zane's POV~
As I was kissing Ashley's neck, I couldn't get Devina out of my head. Something felt off. Something felt wrong. My phone started vibrating in my back pocket and I quickly reached for it.
"Baby, just ignore it," Ashley whined and I rolled my eyes. "Please?" She started kissing down my neck again and took my shirt off. The phone rang again but this time Ashley yanked it out of my hand and threw it against the wall. There goes my phone.
After a few hours of repaying Ashley, we were interrupted by a knock on the door. I quickly got off her and pulled on some pants. When I opened the door, my fists immediately clenched.
"What the hell do you want?" I growled. "Here to take my toys away too?" Ashley came up behind me in only her undergarments and kissed my cheek.
"Hello, Dylan. Long time no see." Dylan looked from me to Ashley and laughed.
"Wow. And you called me shallow, brother?" Without hesitation I lodged him in the nose, causing a small stream of blood to run down his face. "Fine. Let Devina suffer." I tensed at the mention of her name and grabbed Dylan by the collar of his shirt.
"She's suffering because of you! You're the one who came here and ruined everything!" Dylan escaped my grasp and pushed me against the outside wall of Ashley's house.
"I'm sorry!" He yelled and my eyes widened.
"I was doing it to hurt you then I got to know Devina.
She doesn't deserve this. She's happier with you Zane.
" He let go of me and ran his hands through his hair.
We look a lot alike, aside from the color of our hair.
His is blonde, mine's brown. "She's going into heat.
" He looked me straight in the eyes making me chuckle.
"So what? I bet she's just throwing herself at every living male creature now. I don't need to see that."
"No, she isn't." He spat out making me frown in confusion. "She won't let anyone touch her. She won't eat or drink. She just stares blankly at the wall all day Zane." I swallowed the lump in my throat.
"Is she okay?" I whispered and Dylan looked down at the ground, shaking his head.
"She won't make it if you don't come back." I took a step backward and shoved Ashley off of me when she tried to "comfort" me.
"Why should I come back?" I finally said making Dylan furrow his brows.
"You'd let her die?" I don't want to say it, but maybe destiny made a mistake. If we were meant to be together, then why aren't we together now?
"I'm better off without a mate." Dylan clenched his fists, probably mad about my willingness to give up. But what's the point in trying?
"She doesn't deserve this Zane! You're going to let an innocent human girl die because you simply want to give up?
What's wrong with you? I get it, you don't want the same thing to happen as it did with April but that doesn't mean you can throw away some girls life.
" Before he could say anything, his phone rang.
He looked at the caller ID and immediately answered it.
"Sam? How is she?" I focused my ears on their conversation.
"She wants to talk to Zane." Before I could stop myself, I grabbed the phone from Dylan's hands and held it up to my ear.
"Put her on the phone." I heard a few muffled voices before the phone was handed to Devina. I could tell because her breathing was ragged and spaced far apart.
"D-don't." Was all she said at first. I furrowed my brows.
"Don't what?" She took a deep breath and started coughing.
"Don't come. I don't want t-to do this anymore. Please just let me die." She mumbled once she got a hold of herself. By the time she finished her sentence, I had already made up my mind and was hopping into Dylan's car. I let him drive as I talked with Devina.
"Sunshine, I'll be there shortly just hold on okay?" She whimpered making my heart drop.
"No. I won't let you save me this time." My breathing started to quicken as I figured out what she was going to do.
"Don't run Sunshine. Stay with Sam, I'll be there soon. Please don't do this."
"It's over. I was supposed to die a long time ago, Zane." A tear escaped my eye and slid down my cheek.
"No! Dammit, Devina just stay on the line Baby!
Don't run." And with that, she hung up, leaving just me and the endless beeping sound of the line going dead.
Dead. I shook my head. "Fuck!" I screamed and hit the dashboard.
"Go faster, Dylan! She's running away! If I can't find her she's going to die!
" Dylan sped up as fast as he could, but it still wasn't fast enough.
After a few minutes, we finally reached the pack hospital but I could smell her scent. She headed into the woods.
"Here." Dylan took off his shirt and tossed it over to me. "Wouldn't want Dev knowing what you did with Ashley now would we, brother?" I caught the shirt and put it on over my head as I followed her scent.
"Devina?" I called out as her scent got stronger and stronger.
"Devina?" I heard her ragged breathing again and followed the sound.
She was laying down on the shore of a small stream when I found her.
"Sunshine," I ran over to her and pulled her into my arms. "I'm here now.
" Her breathing got better and so did her complexion.
She wasn't looking so dead now. Her blue eyes slowly fluttered open and I smiled.
"Welcome back." Her features hardened and she tried to push me away.
After a few tries, she finally got up and took a few steps back.
"What the hell Zane! I told you not to come!" She yelled, making my eyes widen. This was the first I've heard her cuss. She must be pissed.
"And let you die!?" I stood up with her.
"Yes! And let me die!" I clenched my fists and shook my head.
"You're right when you called me selfish.
I am. I don't care what you asked me, I wasn't going to let you die.
I wasn't going to let you leave me like that.
" I grabbed her hands and intertwined our fingers.
"I've been a mess these past few weeks Sunshine.
" Devina looked away and a tear fell from her beautiful eyes.
"I haven't been able to stop thinking about you.
" She pulled her hands back making me frown.
"Just stick around, okay? I can't promise you anything, but just stay." I smiled and nodded.
"Now let's move you back to your room." She looked down at her hands and shook her head.
"Zane, I think I'm going to stay with Dylan." My first clenched again.
"Why? Why do you want to stay with him!?" Another tear fell and I wasn't sure if it was what I had said, or how I had said it. I wanted to know what happened between them, they both trust each other even though Dylan was the one who ruined things between us in the first place.
"I-I trust him." And not you. Is what she was thinking. "And I'm sorry, but I don't trust you anymore." I dropped my head and ran my hands over my face.
"What happened between you guys?" I calmly asked, looking up into her eyes.
"No. Zane, nothing happened. I may have been mad at you, and honestly hated your guts but I wouldn't do something like that.
" She smiled and this time she was the one who grabbed my hands.
I looked away, a little worried that she might see through me, what I had done with Ashley.
"I made some friends, though." She cracked a smile and so did I.
"Really? That's great." She nodded.
"And I started school. I only have classes in the morning so I leave early with one of my friends.
" I grinned and started walking back to the house, with Devina walking next to my side.
"You know Gillie and Henry right?" I nodded, they were the two kids I saw Devina with before school in the driveway.
"We don't have any classes together, only lunch but I leave before then. "
"Maybe I could pick you up tomorrow? And we can get lunch?" She grinned but then it disappeared.
"I'm going to lunch with Ashton tomorrow. But maybe Thursday?" My blood boiled at the sound of another guy's name.
"Who's Ashton?" I calmly asked, maybe a little too calmly.
"The guy who gives me rides." I snapped my head towards her and stopped walking.
"Gives you rides!?" I yelled and her eyebrows knotted together.
"Yeah." She said in a duh tone. "He doesn't go fast, don't worry.
" I turned around and punched the tree, poor thing snapped and fell over.
"Zane calm down. It's no big deal." No big deal?
She tried to walk forward but I wasn't sure what would happen if she got any closer so I took a few steps back.
"It's fun, and it helped me forget about everything that happened. He's a nice guy, Zane."
"Oh, well as long as he's a nice guy." I sarcastically retorted. "Does he know you have a mate? Does he know I'm your mate?"
"No, I don't want people to treat me differently. If they knew who my mate was, they wouldn't think of me the same." My face must be as red as a lobster now. I was fuming with anger. "If it helps, he makes me put my seatbelt on." She softly added and my face dropped.
"A seatbelt?" I asked, now super confused. Even I've never made any girls do that.
"Yeah. And the ride isn't as nice as with you!" I scowled at her.
"I think I'd remember if you had ridden on me, Devina." Her face turned bright red and her eyes widened.
"On!?" She squeaked, making me confused.
"I was talking about cars Zane! He drives me home from school!
" By now I was clutching my stomach, laughing.
"Y-you are so dirty minded!" She slapped my arm making me completely fall over, pulling her down with me.
We both laughed and rolled around on the ground.
"Only for you, babe." I winked and propped myself up on my elbows. She giggled and nudged my shoulder with hers. "I thought you were having sex with some other guy." I chuckled making her blush again.
"I know. Now stop saying that!" She let her head drop down.
"He is just a friend, right?" She blushed again making me wonder why.
I took a deep breath and smiled. "I wouldn't blame you if he wasn't." I softly replied making her furrow her brows.
"If you tried to move on." She shook her head.
"Hey, I said tried." I winked. "But I'm serious, if you want someone else-" She caught me off by grabbing my face and smashing her lips on mine.
"I don't want anyone else." She finally spoke as she came up for air and I grinned.
"So we're good now?" She flashed me an apologetic smile.
"We're better." I nodded, with her, I'd be okay with anything as long as she was with me. If we're good or better, I don't care. I'm just content with knowing that there is a we.
