Chapter 33- When Alphas Collide

The forest held its breath.

For one suspended moment, everything stood still.

Marcus Vale and Jay Carter faced each other across the dirt road where the trap had sprung. Behind them, Bloodfang wolves paced in tight circles, surrounded now by warriors from both Moonfall and Blackridge. Arrows were drawn above the stone ridge. Blackridge scouts blocked the forest paths.

There was nowhere left to run.

Marcus's eyes gleamed with something dangerous.

Excitement.

"You really think you can kill me here?" he said calmly.

Jay's black wolf stepped forward.

The massive Alpha form radiated raw power, every muscle coiled with restrained violence. His golden eyes never left Marcus.

Jay didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Marcus chuckled softly.

"Still dramatic."

He shifted instantly.

The transformation was brutal and fast. Bones cracked, fur exploded across his skin, and the massive dark wolf emerged where the man had stood. Marcus's wolf was slightly larger than Jay's, built heavier across the shoulders with deep scars marking old battles.

Two Alphas.

Two predators who had ruled wolves for years.

Emily's heart hammered as she watched them circle.

The bond between her and Jay burned with fierce intensity. She could feel his focus like a blade-sharp, controlled, completely locked onto Marcus.

Stay back.

The command brushed across her mind through the bond.

Emily frowned.

No.

Jay's wolf didn't even glance at her.

But the bond flared with frustration.

Emily.

I'm not hiding.

Before he could answer-

Marcus lunged.

The two Alphas collided with explosive force.

The sound of their bodies slamming together echoed through the forest like thunder. Dirt scattered as claws ripped across fur and teeth snapped inches from vulnerable throats.

The battlefield erupted again.

Bloodfang wolves attacked.

Blackridge and Moonfall warriors surged forward to meet them.

Emily shifted instantly.

Silver light burst across the road as her wolf emerged again, fur glowing faintly under the afternoon sun.

She ran straight into the fight.

A Bloodfang wolf leapt toward her from the left.

Emily twisted mid-air and struck him with a silver claw across the chest. The wolf yelped as the blow sent him crashing backward into the dirt.

Another came from behind.

She ducked.

Spun.

Her claws flashed again.

This one didn't get up.

Across the road, Rowan and Liam were fighting side by side, their movements brutal and efficient as they forced Bloodfang's flank away from the ridge.

Emily barely registered it.

Her attention kept snapping back toward the center of the battlefield.

Jay and Marcus.

The Alphas were terrifying to watch.

Marcus fought like a strategist.

Every strike aimed to weaken.

Every movement designed to push Jay toward uneven ground or expose a flank.

Jay fought like a storm.

Relentless.

Direct.

Each time Marcus tried to maneuver, Jay drove forward harder, refusing to yield even an inch of territory.

Claws ripped.

Blood sprayed.

The two wolves slammed into each other again and again with bone-cracking force.

Marcus twisted suddenly, managing to rake a deep slash across Jay's shoulder.

Jay snarled.

Emily felt the pain through the bond like fire across her own skin.

Her wolf roared.

Marcus laughed mid-fight.

"Yes!" he growled.

"That's the bond!"

Emily's vision sharpened dangerously.

Marcus knew.

He had been studying it.

Watching how she reacted every time Jay was hurt.

Rage surged through her.

Silver energy flared across her fur.

Marcus saw it instantly.

His grin widened.

"Perfect."

That was when everything changed.

Marcus feinted left.

Jay lunged.

And Marcus twisted sharply, driving a brutal strike directly toward Jay's exposed throat.

Emily didn't think.

She moved.

Silver exploded across the clearing as she slammed into Marcus mid-attack.

The impact sent all three wolves crashing across the dirt road.

Marcus rolled quickly back to his feet.

Jay rose a second later.

Emily stood between them.

Marcus stared.

Then slowly laughed.

"You're stronger than I thought."

Emily shifted back into human form.

Her chest rose and fell quickly as the silver energy still flickered faintly beneath her skin.

"You keep saying that," she said.

Marcus's eyes gleamed.

"You could rule with me."

Emily almost laughed.

"You're insane."

Marcus shrugged slightly.

"Or ambitious."

Behind them, Bloodfang wolves were beginning to falter. The trap had worked. Moonfall archers controlled the ridge. Blackridge warriors had sealed the forest escape routes.

Marcus could see it too.

But he didn't look afraid.

He looked...

Satisfied.

Jay stepped forward.

"You're finished."

Marcus tilted his head.

"No."

Then he shifted again.

And lunged.
