“I know that all too well, Doctor,” Alex replied with deep resignation, voice soft and tired. “And I fully understand why no one believes me. Hell, I wouldn’t believe it either—and I’m the one sitting here nursing my wife turned into a baby.”
“Oh, I didn’t say I don’t believe you, Alex.
I’m just confirming what others already believe.
However, as you know I’m post-op myself and work every day with people navigating gender and identity.
Do you realize that most of my male patients would give anything—literally their lives and fortunes—to be in the body you’re in right now? ”
“Then they’re crazy.”
“To some, yes. But did you also know that most people in the trans community are very familiar with those stories you mentioned?”
“Huh!”
“You must have realized by now how popular the concept is among trans and gender-questioning folks. The Amulet stories are practically legendary in those circles—fantasies about sudden, uncontrollable transformation. Many would envy your situation, even the parts that feel like torture to you.”
“Well… Mia did say something about envying me. I guess I can see why now. Since I feel so trapped by this body, it never occurred to me that anyone would willingly go through something like this.”
