Chapter Forty - Four
Chapter
Forty-Four
ASHER
Istudy her for a moment, searching for any hesitation. Finding none, I lean forward, one hand coming up to cup her cheek. "Lesson one," I murmur. "Anticipation is the greatest aphrodisiac."
I trace my thumb across her lower lip, deliberately slow, watching as her pupils dilate slightly. "The moments before a kiss," I continue, "can be more exquisite than the kiss itself."
Her breath hitches, but she doesn't pull away. Instead, she leans slightly into my touch, her eyes never leaving mine.
"Magic flows through the body like desire," I tell her, my other hand moving to rest lightly on her knee. "Both require surrender. Control. A delicate balance of giving and taking."
"You speak from experience," she observes, her voice slightly unsteady.
"Centuries of it," I confirm. "The physical and the magical are intertwined. Pleasure unlocks power. Power enhances pleasure. An endless cycle."
My hand slides from her knee up her thigh, a gentle, barely-there touch. Her magic responds instantly, golden light pulsing around us in time with her quickening heartbeat.
"See?" I smile. "Your power knows. It responds to your desire."
"And yours?" she asks boldly.
In answer, I let my own magic surface—a warm, crimson energy that mingles with her gold, creating patterns in the air around us. "Very responsive," I assure her.
Her eyes widen at the display. "It's beautiful," she breathes. "The colors together."
"Yes," I agree, watching the interplay of our magic. "Gold and red. Creation and passion. A powerful combination."
I lean closer, my lips now just inches from hers. "Lesson two," I whisper. "Magic, like pleasure, is meant to be shared."
She closes the remaining distance between us, pressing her lips to mine in a kiss that starts gentle but quickly deepens. Her hands come up to tangle in my hair, pulling me closer with unexpected boldness.
I've kissed hundreds—thousands—of women in my long existence. Some skilled, some innocent, some somewhere in between. But something about this kiss, about the way her magic entwines with mine, sends a surge of heat through me that I wasn't prepared for.
When we finally part, both slightly breathless, the magic around us has intensified, creating a swirling dome of gold and crimson that reflects in dazzling patterns across the water.
"Fast learner," I murmur appreciatively.
"Good teacher," she counters with a small smile.
I should stop here. This was meant to be a lesson, a bit of fun, another way to needle Malachi. But as I look at her—flushed and beautiful in the combined light of our magic—I find myself wanting more. Wanting her, specifically, in a way that goes beyond my usual casual conquests.
Dangerous territory.
"I'm confused," she admits quietly, as if reading my thoughts. "About all of this. All of you. I'm bound to Elias and to Malachi, but I feel drawn to you too. Is that... is that wrong?"
"Wrong by whose standards? Human morality? Trust me, librarian, we left those constraints behind long ago."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean," I explain, brushing a strand of hair from her face, "that magic exists outside conventional morality. Our lifespans are measured in centuries, not decades. Our connections operate on different principles."
"Like what?" she asks, genuinely curious.
"Like resonance," I tell her. "Some magical signatures naturally harmonize with others. It's not about exclusivity—it's about compatibility, about how different energies interact."
"So it's normal?" she presses. "To feel connections with multiple people?"
"In our world? Absolutely," I nod. "The binding with Elias is significant—a restoration of ancient magic. But that doesn't negate other potential connections. Like yours with Malachi."
She considers this, relief evident in her expression. "That makes me feel better. I've been worried that I was somehow betraying them by having feelings for—" She stops abruptly, blushing.
"For?" I prompt, grinning. "Go on, say it. For devastatingly handsome, charming warlocks named Asher?"
She rolls her eyes, but doesn't deny it. "For all of you, in different ways."
"Even Gideon?" I ask, surprised. "Mr. Personality?"
Her blush deepens. "He has... depths."
"If you say so," I shrug. "Personally, I think he's one facial expression away from being a statue, but to each their own."
She laughs, the sound bright and uninhibited. "You're terrible."
"So I've been told," I agree cheerfully. "But you like it."
"Maybe I do," she acknowledges, surprising me again with her honesty. "It's refreshing, after everything else."
I study her, fascinated by the transformation from the shy, uncertain woman I first met to this more confident, direct version.
Binding with Malachi and Elias has changed her, certainly, but there's something more—an inner strength that was always there, just waiting for the right circumstances to emerge.
"You're full of surprises, librarian," I tell her.
"So are you," she counters. "There's more to you than the carefree playboy you pretend to be. Thank you," she says quietly. "For showing me this side of magic. For making me feel less afraid."
Something unfamiliar and warm unfurls in my chest—something I don't want to examine too closely. "Don't thank me yet," I deflect. "We've barely started your education."
Her smile turns slightly wicked. "What's the next lesson, then?"
I lean in, deliberately brushing my lips against her ear. "Patience," I murmur. "Some pleasures are worth waiting for."
She shivers, her magic pulsing brighter in response.
"Besides," I continue, pulling back slightly. "Dawn is approaching, and if Malachi or Gideon find us here, things could get... complicated."
"More complicated than they already are?" she asks wryly.
"Much," I assure her, standing and offering my hand to help her up. "Though I do enjoy complications when they're entertaining enough."
She takes my hand, rising gracefully. Our magic still swirls around us, gold and crimson intertwined in patterns that seem almost reluctant to separate.
"Will you teach me more?" she asks. "About enjoying magic, about..." she hesitates, "the other things?"
"Absolutely," I promise. "Consider me your personal guide to magical hedonism."
She laughs again, the sound becoming one of my favorite things about her. "I'm not sure if that's terrifying or exciting."
"The best things are always both," I tell her with a wink, guiding her toward the door. "Same time tomorrow night?"
She nods, a new confidence in her posture. "I'll be here."
