Chapter Forty - Five
Chapter
Forty-Five
SAGE
The next evening, I find myself outside the Star Chamber, heart pounding with anticipation. My hand hovers over the ornate door handle, hesitating.
Last night with Asher had awakened something in me—a hunger for more than just knowledge, a desire to fully embrace this new magical world I'd been thrust into.
I run my fingers absently over the two bands encircling my left wrist—the physical manifestations of my binding with Elias and Malachi.
They glimmer faintly in the dim light, a permanent reminder of our connection.
Through it, I can sense them both even now—Elias working in his study, calm and focused, Malachi in his quarters, slightly irate, which is normal for him..
Strangely, I feel no conflict, no guilt about seeking Asher out tonight. As he explained, magical connections operate on different principles than human relationships. Resonance, not exclusivity.
Taking a deep breath, I push the door open.
Asher lounges in the center of the room, surrounded by floating orbs of light in various colors that cast dancing patterns across the chamber. The glass ceiling reveals a sky full of stars, more brilliant than the previous night, with a waxing moon approaching fullness.
He looks up as I enter, a slow smile spreading across his face. "Right on time, librarian. I was beginning to think you might have changed your mind."
"Not a chance," I reply, more confidently than I feel.
He rises fluidly, the orbs of light following his movement like enchanted fireflies. "Eager for your next lesson?"
"Depends on what you're teaching," I counter, surprising myself with my boldness.
Asher's smile widens, pleasure evident in his eyes. "Oh, I like this version of you, Sage. Less hesitation, more spark."
I move further into the room, drawn to the shimmering pool at its center. The water is still tonight, perfectly reflecting the stars above. "What are these?" I ask, gesturing to the colorful orbs floating around us.
"Captured emotions," he explains, plucking one from the air—a sphere of vibrant pink light. "Each holds the essence of a different feeling. An old trick, but useful for tonight's lesson."
"Which is?"
He approaches slowly, the pink orb balanced on his palm. "Pleasure through magic. Magic through pleasure. The intersection of sensation and power."
My pulse quickens as he stops before me, close enough that I can feel the warmth radiating from his body.
"May I?" he asks, holding the orb near my face.
I nod, curious.
He gently presses the orb to my forehead, where it bursts in a shower of pink sparks that sink beneath my skin. Instantly, a wave of giddy happiness washes through me—pure joy without context or reason, bubbling up from inside. I laugh, the sound escaping before I can stop it.
"That's..." I struggle to find words.
"Just the beginning," Asher promises, his voice dropping lower. "Each color represents a different sensation. We'll work our way through them."
He gestures to a collection of cushions arranged near the pool. "Shall we begin?"
I follow him, settling onto the plush cushions as he sits across from me, his movements deliberately casual yet somehow charged with purpose.
"Last night," he begins, "we explored how emotions affect your magic. Tonight, we explore how magic affects your emotions—your physical sensations."
He selects another orb, this one a deep blue. "Lesson one: Nothing is more intimate than allowing someone to influence how you feel."
The intensity in his eyes makes me shiver. "Is that what you're doing? Influencing how I feel?"
"Only with your permission," he assures me. "At any point, say stop, and we end this immediately."
I consider his words, weighing the vulnerability he's asking for against my curiosity, my growing desire. "I trust you," I say finally, meaning it.
Something flickers across his face—surprise, perhaps, or something deeper. "You shouldn't," he says softly. "But I'll try to be worthy of it."
He holds out the blue orb. "Your turn to try. Focus on the emotion inside—calmness, tranquility. Then direct it back to me."
I take the orb, feeling its cool energy pulsing against my palm. Closing my eyes, I concentrate on drawing the feeling into myself, letting it fill me with serene tranquility. Then, remembering last night's lesson, I visualize pushing that energy outward, toward Asher.
When I open my eyes, blue light flows from my fingertips to his chest, where it dissolves into his skin. His expression softens immediately, the perpetual mischief in his eyes temporarily replaced by peaceful contentment.
"Well done," he murmurs, his voice mellower than I've ever heard it. "Natural talent."
Pride blooms in my chest at his praise. "What next?"
"This," he says, selecting an amber orb. "Warmth."
Instead of giving it to me, he crushes it between his palms, coating his hands in golden light. Then he moves closer, kneeling beside me. "May I touch you?"
My heart races, but I nod.
His hands settle on my shoulders, and immediately, delicious warmth seeps through my clothing into my skin. Not just physical heat, but a sensation of comfort that travels down my spine, melting tension I didn't know I was carrying. I sigh, leaning into his touch.
"Magic enhances every physical sensation," he explains, his voice a low murmur as his hands move to my upper back, tracing patterns that leave trails of warmth in their wake. "It can transform a simple touch into something transcendent."
His fingers find a knot between my shoulder blades, and as he applies gentle pressure, a pulse of amber magic dissolves the tension instantly. I gasp at the sensation—pleasure without pain, release without struggle.
"That's incredible," I breathe.
"Just getting started," he promises. "Lie back."
I hesitate only briefly before reclining on the cushions. Asher moves to kneel above me, his expression focused as he selects another orb—this one a deep, shimmering purple.
"This," he says softly, "is sensation. Pure, physical awareness."
He crushes it between his palms as before, but this time, when his hands hover above me, not quite touching, I feel it—a phantom caress that somehow reaches beneath clothing, beneath skin, to touch nerves directly.
"Oh," I gasp, unprepared for the intensity.
Asher smiles, clearly enjoying my reaction. "Your senses are already heightened. This just amplifies what's already there."
His hands move above me, never making contact, yet I feel every movement as if he's touching me everywhere at once. It's overwhelming, exhilarating.
"How are you doing this?" I manage to ask, my voice unsteady.
"Magic is intent, focus, and energy," he explains, his own voice deeper now. "I'm directing the sensation where I want it to go. You're receiving it because you're open to it."
His hands hover above my ribs, and I feel a tingling warmth spiral upward. When they pass over my breasts, even though he's not touching me, I feel an exquisite sensitivity that draws a soft moan from my lips.
"That's it," he encourages. "Don't fight the sensation. Let it flow through you."
My magic responds instinctively, golden light emanating from my skin, reaching upward toward his hands like a plant seeking sunlight. Where our energies meet, sparks of pleasure intensify.
"Beautiful," he murmurs. "Your magic seeks connection."
He selects another orb—deep crimson—and holds it out to me. "Your turn."
With shaking hands, I take it, feeling heat pulse against my palm.
"This is desire," he explains. "Raw, unfiltered want. Show me what you want, Sage."
I crush the orb as I've seen him do, coating my palms in crimson light. The sensation is immediate—a hungry, aching need that makes my skin hypersensitive, my breath shallow.
Following instinct, I reach up, my glowing hands stopping just short of touching his chest. I push the feeling outward, toward him, watching as the red light sinks beneath his shirt into his skin.
His reaction is immediate—pupils dilating, breath catching. "Well," he says, voice rougher than before, "you're certainly a quick study."
Emboldened, I move my hands, mimicking his earlier actions, directing the sensation where I want it to go. Though I don't touch him, I see the effect in his expression, the way his body tenses when my hands hover over certain areas.
"Sage," he breathes, my name a question and a warning.
"Yes?" I ask, feigning innocence while moving my hands lower.
He catches my wrists, his grip gentle but firm. "If we keep going this way, we're skipping ahead several lessons."
"Maybe I'm an advanced student," I suggest, surprising myself with my boldness.
His laugh is genuine, though strained. "Clearly." He releases my wrists but doesn't move away. "But there's something you should understand first. About what happens when magic and pleasure combine at their highest intensity."
I sit up, facing him. "You mean the binding."
He nods, expression suddenly serious. "It could happen again. With me. If we take this all the way."
"I know," I admit. "I've been thinking about it since last night."
"And?" he prompts.
"And I want to understand it better. The binding. How it works, what it means." I meet his gaze directly. "You said magical connections aren't exclusive like human relationships. That they're about resonance. Compatibility."
"That's right," he confirms. "But the binding is significant. Permanent. It creates a connection that transcends physical distance, allows emotions and sensations to be shared."
I glance at the bands encircling my wrist. "Like these?"
"Yes. A physical manifestation of the magical bond." He studies my expression. "Are you sure this is what you want?"
The question hangs between us, weighted with implications. Am I sure? Should I bind myself to another warlock?
"I feel drawn to you," I say honestly. "Not just physically. Magically. Like our energies want to connect."
"I feel it too," he admits. "Since that first night at the Ritual. Your signature calls to mine in a way I haven't experienced before."
