CHAPTER 27

He did not stop because discipline failed.

He stopped because she asked him to.

They returned to Breakwater House after the Volkov dinner near midnight.

Security reports waited in the operations room.

A captured bridge attacker had confirmed Maksim's use of paper instructions.

Galina's office had issued three denials and one accusation.

The independent review had traced two more phantom-loss payments.

Caterina read every page.

Then she closed the final file and said, "No more work tonight."

Nikolai looked at the clock. "There are four unresolved alerts."

"There will be four unresolved alerts tomorrow."

"That is not reassuring."

"Good. I am not trying to reassure you."

She stood and held out her hand.

The gesture was simple.

Its meaning was not.

Nikolai followed her upstairs.

Inside the protected suite, Caterina locked the door herself. She removed her gold signet ring and placed it in the safe beside his steel seal. Then she turned to him wearing only the wedding band that represented a choice neither organization had inherited.

"I want you," she said.

No strategy around the statement.

No council listening.

No clause available to absorb the risk.

Nikolai remained near the door because crossing the room too quickly would have felt like losing control and because he wanted her to see that control was still his to give.

"Tell me what that means tonight," he said.

Her eyes darkened.

"It means I want my husband in our bed. It means I do not want gentleness performed because equality has made you afraid of desire. It means you may be commanding in private without mistaking that permission for authority anywhere else."

Heat moved through him with enough force to make stillness painful.

"And if you want me to stop?"

"I will tell you."

"If you want something different?"

"I will tell you."

"If you do not tell me?"

"Then you ask."

The answers were a compact of another kind.

Nikolai crossed the room.

He touched her face first, his palm against the line of her jaw, waiting until she leaned into the contact. Then he kissed her.

The restraint of the Commission hall vanished.

Caterina opened beneath the kiss with a controlled hunger that answered his own. Her hands went to his coat, pushing it from his shoulders. Nikolai caught her waist and drew her close enough to feel the exact breath she lost when his mouth moved to her throat.

"Nikolai."

His name in her voice contained no title.

He wanted to hear it until every fortified part of him recognized the sound.

He carried her to the edge of the bed and stopped before setting her down.

"Yes?" he asked.

Caterina's green-gray eyes held his. "Yes."

He lowered her onto the mattress.

Clothing disappeared slowly, not from hesitation but attention.

Nikolai unfastened each button of her blouse while she watched him, refusing to let desire become something done around her.

Caterina pulled his shirt open and pressed her mouth to the scar near his ribs that few people knew existed. The touch struck more deeply than pain.

He caught her hair in one hand, not pulling, only holding the dark weight of it while she looked up at him.

"You like control," she said.

"Yes."

"So do I."

"I know."

"Then do not confuse my choosing to surrender something with losing it."

The sentence broke the last barrier between restraint and trust.

Nikolai laid her back and made possession a question asked through hands, mouth, and pauses long enough for her answer.

Caterina met every demand with one of her own.

When he told her to look at him, she did because she wanted the command.

When she pulled him closer, he obeyed because her desire carried equal force.

There was nothing ceremonial in the way they came together.

No dynasty in the room.

No heir requirement.

No alliance watching for proof.

Only two adults choosing the same risk with their bodies.

Nikolai entered her slowly, control tightening through every muscle as Caterina's breath broke against his mouth. He stopped until her hand at the back of his neck brought him deeper.

"Do not retreat from me now," she whispered.

He did not.

Their rhythm built from restraint into something more dangerous.

Caterina wrapped one leg around him and used the leverage to change the angle, taking power without interrupting surrender.

Nikolai's hand closed around her wrist above the pillow only after her fingers turned beneath his and held him there.

Permission.

Possessiveness freely given.

He had never understood how control could become more intense when it was not stolen.

Caterina's composure broke first in his name. The sound pulled the last calculation from him. Nikolai followed with his face against her throat, body shaking once despite every discipline he had built.

Afterward, the room remained quiet except for their breathing and the distant movement of water against the island seawall.

Nikolai released her wrist immediately.

Caterina caught his hand before he could withdraw.

"I did not ask you to leave," she said.

He looked at the faint red mark his grip had made.

"Did I hurt you?"

"No."

"Certain?"

"Yes."

She lifted his hand and placed it against her chest.

Her heart beat hard beneath his palm.

The gesture returned him to the morning after their wedding, when he had awakened beneath the same touch and feared moving enough to lose it.

"You are thinking again," Caterina said.

"It is difficult to stop."

"What are you calculating?"

Nikolai looked at her.

Black hair across the pillow. Green-gray eyes unguarded but not diminished. The gold signet remained locked away, yet nothing about her authority had left the room.

"How this can be used against you," he said.

She did not look disappointed.

That was worse.

"And?"

"Against me."

"Yes."

"Wanting you has become the first risk I cannot calculate away."

Caterina's thumb moved once over his wedding band.

"Then stop trying to make love safe," she said. "Make it honest."

Nikolai drew her against him and understood that honesty might require more courage than any violence he had survived.
