CHAPTER 28

She found it in an access register.

The fact pleased her more than flowers would have.

Nikolai was still in the shower when the secure tablet displayed the overnight alliance amendments.

Facility Four. Port Bracken central archive.

Volkov Cold Chain's cyberfinance operations room.

Three foreign terminal repositories. Every access field now recognized Caterina's signature independently.

No countersignature required.

No emergency exception.

No hidden expiration tied to marriage review.

Caterina read the authorization twice.

Her body still carried the warm consequences of the night before. A faint soreness she did not resent. A mark near her hip placed by Nikolai's mouth. The memory of his control breaking only after she invited it.

None of those things mattered as much as the register.

Private desire could be sincere while public power remained false.

This was conduct.

Nikolai entered wearing dark trousers, his hair damp, shirt unbuttoned at the cuffs. He saw the screen and stopped.

"You were meant to receive the notice after counsel verified the fields," he said.

"Counsel verified them at six fifty-eight."

"You were asleep."

"Briefly."

His gaze moved over her face as though checking whether the night had changed the terms of morning.

Caterina turned the tablet toward him. "No countersignature."

"Correct."

"No reserved override."

"Correct."

"Why?"

The question required more than the obvious answer.

Nikolai came to the table. "Because co-signatory access that depends on my approval is not co-signatory access."

"You understood that before."

"I understood it in language."

"And now?"

"Now I understand that preserving a private exception would mean I trusted you only while I remained able to stop you."

Caterina felt the truth enter somewhere tender.

She closed the register.

"Thank you," she said.

Nikolai's expression shifted by a degree. Gratitude made him less comfortable than challenge.

"Do not thank me for complying with the compact."

"I am thanking you for identifying where compliance had remained incomplete."

"That sounds like praise."

"Survive it."

His mouth almost curved.

Caterina opened her own secure folio. "I have an equivalent authorization."

She transmitted a limited credential to him. One segment of her diplomatic network: jurisdiction classifications, emergency route categories, and a protected contact protocol held by Camille. No names. No direct source access. No unilateral extraction.

Nikolai read the terms.

"This is more than we agreed yesterday."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because you accepted the boundary without punishing me for it. Trust should occasionally produce a visible result."

His pale eyes lifted to hers.

"What can I do with this access?"

"Request verification from the network during an alliance emergency. The request reaches Camille and me simultaneously. Neither can suppress notice to the other."

"What can I not do?"

"Identify sources. Contact them directly. Map personal vulnerabilities. Convert the network into a security file."

"Clear."

"You are disappointed."

"I am disciplined."

"Those are not mutually exclusive."

He came around the table, touched her waist, and waited.

Caterina leaned into him.

The kiss that followed was slower than the night before, almost domestic in its lack of emergency. Nikolai's thumb moved over the mark beneath her blouse. Heat answered immediately.

"We have a briefing in twenty minutes," she said against his mouth.

"Nineteen."

"Your romantic development remains alarming."

"I counted one minute for dressing."

She laughed.

The sound surprised both of them.

It ended when two emergency tones entered the room at once.

One from the Nerovelli channel.

One from the Volkov channel.

Caterina reached the first tablet as Nikolai took the second.

DOCK NINE: REFRIGERATED MEDICAL TRANSFER UNDER ACTIVE SABOTAGE.

FACILITY FOUR: COOLING CONTROL FAILURE. ARMED ACCESS SUSPECTED.

The timestamps matched to the second.

Caterina opened Dock Nine's live manifest. Oncology biologics. Insulin stock. Specialized compounds awaiting hospital distribution.

Nikolai's screen showed Facility Four entering emergency lockout under a command bearing Caterina's newly activated signature.

Her access had existed for fourteen minutes.

Someone was already using it.

Nikolai looked at her.

No accusation.

No hesitation.

"Dock Nine is yours," he said.

Caterina opened the joint command channel. "Facility Four is yours."

They moved toward the operations room in opposite directions before turning through the same door.
