CHAPTER 29

Nikolai commanded Facility Four from Breakwater Island while Caterina held Dock Nine together across sixty miles of compromised systems.

The joint operations room divided into two active theaters.

Volkov feeds occupied the eastern wall. Nerovelli feeds occupied the west. Independent evidence monitors ran between them so neither organization could alter its own record without creating a visible discrepancy.

At Facility Four, a false contamination alert had locked seventy-three workers inside controlled zones while a cooling override drove the primary medical vault below safe operating limits.

Too warm would spoil the cargo. Too cold would destroy specific compounds through freezing.

The system had been designed to preserve medicine within a narrow band and was now being used to kill value without creating a dramatic failure.

At Dock Nine, a refrigerated transfer train had received an authentic Volkov reroute directing it toward an abandoned inspection lane beneath armed Nerovelli authority.

Each site appeared to be attacking the other.

"Facility Four manual controls are unresponsive," Daria said. "Local security reports two armed men near the compressor corridor."

Nikolai studied the architectural map. "Do not send the main team through the compressor corridor. It is the visible route. Use the dry-goods access and cut power to Section C locally."

His security chief objected. "That risks total cooling loss."

"For ninety seconds. The backup will engage from a separate controller."

Across the room, Caterina spoke into the Dock Nine channel.

"Do not stop the transfer train. Reduce speed to walking pace and shift it onto the maintenance loop. Isabella, can North Spur accept the lead cars if we separate them?"

Isabella answered through secure video. "Yes, but the switch authority has been overwritten."

"Use the 2008 safeguard panel. It remains mechanically separate."

Nikolai registered the decision without interrupting.

Caterina knew Dock Nine's inherited systems the way he knew Facility Four's hidden routes.

At both sites, officers waited for one spouse to overrule the other.

Neither did.

Facility Four went dark in Section C. Emergency lights came on. The two armed men moved exactly as Nikolai expected, leaving the compressor corridor to prevent access through the dry-goods wing.

Volkov security captured one. The other fired into a control bank and ran toward the loading docks.

"Close Dock Three," Nikolai ordered.

"Workers are still inside the bay," the local manager said.

"Then do not close it. Lock the exterior lane and open the employee shelter. Preserve life before capture."

The attacker escaped the building and found the exterior route blocked by refrigerated trailers positioned under the joint protocol. He abandoned his weapon and climbed a perimeter fence, where Commission officers took him alive.

On the western wall, Dock Nine's transfer train entered the maintenance loop. A false security team appeared at the abandoned inspection lane and opened fire at the empty track, believing the medical cars would pass within seconds.

Caterina's voice remained level. "Record every shot. No return fire until they cross the marked barrier."

The false team advanced.

They crossed.

Nerovelli officers disabled the lead vehicle and pinned the attackers behind concrete freight blocks. One surrendered. Two attempted to reach the rail controls. Dante intercepted them before they reached the switch house.

Nikolai saw him move through the camera feed: fast despite the narrow lane, violence contained to what the threat required. Isabella remained on the North Spur channel, directing the separated medical cars into secure temperature bays she controlled.

The cargo survived.

At Facility Four, the backup cooling system engaged after eighty-seven seconds. The vault temperature stabilized within tolerance. Workers emerged from the controlled zones without injury.

For four minutes, the operations room held only reports.

No deaths.

Three captured attackers.

One damaged control bank.

Two simultaneous attacks prevented from becoming evidence of war.

Nikolai looked across the room.

Caterina stood beneath Dock Nine's live map with one hand against the table and the other holding the command channel. Her black hair remained secured from the morning. Her face revealed nothing of the fear she had managed, only attention moving toward consequence.

"All teams confirm no retaliatory movement," she said. "The false Volkov order at Dock Nine enters independent custody. The false Nerovelli order at Facility Four enters the same repository. No family narrative before authentication."

Nikolai added, "Every officer receives the record that both principals remained in shared command for the complete incident. No one may claim either site acted without the other's knowledge."

The first victory of their married command was not spectacular.

It was the absence of bodies their enemy had expected.

Then Claire opened the Facility Four intrusion path.

"The cooling override did not enter through Caterina's new access," she said. "It was made to appear that way. The originating route came through an older diplomatic contingency credential."

Camille moved closer. "Which credential?"

Claire displayed the access family.

Caterina's chief counsel went completely still.

"That route is mine," Camille said.

The room shifted.

Nikolai looked at Caterina.

Her expression did not change, but the alliance had just placed suspicion within the private network she had defended from his inventory.

"Who knows the route?" he asked.

Camille answered before Caterina could. "Caterina. Me. And one secondary custodian."

"Name?"

"Protected."

Nikolai felt every instinct sharpen.

A private credential known to Caterina's closest counsel had nearly destroyed his facility and framed his wife within fourteen minutes of receiving access.

Caterina met his gaze across the operations room.

"We authenticate before accusation," she said.

The rule was correct.

The danger was immediate.

Nikolai nodded.

"Independent verification," he ordered.

No one in the room heard the second instruction he gave himself.

Find out whether Camille DeLuca had placed the weapon inside their marriage.
