25.
COREY
“Are you serious right now?” the woman screeched the second I got even with her window.
“I could ask the same thing,” I said drolly as I took a second to speak into my mic, knowing that I was going to need backup.
I hoped that it would be Gonzales again because she and this entitled bitch had gotten along so well last time. I smiled when I heard Gonzales' voice come over the radio, answering the call from dispatch.
“Even though I know the answer, I have to ask,” I said with a conspiratorial smile. “Can I please have your license and proof of insurance?”
“No.”
“Ma’am, we’ve been through this before. In order to drive a vehicle in the state of Texas, you must . . .”
The woman looked over at the man in her passenger seat and said, “He must be a rookie.” She looked back at me and said, “I’m not operating a commercial vehicle. I’m traveling in my own private property.”
The urge to lean forward and bang my head against the roof of her vehicle was almost overwhelming, but I managed to resist. This nonsensical argument had started to take root a few years ago, and people on social media had just stoked the fires with misinformation and made things worse.
People who were remarkably stupid thought that they were now law experts and started blathering bullshit about court cases that didn’t even apply to their situation, which only made things worse, especially when they took it too far and resisted arrest. After the solicitation of sexual favors and attempted bribery the last time I encountered this woman, I had a feeling she was going to end up in cuffs again.
Thank God Gonzales was on her way.
A shrill whistle turned my attention to the buildings behind me, and I spun around to see what was going on. I couldn’t help but grin when I saw Janis standing in the open door of the bakery with a few of her employees behind her. I waved before I turned back to the car just in time to hear dispatch reroute Gonzales to a major traffic accident on the other side of town.
The woman in the car was still jabbering on with her bullshit about sovereign citizens’ rights and the fact that she was above the law with a fervor that I could almost admire. Almost. The dimwit in the passenger seat feeding her complete misinformation wasn’t helping anything at all.
“Again,” I interrupted as I put my hand up to stop them from making me lose my shit. “I need to see your driver's license and proof of insurance.”
“I don’t have a valid license because assholes like you make baseless traffic stops so you can meet your ticket quota.”
“If I recall correctly, you were going 18 miles per hour over the posted speed limit the last time I pulled you over. This time you were going 22 over. Whether you’re a sovereign whatever the hell it is or not, you are still breaking the law.”
As she started to argue again, I spoke into my mic again to request backup of any kind. Male. Female. Canine. Monkey with a badge. Mall cop. At this point, anything would work, especially after she had been arrested for propositioning me and then trying to bribe me the last time I encountered her.
Ignoring the woman had made her begin to unravel, and she started screaming gibberish. I took a step back before I looked at the ground and pondered why I hadn’t chosen a career in accounting.
Because you barely passed every math class you were ever forced to take, Forrester. Pay attention. She might be yelling nuclear codes or some shit, and you’re gonna miss it because your head is in the clouds.
But it wasn’t in the clouds. It was in the bedroom at my house that I now shared permanently with Janis since she’d moved in on our three-month anniversary, a little more than a month after she’d been kidnapped. Janis still hadn’t agreed to marry me, but she threw around words and phrases like “I love you” and “future plans” without making a face like she’d just sucked on a lemon, so I considered that progress.
Another patrol car finally arrived, and I was so happy to see Sergeant Gonzales that I could have kissed her, which wasn’t something I’d ever do, especially since the murderous love of my life was still watching me from across the way.
“This is very déjà vu, don’t you think?” Gonzales asked.
“There’s a new ring in this circus,” I warned her.
“What do you mean?”
I tapped on the window that the woman had finally rolled up when she realized I wasn’t listening to her. When it came down a few inches, I asked, “Do you know how fast you were driving?”
“I was not driving. I am traveling. Hopkins v. The State of Texas established a . . .”
I tuned her out and smirked at Gonzales who was already glaring at me. Under her breath, she muttered, “You’ll pay for this, Gnomey.”
“It was you?” I asked.
Now it was her turn to smirk, and I gawked at her in shock. Surely my superior officer wouldn’t stoop so low as to fill my yard with garden gnomes . . . repeatedly. I had no idea where they were coming from and couldn’t imagine how much money had been spent on them over the last few months, but I had an army of gnome statues lined up around my house.
My personal favorite was one that Janis had nicknamed Mirrah - she was wearing glasses, sitting on a stump with a book in hand. Janis liked it so much that she moved it into the guest bathroom, which creeped me out because it felt like she was watching me pee.
In retaliation, I started calling the one that was holding a flower with a bee perched on it in our bathroom “Amanda” and referring to her as Mirrah’s voyeuristic sister.
“How much over the limit was she?” Gonzales asked over the woman’s squawking. Before I could answer, she shook her head. “It doesn’t matter. She’s already failed to identify.”
“Yep.”
“Do you think she’ll run out of steam and come willingly if we stand here long enough?”
“You’re going to arrest her?”
“I’m gonna give her one more chance before I yank her out of the car and stuff her into the back of your patrol car, so I don’t have to listen to her anymore.”
“Why do you hate me?”
Suddenly, the car shifted into gear and took off. In what seemed like slow motion, Gonazles and I looked at each other in shock before we sprinted towards our units to give chase. I jumped behind the wheel and took off. As I turned my head, I saw Janis and a few of her employees jumping up and down, cheering me on.
That woman was absolutely nuts, but God, I loved her.

I parked my motorcycle beside Janis’ and smiled when I saw her at the window, chatting with one of the ladies who came to get dinner often. Somehow, even after all this time, Janis didn’t know her name. That didn’t matter to her, though. They spoke amicably every time she came by, and Janis worried about her on days when she didn’t appear.
Every time the lady took a box from Janis, she gave her a shiny rock that Janis added to the jar on her desk. It was almost full to the brim with the payments she’d received, and I knew that Janis considered them worth more than paper money.
For such a grumpy and outspoken woman, she really did have a heart of gold.
As the woman walked away, Janis called out to me and said, “Don’t bother coming in. I’m finished for the day and just ran out of food. Let’s go for a ride.”
“You say the sweetest things, Medusa,” I called back before I turned around to go sit on my bike and wait.
By the time she made it outside, I had texted a few friends of ours to find out if they wanted to join us on our ride and made plans to meet them on the patio at Spokes first. That worked out perfectly. We could hang out with our friends, eat an early dinner, ride for a while, and then get to bed on time so Janis wouldn’t be tired tomorrow while she worked. I planned to sleep in since I had the day off, but I had plenty of chores around the house to keep me busy. I needed to clean the chicken coop, clean out the gutters before storm season started, and do something with the gnome army in my yard that kept growing.
I heard the metal door shut and looked up to find Janis sauntering my way with a grin. There was an extra sway in her hips, and I wondered what she was up to, but I wasn’t about to ask because I really enjoyed the show.
When she stopped a few feet away from me, I asked, “How was your afternoon?”
“Not nearly as exciting as yours, I’m sure. Did you catch that lady?”
“We did.”
“Did you arrest her?”
“Yes, we did.”
“Did she give you that scratch on your neck?” When I slowly nodded, Janis' eyes narrowed and she asked, “What’s her name?”
“Medusa, you can’t go after everyone I have a problem with at work.”
Janis leaned forward to give me a kiss. She pulled away just far enough to look into my eyes before she snarled, “What. Is. Her. Name?”
“I’m not telling you.”
“I have social media.”
“What does that have to do with anything?”
“I follow a page that posts the mugshots of everyone that gets arrested in the city, and there’s another one for the county. I’ll figure out who she is.”
“And then what?”
Janis gave me an innocent look that didn’t work on anyone who had known her for more than five minutes before she said, “I won’t do anything illegal, Donut. What sort of monster do you take me for?”
“You’re certifiable.”
“Possibly, but you're even crazier than I am.”
“What makes you say that?”
“I was born this way, but you chose this life.”
She did have a point, but I wasn’t willing to admit it. “Let’s go to Spokes to meet the crew before we take a ride.”
“And then when we get home, we can take an entirely different kind of ride.”
“When you say things like that, it reminds me that the crazy is completely worth it.”

I woke up to the most spectacular sight, a work of art that I’d never get tired of, and lifted my head to get a better view.
“Mornin’, Donut.”
“I love it when you wake me up like this,” I said, my voice thick with sleep.
“I love waking you up like this,” Janis said as she slowly lowered herself down on my waiting cock. I reached up and cupped her ample breasts before I sat up so I could kiss that freckle on her collarbone that I loved so much. Janis rode me slowly, rocking against me in that way she’d discovered that took her to orgasm quicker than any other. I enjoyed listening to her throaty moans as she let her head fall back, so I had better access to her neck.
She stayed connected to me while she lifted her legs up and then wrapped them around me, giving me her full weight and taking me even deeper into her body than before. We rocked together as her hands roamed up and down my back while mine held her breasts so I could go back and forth between her sensitive nipples the way she liked.
It didn’t take long for her to reach orgasm, and as much as I wanted to take her there again, I knew she needed to get ready for work, so I slapped her ass before I said, “On your knees, baby.”
Janis gave me a quick peck before she crawled off my lap and put her face down in the pillow, leaving that delectable ass in the air for me to admire. I ran my hands over it a few times before I lined my cock up and thrust hard, filling her again and causing her to moan loudly. My earlier thoughts of making this quick so she wouldn’t be late flew out of my mind, and I reached around her waist to rub her clit.
It didn’t take long before she was screaming my name into the pillow as I came so hard I lost my breath and started to see stars.
I stilled my hips and rubbed my hands over her ass as we both came down from that high and was surprised when my finger caught on her skin somehow. I lifted my hand, and in the dim light coming from the bathroom, I saw something on my finger as Janis pulled her body away from mine and then turned around to face me. I pulled my hand closer and realized that there was a ring on my finger.
“You said I should put a ring on it, so I did.”
“Aren’t I supposed to do something wildly romantic and memorable before I propose and put a ring on your finger?”
Janis avoided the question and asked, “You don’t think morning sex with me is memorable?”
“Every fucking time,” I argued quickly. I looked back down at my hand and then leaned forward to kiss her.
“So, what do you think?”
“I think that loving you is going to be one of the biggest adventures of my life, and I can’t wait to spend the rest of my life showing you just how much you mean to me.”
“I like you a little bit, too, Donut.”
“You’re gonna marry me.”
“I have to. Otherwise, you might escape and I’ll have to start being nice again to draw some other poor unsuspecting man into my web. That’s an awful lot of very painful work, and I’m not really sure I’m up for it.”
I reached out and pulled her into my arms, loving how she fit just perfectly against me.
“I love you, Medusa. I can’t wait to marry you.”
“I love you too.”
