Chapter 19 Rumors of a Killing
After the shop opened, I met all kinds of people, and finally heard news of Zhang Ming from one of the sisters.
Her husband ran escort jobs, so he knew plenty of news.
"A few days ago a young man heard the city was open and wanted to come in to find his wife. That kind of thing isn't rare. Now that peace has come, those men have started remembering us again."
"But guess what? The one closest to Prince Ming stabbed that young man dead the moment he saw him."
"People below were saying the woman he was looking for had deep ties to that man."
No name was mentioned, but after I heard it, the premonition in my chest was strong.
Another woman waiting for makeup snorted and whispered, "Maybe he was just in a bad mood. We all know that one's temper."
"It had to be something. After the young man died they flogged his corpse in public. A whole crowd watched at the city gate. My husband happened to see it. The scene was terrifying. That night he only fell asleep while holding me."
A burst of laughter rose. Cold sweat was already beading on my forehead.
"Ahua?"
Sister Mudan saw my face was wrong and called me.
I rushed out the door at once. Since entering the city, I had never stopped asking after Zhang Ming.
I had mentioned Zhang Ming to Fugeer and asked him to help look, but the moment he heard, his face went terribly dark.
"A man who abandoned Sister and ran deserves to die."
I knew he was angry for my sake, but back then Zhang Ming had his difficulties too. After he left, he had people send word that he would first get The General out of the city, then come back for me. He probably never knew The General's plan.
Standing at the city gate, I suddenly froze, afraid to go any farther.
I was seventeen that year. Zhang Ming was the same age. We were a young couple married only two years.
The shop Sister Mudan and I ran was doing so well. He would never go hungry again.
