Chapter Nine #3

The formalities were over quickly, and before she knew it, Zara felt Jay’s hand finding hers as they stepped onto the dance floor to Frank Sinatra’s ‘The Way You Look Tonight’.

The crooner’s soothing voice and the timeless melody enveloped them like a warm embrace.

They tumbled into each other’s gazes, their bodies moving in perfect synchronicity, each step a silent declaration of their love for one another.

When the chorus echoed, Jay led her in a gentle twirl, her dress fanning out like delicate flower petals scattering around them.

Feeling as if she were on cloud nine, she looked up and into his piercing blue eyes, and for a moment it was as if they were the only two people in existence, dancing at the edge of eternity.

Lost in one another, they danced through the verses, adrift in the shared rhythm of their heartbeats.

Time seemed to stretch, creating a sacred space for them to make their eternal promises to each other.

And as the last notes of the song faded into the evening air, they remained clasped in each other’s arms, two souls adrift in the boundless sky of their affection, floating into the twilight of their forever.

The dance floor quickly became a picture of swirling colours as their first dance came to its tender conclusion and the guests joined in the festivities, encircling them in a blur of colourful hues and dark suits.

Mark twirled his little daughter Jasmine around, a tender look on his face.

Zara was so thrilled that his ex, Kelly, had agreed to let Jasmine be there, and she prayed this would mean an end to their ugly custody battle.

Then among the dancers, Nadine and Joseph Maverick emerged, their smiles carving deep lines of pride into their faces.

Joseph paused within the throng of grooving and swaying bodies with his hand extended towards his son in a gesture of paternal approval.

Meanwhile, Nadine gracefully moved towards Zara with open arms, enveloping her in a maternal embrace that said more than words ever could.

Their eyes met, and for a brief second Zara’s heart twinged with the pang of yearning for her late mother.

But as quickly as the feeling came, it dissolved into the warmth that radiated from Nadine’s motherly touch in a reminder that family needn’t be tied by blood alone.

For her, blood had been spilt because of it.

‘May I?’ Joseph’s voice broke through her reverie as he held his hand out to his wife.

‘Of course,’ Zara replied, gracefully stepping back into Jay’s arms.

The quartet, bound by love if not by lineage, moved in perfect sync around one another, their steps less rehearsed but no less meaningful.

Nadine held a softness that belied her strength, and Joseph swayed with calm deliberation, each motion a testament to decades of weathering life’s storms with gentlemanly grace.

Wrapped up in their presence, Zara felt the roots of her new family tree taking hold in the fertile soil of her heart as the music continued to drift through the air, the melodic notes like seashells whispering secrets of the deep blue sea.

A few songs later, after the music subsided and speeches began, the tides of the evening turned towards reflection and joyous anticipation.

‘Zara and Jay,’ Suzanne began, her voice threading through the crowd.

‘You’ve shown us what it means to love unconditionally, and how, if committed, two people can get through the hardest of times, more in love than ever.

’ Raw emotion glistened at the corners of her eyes.

‘We all strive for a love as grand as yours. I’m so very happy for both of you. ’

Zara mouthed I love you, and Suzanne reciprocated with a teary smile.

Glasses clinked then Suzanne’s laughter bubbled up as she recounted tales of their long friendship, and of the parts of the courtship she’d been privy to along the way.

‘So, as you stand on the threshold of this new chapter in your lives, remember that the greatest adventures are those you embark upon together, hand in hand, heart to heart.’ Her gaze flickered between Zara and Jay, a knowing smile playing on her lips.

‘Cheers to you both living a long, happy life together.’

After an echoing of clinking glasses, Mark’s toast followed.

‘To my brother from another mother, who’s found his guiding star, and to Zara, who shines with a light all of her own.

I think it’s fair to say, you two were made for each other, in every single way.

It’s an absolute honour to be sharing this special day with you.

’ He raised his glass. ‘May your marriage be filled with adventure, laughter, and an abundance of love.’

As the room resounded with cheers, Zara looked over the gathering of familiar faces.

The flickering candlelight painted their expressions in hues of warmth and joy, creating a tableau of the memorable night that would be captured for eternity in her heart.

Here, amid the festive laughter and the happy tears, it felt as if time had paused to honour the journey she and Jay had embarked upon.

‘Hey there, wifey.’ Leaning into her, Jay whispered into her ear. ‘Do you want to join me outside for a snippet of quiet?’

Smiling, she nodded, and he took her by the hand.

Weaving through the crowd, they stepped out and into the night, finding respite under the boughs of an ancient gum tree.

Here they paused, grateful for the canopy of leaves that shielded them from the festivities.

In the soft glow of moonlight, Jay’s piercing blue eyes captured her caramel browns as the world around them faded away, leaving only the stillness of their shared breath.

With his arms encircling her waist, he drew her closer into his embrace, the haven she’d never known until him.

‘Today,’ she said, her voice a whisper, ‘has been a dream come true.’

‘I concur.’ Jay nodded and smiled. ‘And you, Mrs Maverick, are a sight to behold.’

‘Thank you, my handsome husband.’ Finding herself wrapped up in his big, strong arms, Zara rested her cheek against his chest and smiled into the soft light cast by the twinkling fairy lights adorning their private sanctuary. ‘Can we just stay here for the rest of the night?’

‘Even though I’ve loved every second with our family and friends,’ Jay sighed softly, ‘I really wish we could.’

The sounds of voices and music swirling together melted into a soothing hum as they both allowed the day to really sink into their souls.

‘Thank you,’ Zara eventually murmured, her eyes glistening with tears that reflected her past struggles, future hopes, and present bliss. ‘For being my everything, and for loving me like you do.’

‘Oh, my darling Zaza.’ Pulling back just a little, so he could glance down at her, Jay gently brushed away her tears. ‘You’ve given me the purest love I’ve ever known, so how could I not love you as much as I do?’

Gratitude swelled within Zara’s chest, filling the spaces once hollowed by loss — of her father, her mother, and then their baby girl — and it was all she could do not to burst into tears.

Under the rustle of leaves and the sound of the ocean kissing the coastline, a sacred silence fell as their hearts spoke in a language beyond words.

In Jay’s unwavering presence, she felt the peace she’d longed for, and the steadfast assurance that every ebb in her life would be met with an equal flow.

It was a surety she’d never known existed until Jay Maverick waltzed into her life.

‘I love you, my dear Jay.’ She sniffed back tears as she nestled into him.

‘And I love you, my sweet Za, more than yesterday, but not as much as I know I will tomorrow.’ His deep voice rumbled in her ear before he pressed a lingering kiss to her forehead, his warm touch instantaneously igniting a spark of hope for the family they longed for.

It was a feeling that took Zara by surprise, one she’d never thought possible after the loss they’d endured.

However, she also understood it was a sensation brought about by finding someone who grasped and accepted every part of her, and by knowing she’d be loved by this wonderful man throughout her life, regardless of whether or not they had children.

‘I never knew hope could feel so tangible,’ she whispered, unable to contain the overwhelming emotion within her. ‘It’s as if I could grab it in both my hands and hold it tight.’

Jay’s arms tightened around her as he murmured against her hair. ‘Hope has always been your gift, Zara, and you’ve taught me how to see it, even in the darkest moments.’

‘I have?’ She looked up at him from beneath her teary lashes.

‘Yes, you have. I mean, just look at us,’ Jay whispered, his fingertips tracing the outline of her face with tenderness. ‘From two wandering souls to this, to us.’

‘I love us.’ Zara smiled softly, knowing it was not only the rings on their fingers that bound them, but also the invisible threads of destiny that had woven their separate paths into one.

‘Let’s make another vow, right here, right now,’ Jay continued, his voice resonating like a grounding force beneath her feet, ‘to weather every storm together, to navigate by the stars when the sun hides, and to always find our way back to this magic moment of serenity.’

‘I promise with all of my heart that I’ll do just that.’ Reaching up on her tippy toes, Zara sealed their pact with a kiss that quickly went from tenderly gentle to mind-blowingly passionate.

With a sexy growl of hunger for her, Jay encircled her waist with his solid arms. The heat of his hands pressing against her back caressed through the fabric of her gown, making her want to get rid of the clothing so she could feel him, skin on skin.

Soon, but not now.

After the reception, they had all night long to make love to one another.

So, under the watchful gaze of the ancient tree, with moonlight filtering through the branches and dancing upon their skin, the two hearts beating as one set sail on a beautiful journey with the unwavering certainty that no matter where life’s currents took them, they’d always return to each other’s embrace upon the shores of their love.

And as the distant sounds of laughter and chatter from the reception drifted to them, mingling with the heady scent of jasmine that wafted from nearby hedges, their lips parted and she snuggled even closer to Jay, seeking the warmth and safety of his embrace.

They were two peas in a pod, the missing pieces of their life’s jigsaw now found in one another, and she couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed by the beauty of this majestic moment.

They were finally married, their souls forever intertwined in a bond that felt unbreakable.
