Chapter Nine #2
Pausing at the end of the aisle, just out of sight, her heart two-stepped excitedly as their chosen love song, ‘I Can’t Help Falling in Love with You’, started playing.
Taking a moment, she breathed in nice and deep as she looked to the garlands of purple, pink and yellow flowers intertwined with the delicate strings of fairy lights adorning the wooden beams above.
All around her, the old stone walls, weathered by years of history, stood as silent witnesses to their upcoming nuptials, and the sunlight streaming through the stained-glass windows cast a mesmerising medley of colours over the flower-scattered aisle where she was taking now steady steps.
With her view dappled by her antique lace veil — her ‘something borrowed’ from Nadine — and her arm in the crook of the man who’d gladly stepped up to the role of the father she’d never really had, she took her very first step towards her handsome husband-to-be.
Waiting for her at the altar of the quaint seaside chapel they’d meticulously chosen for their special day, Jay looked even more handsome, if that were possible.
Suzanne had led the way moments before, along with Mark’s two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Jasmine, who was their sweet little flower girl.
Suzanne stood proudly off to the side as her maid of honour, her bright green eyes shimmering with teary happiness for her.
Mark, carrying out his role as best man with quiet dignity, offered a warm smile and a reassuring nod as she reached the front.
Gracing her with a fatherly glance, Joseph then gave her hand over to his one and only son.
Zara’s heart swelled with even more emotion as she met Jay’s gaze, so full of love and overflowing with promises for their future together.
As they shared soul-deep regard, the air between them seemed to crackle with electricity in a palpable connection that transcended words and time.
She barely held her emotions at bay as she tumbled into his piercing blue eyes — eyes that held the depth of the ocean, calm and serene, and the freedom of the bright blue sky she’d awoken to that morning.
The warmth of his hands as he clasped hers was a tangible vow of support and togetherness in this shared moment of vulnerability.
The celebrant started the ceremony by welcoming all, and then in what felt like the blink of an eye it was time for their vows.
In between breaths the entire world seemed to fade away, leaving only the two of them standing at the precipice of forever; it was the way she always felt in her dreams when she stood on the mountaintop.
‘My beautiful Zara,’ Jay began, his voice steady but heavy with emotion, ‘I stand before you humbled by the unreserved love you’ve shown me.
In your eyes, I’ve found my home, and in your heart, I’ve discovered my sanctuary.
’ He paused, taking a moment to inhale, then exhale.
‘With this vow, I pledge to be your haven in the tempest, your compass when direction is lost, and your sail to catch the winds of our dreams, always and forevermore.’
Doing her best not to weep at his heartfelt words, Zara felt tears brimming within her adoring eyes as she took a steadying breath, readying herself to speak of her love and commitment for this amazing man.
‘My darling Jay, you are my lighthouse in the darkest of nights, guiding me to safe shores, and your love is my tide, rising to meet the shore of my soul.’ Her voice, though soft, carried the weight of her resolve.
‘Today, and every day, I vow to navigate life’s seas with you, for in your love, I’ve found the courage to chart the path of my heart. ’
The small congregation of friends and family watched with bated breath as the enduring dance of commitment and hope played out before them.
Having survived some very bumpy roads, and now at the edge of a shimmering new beginning, Zara Monroe and Jay Maverick were not just two souls uniting, they were the embodiment of every love story ever whispered by the wind or written in the stars.
And as the final echoes of their vows drifted through the chapel, the united exhilaration was profound.
Zara’s heart swelled with sentiment as she watched Jay take the delicate gold band from Mark.
The ring glinted in the soft light filtering through the stained-glass windows, casting prisms of rainbow across its simple yet elegant design.
And as he took her left hand in his, and they were so close to making their love story official, it was all she could do to remain poised, still, and breathing steadily.
‘Zara.’ His voice resonated with a sense of deep commitment. ‘With this ring, I offer you all of me, now, tomorrow and forevermore.’
With a gentle push the cool metal slid onto her finger, its comforting weight grounding what remained of her former drifting life.
Looking lovingly towards it, she genuinely felt their bond physically manifest in this circle of trust and love — an unspoken vow of eternity.
A single tear escaped and traced a path down her cheek.
Reaching out, Jay affectionately, protectively, brushed it away and she felt herself love him all the more.
Then, mirroring his gesture from earlier, she reached out to Mark, for the band that would eternally encircle Jay’s finger just as surely as his presence had enveloped her life.
Taking a slow, steadying breath, she looked to him.
‘Jay,’ she began, her voice barely above a whisper but carrying the strength of her unwavering love.
‘This ring is my sacred promise to always traverse life by your side. In its never-ending loop, I see our journey, without end, without doubt, forever intertwined.’
After she slipped the wedding band onto his finger, their hands lingered together as they gazed into each other’s eyes, their fingers entwined like roots beneath the earth’s surface.
The significance of the ceremony hung in the air, a tangible force that permeated every word spoken and every glance exchanged.
Every day after this one was a blank canvas on which they’d paint their dreams, a tapestry of moments both monumental and mundane that would shape their shared existence.
And as the celebrant pronounced them husband and wife, time seemed to stand still, granting the newlyweds a fleeting eternity within the confines of a single breath.
Then they leant into their first lingering kiss as a newly married couple.
It was tender and sweet and unhurried, a gentle meeting of lips that spoke of passion restrained by the sanctity of the moment.
Guests rose to their feet and the chapel erupted with cheers and applause in a symphony of joy that danced on the air.
Each clap, each smile, was a wave caressing the shore of their undying love.
And when they finally pulled apart, breathless and flushed with excitement, they looked into each other’s eyes and no more words were needed as doting friends and family surged forward in a wave of love and good wishes.
Having patiently waited for her moment, Suzanne danced on the spot as she hugged Zara tightly.
‘You’ve finally found your one true love, my awesome bestie,’ she said, her voice carrying their years of friendship.
‘Jay is most certainly your always and forevermore.’ She jiggled excitedly again. ‘I’m so happy for you.’
‘I know you are, thank you, Suz.’ Zara gave her best friend’s hand a squeeze. ‘And I reckon it’ll be your turn next.’
‘Pfft, yeah right, I have to find a man to love first.’ Suzanne rolled her eyes.
Zara laughed, the sound bubbling up from her romantic heart. ‘Oh, you’ll find him,’ she said, her eyes sparkling with certainty. ‘He’s out there, just waiting for you to stumble onto his path so he can sweep you off your stiletto-loving feet.’
‘Oooh, I like the sound of that.’ Suzanne grinned spiritedly. ‘Maybe he’s a dashing prince on a white horse, and he’s going to grab me and gallop off into the sunset.’
Zara chuckled, imagining Suzanne’s Prince Charming galloping in on a majestic steed. ‘Or maybe he’s a humble knight in shining armour,’ she teased. ‘Ready to love and protect you like nobody ever has.’
‘Oh, nice one, let’s hope so, hey.’ Suzanne’s head tipped back as she laughed out loud.
Their mirth mingled with the sound of congratulations and best wishes surrounding them, creating a bubble of happiness that seemed to encase the chapel.
And as the sun dipped lower in the sky, casting vibrant pinks and oranges across the landscape, the newlyweds made their way to the reception held in a nearby hall.
With the spring weather a temperate twenty-two degrees, the sweet scent of blooms dotted among the lavishly decorated tables mixed with the salty kiss of the ocean breeze drifting through open windows, all of it creating an enchanting ambiance.
