Memphis
The scent of vanilla, mandarin, and something both familiar and addictive fills my lungs.
A sea of blonde hair and soft skin greets me when I open my eyes.
I don’t remember passing out…or the last time I slept so well.
I’m debating catching another hour of shut-eye but shouting in the hallway has Sky stirring in her sleep. Less than a second later, all four of her limbs tighten around me.
The girl is like a damn octopus.
A really cute one.
Fuck. I’ve missed waking up next to her.
Hell, I’ve missed everything about this girl.
It hits me like a two-by-four to the nuts.
I’ve told some colossal lies in my lifetime, but the biggest one of all was convincing myself that I could keep my distance from her.
Suddenly, those octopus limbs stretch out, one hitting me square in the jaw.
“Easy, Muhammad Ali.”
Her pretty eyes flutter open in shock. “I’m so sorry. Are you okay?”
She packs a mean punch, but I’ve felt worse. “Eh. I think I’ll live.”
She smiles and fuck me, if it isn’t like seeing sunlight after a lifetime in the dark. “Good, because I might miss you.”
I raise a brow. “Might?”
Gripping her hips, I roll onto my back, pulling her flush against me. “You still talk in your sleep by the way.”
She idly traces the tattoo on my ribs. “Oh, yeah? What do I say?”
I give her a sly grin. “The usual. Memphis is a sex god. He’s an incredibly sexy—”
“Asshole.” Poking me in the ribs, she returns my grin. “He’s an incredibly sexy asshole.”
I wink. “With a huge cock.”
One that stirs to life when she slithers down my torso. “Is that so?”
I fold my arms behind my head. “Only one way to find ou—”
I’m cut off by frantic pounding on the door followed by Storm shouting, “Open the fuck up.”
Shit.
Sky quickly wraps the sheet around her body, covering herself while I grab my boxers off the floor.
So help him God, this better be important.
I fling open the door. “What—”
He barges past me into the room. “Phoenix just called me freaking out. Something’s wrong with Josh.”
That’s hardly news. “What else is fucking new?”
Storm looks at Skylar, who’s scrambling to get dressed. “What do you mean something is wrong?”
“I don’t know the details. He just told me to get you right away.”
She makes a beeline for the door. “Crap.”
I charge after her, grabbing her arm before she makes it out of the room. “You can’t keep cleaning up his messes.”
Josh is a grown-ass man. She has to cut the cord. For good.
“I can’t do this with you right now,” she says, her tone panicky. “I have to go.”
Surprise, surprise.
Whatever compassion I had goes out the window and is replaced by pure acrimony. “Walk out that door, and you’re a fucking idiot.”
She yanks her arm away. “Why do you care? It’s just sex. Remember?”
I do.
But now I also remember why it will never be just sex with her.
I let my silence do the talking, which only pisses her off more given the way her nostrils flare before she runs out the door.
Storm opens his mouth, but I cut him off before he speaks. “Not a fucking word.”
The scent of vanilla and mandarin lingers long after she’s gone.
I’m a fucking idiot for thinking it could ever be just sex…and a fucking idiot for thinking it could ever be more than sex.
Because I’ll always choose her.
And she’ll always choose him.
