CHAPTER 11 The Brother in the Shadows #2
“You made me believe leaving was the only way to keep him alive.”
“Yes.”
Sofia’s anger sharpened into clarity.
“So congratulations.”
Adrian stared.
“You got exactly what you wanted.”
“What?”
“You separated us.”
Silence.
“For three years.”
His eyes narrowed.
“And in those three years, I had Matteo.”
Adrian’s face changed.
Sofia saw it.
There.
Something ugly.
Jealousy.
Not toward Dante.
Toward a child.
She understood.
“You hate him.”
Dante stepped closer.
“What?”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“I don’t hate the boy.”
“Yes, you do.”
Sofia continued.
“Because he proves you lost.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Dante looked between them.
Sofia kept going.
“He is Dante’s son.”
Silence.
“Not yours.”
Adrian’s face became cold.
“He was supposed to be mine.”
Dante fired.
This time the bullet grazed Adrian’s shoulder.
Blood appeared.
Adrian looked down.
Then back up.
Dante’s voice was almost gentle.
“Say that again.”
Adrian smiled.
“You think biology makes you his father?”
“Yes.”
Dante’s answer was immediate.
“And raising him will make me more of one.”
Adrian’s smile vanished.
That hit harder than the bullet.
Sofia looked at Dante.
He meant it.
Not blood.
Not designation.
Raising.
Choosing.
Every day.
Adrian stepped toward them.
“You won’t have the chance.”
Dante raised the gun.
“Try me.”
Adrian looked toward the console.
Then Sofia.
“You accepted Custodian authority.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Sofia frowned.
“You wanted that.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because only the Custodian can give me what I need.”
Dante’s eyes narrowed.
“What?”
Adrian smiled.
“My identity.”
Sofia stared.
“What does that mean?”
Elena whispered, “No.”
Everyone looked at her.
Adrian’s face changed.
“You finally understand.”
Elena pushed herself upright.
“Sofia, do not give him archive access.”
“Why?”
“Because Adrian doesn’t legally exist.”
Silence.
Sofia frowned.
“What?”
Elena continued.
“He was erased from every civil record when the Circle took him.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
“No birth certificate.”
“No passport under his real name.”
“No inheritance.”
Dante understood.
“You want Moretti status.”
Adrian’s eyes moved toward him.
“I want what was stolen.”
“The empire.”
“My name.”
“You want my life.”
Adrian laughed.
“It was mine first.”
Dante’s face became cold.
“Our father gave you away.”
“He was forced.”
“Were you there?”
“No.”
“Then stop romanticizing a man who failed all of us.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
Interesting.
Pain.
Old.
Deep.
For one second, Sofia saw not a monster.
A child.
Taken.
Erased.
Raised as a tool.
Then he looked at her again.
And the obsession returned.
“You can restore me.”
Sofia shook her head.
“I can restore records?”
“Custodian authority can authenticate lineage.”
Elena answered.
“Yes.”
Sofia looked at her.
“So if I verify Adrian as M-01—”
“He becomes recognized within every Circle-linked system.”
“Financial?”
“Yes.”
“Moretti trusts?”
“Some.”
Dante’s face hardened.
“He could challenge control of the empire.”
Adrian smiled.
“Now you understand.”
Sofia looked at him.
“You came here for power.”
“And you.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
His eyes sharpened.
“You are Custodian.”
“So?”
“Together we would control both systems.”
Dante almost laughed.
“There it is.”
Sofia stared at Adrian.
“You didn’t want me.”
His expression changed.
“You wanted what I could unlock.”
“No.”
“You watched me for years because I was useful.”
“No.”
“You call that love because obsession sounds ugly.”
Adrian’s face hardened.
“Be careful.”
Sofia stepped closer.
“No.”
Dante moved with her.
Adrian noticed.
Sofia continued.
“You had twenty years of people telling you I belonged to you.”
“Yes.”
“And you believed them.”
“Yes.”
“That does not make it true.”
Adrian’s voice lowered.
“You think Dante is different?”
Sofia looked at him.
“Yes.”
“He once believed you belonged to him.”
Dante said nothing.
Sofia nodded.
“Yes.”
Adrian smiled.
“Then?”
Sofia looked at Dante.
“He learned.”
Silence.
Dante’s face changed.
Sofia turned back.
“That is the difference.”
Adrian’s expression became dangerous.
Then he reached inside his jacket.
Dante fired.
Adrian moved.
Not for a weapon.
A remote.
He pressed it.
The vault doors slammed shut.
Red alarms activated.
Elena shouted, “What did you do?”
Adrian smiled.
“Locked external access.”
Dante aimed at him.
“Open it.”
“No.”
Luca’s voice crackled through the radio.
“Boss?”
Static.
Then:
“Doors sealed.”
Sofia’s heart raced.
“Matteo?”
Dante demanded.
“Safe, but—”
The radio cut.
Adrian looked satisfied.
Dante moved toward him.
“Whatever you planned, it ends now.”
“No.”
Adrian looked at Sofia.
“It begins now.”
The central console changed.
**CUSTODIAN AUTHORITY REQUEST**
**RESTORE M-01**
Sofia stared.
A timer appeared.
**04:59**
“What happens when it reaches zero?”
she asked.
Elena went pale.
“If no decision is made, emergency succession may auto-authenticate.”
Dante looked at her.
“May?”
“I’ve never seen this.”
Adrian smiled.
“I have.”
Sofia’s stomach tightened.
“You built this.”
“I modified it.”
Mercer laughed from the floor.
Everyone turned.
Adrian looked at him with disgust.
“Still alive?”
Mercer smiled.
“Barely.”
Adrian raised a gun Sofia had not seen.
He shot Mercer once.
Silence.
Mercer collapsed.
Dead.
Dante’s eyes hardened.
“We needed him.”
“No.”
Adrian lowered the gun.
“You needed me.”
Sofia stared at Mercer’s body.
So casual.
No hesitation.
Adrian looked at her.
“Restore me.”
“No.”
“Then the protocol does it automatically.”
“Why ask?”
“Because I want your choice.”
She almost laughed.
“My choice?”
“Yes.”
“You spent years manipulating every option.”
“I gave you time.”
“You stole it.”
His expression hardened.
“Restore me.”
Sofia looked at the screen.
**04:11**
Dante moved beside her.
“Can you cancel?”
She searched the interface.
“No.”
“Terminate?”
The option was unavailable.
Elena moved toward the console.
“Custodian lock.”
Carlo pushed himself upright.
“There may be another way.”
Dante turned.
“What?”
“Lineage dispute.”
Adrian’s face changed.
“No.”
Good.
Sofia noticed.
“What is lineage dispute?”
Carlo continued.
“If two Moretti successors contest M-01 authority, the system requires blood verification.”
Dante understood.
“Against me.”
“Yes.”
Adrian raised his gun.
“Stop.”
Dante smiled coldly.
“Found the nerve.”
Sofia looked at the screen.
A hidden option appeared after Elena entered a code.
**DISPUTE M-01 STATUS**
Sofia pressed it.
Adrian fired.
Dante shoved her down.
The bullet struck the console.
Sparks exploded.
Dante returned fire.
Adrian ducked.
Elena shouted.
“System still active!”
Sofia crawled behind the console.
The screen flashed.
**M-01 CLAIM DISPUTED**
**SECONDARY CLAIMANT REQUIRED**
Dante approached.
“Me.”
Elena nodded.
He placed his hand against the scanner.
Blood verification.
**M-04 CONFIRMED**
Then:
**RELATIONSHIP TEST REQUIRED**
Sofia frowned.
“DNA?”
Elena nodded.
Dante pressed his finger against the needle.
Sample taken.
A second scanner illuminated.
Adrian stared.
He had to provide blood.
Dante smiled.
“Your turn.”
Adrian raised the gun.
“No.”
“If you don’t, your claim dies.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
The system displayed:
**M-01 AUTHENTICATION PAUSED**
The countdown froze.
Sofia exhaled.
Adrian aimed at her.
Dante stepped between them.
“Predictable.”
Adrian laughed.
“You would die for her.”
“Yes.”
No hesitation.
Adrian’s eyes flickered.
Then he looked at Sofia.
“And would she die for you?”
Sofia stepped around Dante.
“Yes.”
Dante turned.
“No.”
She almost smiled.
“See? Still controlling.”
“This is one area where I refuse personal growth.”
Despite everything, she laughed.
A tiny sound.
Adrian’s face twisted.
He hated it.
Their ease.
Their history.
Their choice.
Sofia understood then.
That was why they would win.
Not because Dante was stronger.
Not because she was Custodian.
Because Adrian could understand possession but not partnership.
He could understand leverage but not trust.
Sofia looked at him.
“You want to beat Dante?”
Adrian stared.
“Yes.”
“Then stop hiding behind systems.”
Dante looked at her.
“Sofia.”
She ignored him.
“Give the blood sample.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“And?”
“If you’re really M-01, prove it.”
Dante understood what she was doing.
His expression remained still.
Adrian stepped toward the scanner.
He wanted legitimacy too badly.
Wanted the name.
The bloodline.
The acknowledgment.
He pressed his finger against the needle.
Blood entered the system.
The screen processed.
Silence.
Then:
**M-01 BIOLOGICAL LINEAGE CONFIRMED**
Dante stopped breathing.
Adrian smiled.
Truth.
He really was Dante’s brother.
Then another message appeared.
**WARNING: M-01 SUCCESSION RIGHTS REVOKED**
Adrian’s smile disappeared.
“What?”
Elena stared.
“Revoked?”
The screen continued.
**REVOCATION DATE: 24 YEARS PRIOR**
Dante frowned.
“That was before Marco died.”
Carlo whispered, “Antonio.”
Adrian went pale.
“No.”
Sofia looked at him.
“Your father revoked you.”
“No.”
Dante stared at the screen.
Another file unlocked automatically.
**ANTONIO MORETTI — FINAL LINEAGE DIRECTIVE**
Dante stopped.
His father.
Adrian moved toward the console.
“No.”
Sofia opened it.
A video began.
Antonio Moretti appeared.
Older than Sofia remembered.
Tired.
He looked directly into the camera.
“If this file is being viewed, then Adrian has attempted restoration.”
Adrian froze.
Dante stared.
Antonio continued.
“My first son was taken from me.”
Adrian’s eyes filled with rage.
“I spent years trying to find him.”
Dante’s face changed.
Antonio continued.
“When I finally did, the Circle had already shaped him into something I could not bring home.”
Adrian whispered, “Liar.”
The video continued.
“I do not blame the child he was.”
Silence.
“But I fear the man he has become.”
Adrian’s hands shook.
