CHAPTER 11 The Brother in the Shadows #3
Antonio looked into the camera.
“If Adrian ever seeks Moretti succession through force, manipulation, or bloodline authority, his claim is permanently revoked.”
Sofia looked at Dante.
He seemed unable to breathe.
Antonio continued.
“Marco remains heir.”
A pause.
“And if Marco falls, Dante.”
Dante closed his eyes.
His father had chosen him.
Not simply because no one remained.
Chosen.
The video continued.
“Dante will hate this burden.”
For the first time, something almost like humor appeared in Antonio’s face.
“He always has.”
Dante’s mouth tightened.
“But he understands something Adrian does not.”
Antonio’s expression became serious.
“Family is not what blood gives you.”
Sofia’s chest tightened.
“It is what you refuse to sacrifice.”
Silence.
Adrian stared at the screen.
Antonio’s final words came quietly.
“If you are hearing this, Adrian, I am sorry I failed to save you.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
“But I will not let that failure destroy my other sons.”
The video ended.
Silence.
No one moved.
Adrian looked broken.
For one second.
Then rage replaced everything.
“You.”
He looked at Dante.
“You took it.”
Dante stared.
“No.”
“Our father.”
“No.”
“My name.”
“No.”
“My place.”
“No.”
Adrian raised his gun.
“You took everything.”
Dante’s voice stayed calm.
“I did not even know you existed.”
Adrian fired.
Sofia screamed.
Dante moved.
The bullet struck his side.
He fell.
“DANTE!”
Sofia ran.
Adrian aimed again.
Sofia grabbed Dante’s gun from the floor.
Raised it.
Her hands shook.
Adrian stared at her.
“You won’t.”
Sofia looked at Dante.
Blood spreading across his shirt.
Then at Adrian.
“You never knew me.”
She fired.
The bullet struck Adrian’s shoulder.
He stumbled.
Sofia kept the gun raised.
Her entire body trembled.
“Drop it.”
Adrian stared.
“Sofia.”
“Drop the gun.”
“You belong with me.”
“No.”
“You were made—”
“Drop it.”
Her voice became steady.
Adrian looked at Dante.
Then back at her.
He raised the weapon.
Dante shouted, “Sofia!”
She fired again.
Adrian fell.
His gun slid across the floor.
Silence.
Sofia dropped beside Dante.
“Look at me.”
“I’m fine.”
She stared at the blood.
“You are not fine.”
“Mostly fine.”
“Dante.”
He almost smiled.
“Now you sound like me.”
She pressed both hands against the wound.
“Shut up.”
He hissed.
“Romantic.”
“Shut up.”
Adrian groaned several feet away.
Alive.
Elena reached his weapon first.
Carlo secured his hands.
Sofia looked at Dante.
“Stay with me.”
“I’m here.”
“No dramatic dying.”
“I wasn’t planning—”
“Promise.”
His expression softened.
“I promise.”
She laughed through tears.
Dante touched her face.
“You shot my brother.”
“He shot you first.”
“Fair.”
“That is your reaction?”
“I’m proud.”
“Do not be proud.”
“Too late.”
She kissed him.
Briefly.
Desperately.
Then the vault system chimed.
Everyone looked up.
**M-01 CLAIM TERMINATED**
Another line appeared.
**MORETTI SUCCESSION DISPUTE RESOLVED**
Then:
**M-04 RECOGNIZED AS SOLE ACTIVE MORETTI AUTHORITY**
Dante stared.
Adrian laughed weakly from the floor.
“You win.”
Dante looked at him.
“No.”
He took Sofia’s hand.
“I stopped playing.”
Silence.
The vault doors unlocked.
Luca burst in seconds later with armed men behind him.
“Boss.”
His eyes went to Dante’s wound.
“Of course.”
Dante looked offended.
“What does that mean?”
“It means I leave you alone for ten minutes and you get shot.”
Sofia laughed despite herself.
Then she saw Matteo in the hallway behind him.
Safe.
Holding Bruno the bear.
“Mama!”
Sofia ran.
She lifted him.
Held him.
Breathed him in.
Dante struggled upright.
Matteo saw the blood.
“Dante hurt?”
Sofia’s throat tightened.
“Yes.”
Dante crouched despite Luca trying to stop him.
“I’m okay.”
Matteo touched his face.
“Promise?”
Dante smiled.
“I promise.”
Matteo wrapped his arms around Dante’s neck.
Dante closed his eyes.
Sofia watched.
Family.
Not bloodline.
Not designation.
Choice.
Antonio had been right.
Behind them, Adrian watched.
For the first time, there was no arrogance in his expression.
Only emptiness.
He had spent his life fighting to reclaim a family.
And never understood how one was actually built.
Sofia looked at the archive.
Then at Dante.
“This isn’t over.”
“No.”
“The Circle still exists.”
“Yes.”
“The external node.”
“Yes.”
“My mother.”
Elena raised an eyebrow from across the room.
Sofia corrected herself.
“That conversation.”
“Definitely.”
Carlo looked down.
“And him.”
Dante followed her gaze.
“Yes.”
Sofia exhaled.
Then looked at Matteo.
“But tonight?”
Dante wrapped one arm carefully around her waist.
“Tonight we leave.”
“No more bunkers?”
“Hopefully.”
“No secret societies?”
“Unlikely.”
“No explosions?”
“I can try.”
She smiled.
“Terrible reassurance.”
He looked at her.
“You still love me?”
“Unfortunately.”
Dante smiled.
A real one.
Rare.
Beautiful.
“Good.”
Sofia leaned against him.
Behind them, the archive lights slowly dimmed.
Ahead waited war, truth, consequences, and one final choice.
The Circle had spent years trying to decide who Dante, Sofia, and Matteo were meant to become.
Now there was only one thing left to do.
End it.
