Chapter 20 Peace Charm
Leaving aside Mark's complicated feelings after finding out that Kendall was the same person being mocked online for days, Kendall was in a great mood after completing her second mission.
She walked out of the police station with a spring in her step and asked the system to pull up the screen. She saw that her life had increased from 2 days to 12 days.
The system's voice in her mind rang.
> [Host, you got a random reward lottery chance after completing this mission. Would you like to use it now?]
"Yes!" Kendall said without hesitation. The sooner, the better! The frying pan she got yesterday was very useful, and she still had it in her bag.
The familiar lottery wheel appeared in front of Kendall, and she reached out to press it. The pointer on the wheel started to spin rapidly, then slowly, until it finally landed on a small pink pouch.
> [Congratulations, Host! You have won a peace charm!]
The system's cheerful voice rang out.
A peace charm with a red string appeared in Kendall's hand.
Kendall looked down at the charm. Its jade was smooth and shiny, clearly a high-quality item.
The system explained the charm's purpose in her mind.
> [This is a blessed peace charm! It can protect the wearer from one major injury!]
Kendall's eyebrows went up. 'Isn't this like a second chance at life?'
Although she hadn't been hurt by either of the criminals she had caught, you can't always expect to be so lucky. Kendall was just a human. She would encounter all kinds of criminals in the future, and she couldn't guarantee that she would be as lucky as she had been these last two times.
Now that she had this peace charm, she felt a lot more confident. Her luck was great on both of her lottery draws.
Kendall estimated the length of the string and tied the charm around her neck. Something that could save her life had to be worn at all times!
The system also seemed happy that Kendall had won the peace charm and asked in a cute voice.
> [Host, where should we go next?]
"To look for a place to live," Kendall said, standing on the side of the road. She found a taxi in no time. Thinking that she might be a regular at the police station from now on, Kendall asked the driver to take her to the nearest real estate agency.
She hadn't forgotten that her main goal was to find a place to rent.
The driver was fast and steady, and they arrived at the real estate agency in no time. Since Kendall would be living alone, her requirements weren't high. She only had two requests, a good environment and good privacy.
The agent quickly introduced her to several places that met Kendall's requirements. Kendall looked at the photos and picked out three places.
After picking the photos, the agent took Kendall to see the places in person. Kendall was a decisive person, and more importantly, she was rich.
When Kendall was on her own, she was taken in by a grumpy, reclusive old man.
All her fighting skills and other abilities were taught by him.
After he died, a lawyer contacted Kendall. The old man had left a will, stating that all of his assets were to be inherited by Kendall.
It was only after the old man's death that Kendall found out that this simple-looking old man, who could knock out a bull with a single punch, was actually very rich.
You could say that even before she was an adult, Kendall was already very wealthy. However, she didn't like to show it off, so she had never told anyone, including the Hansen family.
When she saw the second apartment, she decided to rent it. She signed the contract and paid. The apartment was already clean, and she could move in anytime. Kendall went back to her hotel to get her luggage, checked out, and went to her new home. The entire process only took half a morning.
After unpacking her luggage, Kendall finally had some free time. She comfortably lay down on the sofa, thinking about how both of her identities were trending. She opened TikTok.
Her account was as busy as ever, but Kendall ignored it for now and opened the trending page, where the number one topic was #OrapolisPoliceDepartmentReplies.
Kendall looked at the topic and tapped on it. The first result was a post from the official Orapolis Police Department TikTok account from two hours ago. After reading the content, Kendall nodded in satisfaction. Mark had perfectly relayed her words and intention.
The post had been up for only two hours but already had 360,000 likes and over 120,000 comments.
Kendall opened the comment section and saw that the atmosphere was very harmonious. More than half of the netizens were praising her for her bravery and kindness. The rest of them were still hoping she would show herself and reply.
user @AnonymousPlayer: "See, truly noble people don't ask for anything. She is the embodiment of nobility, taking action without any need for praise or benefits in return. Not weighing pros and cons or being rational, just doing what's right!"
user @UnbendingBamboo: "Her body may be thin and frail, but her back will always shine brightly in my heart."
user @JiJi: "Wahh, I'm so emotional. Why did she refuse? She has cancer. From the photos, you can see she's wearing a patient wristband. She's clearly sick, yet she went up alone and subdued the criminal. No matter how many times I watch it, I want to cry."
user @JoJo: "Ahhh, I really hope she opens a TikTok or an Instagram account. Live-streaming or posting updates would be great. I'll be the first to give her a gift! Not for anything else, I just want to know that she's okay."
user @EveningFalls: "Me too! Me too! I want to follow her. Not for anything else, just to know she's alive."
user @ManyStars: "@OrapolisPoliceDepartment, are you really not going to let the young lady show her face?!"
Looking at these comments, you could feel the love and concern that the netizens had for Kendall. This kind of positive atmosphere was something Kendall's own account had never seen.
She went to the police department's account and saw that besides the post from two hours ago, they had also posted another announcement.
The announcement was a report to the public, stating that the main culprit of the June 25, 2003, home invasion and robbery case, who had been on the run for years, had been reported and arrested by the police this morning.
Many young people online probably hadn't heard of the robbery case from twenty years ago, but with how advanced the internet was, it only took one page to find out the whole story. Twenty years later, the reason the netizens were shocked was the same as the reaction from years ago.
user @UnknownPlayer: "Golden bars!!! Ahhh, are they the golden bars I'm thinking of?"
user @TrulySick: "What else could they be? If you don't understand, I can translate it for you on the spot. Golden bars = gold bars."
user @SleepyCat: "Holy moly! A total of sixteen golden bars, tens of thousands of dollars in cash, and some expensive jewellery. The reward was 20,000 dollars! And that was twenty years ago!!! I'm not going to say who's jealous..."
user @CutieCute: "A home invasion from twenty years ago. The fugitive didn't sell the golden bars for all these years?"
user @July19: "You're probably young. You don't know how big of a sensation this case was back then.
The TV news and newspapers reported on it for a whole month.
Just because of that 20,000-dollar reward, anyone who watched TV or read the newspaper would have known what those custom golden bars looked like.
In that case, the moment the golden bars appeared, they would be reported in the next second. "
With the popularity of previous criminal capture case involving Kendall, the topic #FugitiveArrestedAfterTwentyYears quickly became a top trending topic.
