Chapter 5 Acceptance
The room fell silent after Vedha finished speaking.
Everyone's attention shifted toward Aadhira.
Waiting.
Watching.
Expecting.
Some expected anger.
Some expected tears.
Some expected an argument.
After all, they were asking her to marry a man she had never met.
A man who had originally been chosen for Vedha.
Surely she would object.
Surely she would question them.
Surely she would refuse.
Instead-
"Okay."
The single word echoed through the room.
"I'll marry him."
For a moment, nobody reacted.
The answer was so unexpected that everyone simply stared at her.
Even Vedha looked surprised.
She had prepared herself for arguments.
For accusations.
For resistance.
Not for agreement.
Harshvardhan frowned slightly.
The old Aadhira would have protested immediately.
She would have demanded explanations.
She would have argued until she got her way.
This Aadhira simply accepted.
As if the decision didn't matter.
As if her future didn't matter.
And somehow that bothered him.
The daughters-in-law exchanged glances.
They had heard stories about Aadhira for years.
The selfish girl.
The jealous cousin.
The girl who had destroyed her own family.
That was the image painted before them.
But the woman sitting in front of them didn't resemble that image at all.
A criminal would have defended herself.
A selfish person would have protested.
Yet Aadhira accepted being asked to marry a stranger without a single complaint.
Without even asking for a reason.
Ananya frowned slightly.
For the first time, she wondered if there was more to the story than what they had been told.
Beside her, nithya felt the same unease.
Aadhira looked neither guilty nor angry.
She looked...
Tired.
As though she had stopped expecting anything from this family long ago.
The thought unsettled both women.
Because for the first time since entering the Devraj family...
They found themselves questioning a story they had always accepted as truth.
Meera lowered her eyes.
Her chest tightened painfully.
Seven years ago, her daughter would have come running to her.
Would have complained.
Would have begged her to stop the marriage.
Now she simply accepted it.
Without emotion.
Without hesitation.
Meera didn't know why that hurt so much.
But it did.
Beside her, Rajeev felt the same.
For the first time, he realized something.
Throughout the entire conversation...
Aadhira had not once called him Papa.
Not once.
The realization left an unpleasant feeling in his chest.
Devayani's fingers tightened around her saree.
She had prayed every day for her granddaughter's return.
Yet now that Aadhira was standing before her...
She felt like a stranger.
The cheerful little girl she remembered was gone.
And Devayani couldn't help wondering whether the family had lost her forever.
Arvind and Kavitha exchanged guilty glances.
The proposal had originally come for Vedha.
Yet they had allowed the burden to be shifted onto Aadhira.
Neither of them felt proud of it.
But whenever they remembered Vedha lying unconscious in a hospital bed...
Their guilt toward Aadhira became mixed with resentment.
Raghav remained unusually quiet.
Even his sons seemed confused.
Aarav noticed how calmly Aadhira accepted everything.
Vivaan simply stared at her.
This wasn't the criminal everyone had described.
At least...
It didn't feel like it.
Finally, Harshvardhan spoke.
"The wedding will take place in three weeks."
Aadhira nodded.
"Understood."
Again.
No arguments.
No questions.
No emotions.
The family exchanged uncomfortable glances.
The conversation ended soon after.
One by one, everyone left the living room.
Until only Aadhira remained.
I quietly climbed the staircase.
Each step felt familiar.
Painfully familiar.
Eventually I stopped in front of a door.
My room.
The room I had left seven years ago.
Slowly, I pushed it open.
The sight made me freeze.
Nothing had changed.
The same curtains.
The same bookshelf.
The same photographs.
Even the stuffed toy sitting on my bed remained untouched.
As though someone had frozen time.
For seven years.
I walked toward the desk.
My fingers brushed against an old family photograph.
A younger version of me smiled back.
Standing between Nana and Nani.
Vedha beside me.
Everyone laughing.
Happy.
For a brief moment something painful twisted inside my chest.
Then I placed the frame back.
Carefully.
Because some memories were better left untouched.
My phone rang.
Shanaya.
I answered immediately.
"How bad was it?" she asked.
A small smile appeared on my lips.
Straight to the point.
"As expected."
"So nobody apologized?"
"No."
"No one welcomed you?"
"No."
She sighed dramatically.
"I really hate your family."
I walked toward the balcony.
Looking out at the gardens below.
"I don't."
The answer surprised even me.
After everything...
I still didn't hate them.
"Then what now?" Shanaya asked.
I stared at the mansion.
At the family who had once been my entire world.
"Now?"
My voice remained calm.
"Now we wait."
"For?"
"The right moment."
A dangerous silence followed.
Shanaya understood immediately.
"Should I prepare?"
"Yes."
The smile disappeared from my face.
"The game has finally begun."
Later that night.
The mansion was asleep.
The corridors were silent.
Moonlight filtered through my bedroom window.
My phone vibrated.
A message.
Unknown Number.
I frowned slightly.
Then opened it.
One sentence appeared on the screen.
My expression didn't change.
But for the first time that day...
My eyes softened.
Somewhere far away, another person was staring at a phone screen.
Waiting.
Watching.
Preparing.
And neither of them knew that very soon...
The lies buried seven years ago would begin to surface.
