Chapter 17 A Promise Kept
Friday morning arrived with a pleasant breeze sweeping across the gardens of Rathore Mansion.
Golden sunlight filtered through the tall windows, filling every corner of the mansion with warmth.
Unlike every other weekday...
Today felt different.
There was an unusual excitement in one corner of the house.
Inside his room...
Vivaan stood before the mirror, trying to straighten his school tie.
He frowned.
It looked worse.
He untied it.
Tried again.
It became even more crooked.
With an exaggerated sigh, he muttered,
"Why is this tie so difficult?"
A soft knock came from the half-open door.
"Bhabhi?"
Aadhira stood outside.
She had already finished getting ready for work. Today she wore a simple sky-blue cotton saree with a white pearl border. Her hair was neatly tied back, and as always, her appearance was elegant without being extravagant.
Vivaan immediately looked relieved.
"Please save me."
Aadhira walked inside.
"What happened?"
"This tie hates me."
She looked at the poor knot and smiled faintly.
"I think the feeling is mutual."
Vivaan laughed.
Within seconds...
Her fingers worked effortlessly.
The tie became perfect.
"There."
Vivaan looked into the mirror proudly.
"Much better."
Then he suddenly became serious.
"You'll come today, right?"
Aadhira looked at him.
"Did I ever break a promise?"
He shook his head immediately.
"No."
"Then why are you worried?"
He scratched the back of his neck.
"I don't know..."
"I just wanted to hear you say it."
Aadhira gently patted his head.
"I'll be there."
A bright smile spread across his face.
"Thank you, Bhabhi."
Just then...
Aarav appeared at the doorway.
"I've been looking everywhere for you."
Then he noticed Aadhira.
"Good morning, Bhabhi."
"Good morning."
Aarav looked at Vivaan's perfectly tied tie.
"So that's why you disappeared."
Vivaan grinned.
"My personal stylist."
Aadhira shook her head with amusement.
"Go downstairs."
"You'll both be late."
The brothers hurried out together.
As Aadhira watched them leave...
A tiny smile lingered on her lips.
Downstairs...
The dining table was already set.
Today's breakfast consisted of vegetable upma, masala dosa, coconut chutney, fresh fruits, and hot filter coffee.
The family gradually gathered.
Rajveer folded his newspaper.
Mahendra discussed a business call with Vikram.
Raghav was reminding Aarav about his college presentation.
Riya was scrolling through her phone.
Karan was trying to steal an extra dosa before everyone sat down.
Sunita caught him.
"Karan."
He froze.
"What?"
"Put it back."
"I was checking the quality."
"The servants already checked."
"I trust myself more."
Riya burst into laughter.
"You'll never grow up."
"I refuse."
The light-hearted banter filled the dining hall.
For the first time in many years...
Breakfast no longer felt completely formal.
As Aadhira entered carrying the last bowl of sambar, several eyes instinctively turned toward her.
She quietly placed it on the table.
Without seeking attention.
Without expecting appreciation.
Savitri noticed that habit again.
This girl always did things silently.
Vivaan sat beside Aadhira almost immediately.
"Bhabhi."
"Hmm?"
"You'll come before eleven, okay?"
"I have to."
"The family events begin at eleven-thirty."
"I remember."
"And don't forget..."
He lowered his voice dramatically.
"I signed your name in the attendance sheet."
Aadhira blinked.
"You did what?"
Vivaan looked guilty.
"Our class teacher asked who was coming."
"I wrote your name."
Aadhira couldn't help smiling.
"So now I have no choice."
"Nope."
Across the table...
Arjun quietly observed the exchange.
He had never seen Vivaan insist this much with anyone.
Not even with Raghav.
Yet around Aadhira...
The boy looked completely carefree.
After breakfast...
Everyone prepared to leave.
As usual...
Arjun picked up his car keys.
Before he reached the entrance...
Vivaan ran after him.
"Bhai!"
Arjun stopped.
"What happened?"
"You'll come too, right?"
Arjun hesitated.
"I have meetings."
Vivaan's face fell.
"But..."
Before he could continue...
Aadhira spoke softly.
"It's okay."
Vivaan turned toward her.
"Work is important."
"We'll attend for him."
Vivaan nodded slowly.
Although he looked disappointed...
He understood.
Arjun noticed it.
For a brief second...
Something tugged at his conscience.
As they walked outside...
He glanced toward Aadhira.
"What time does it start?"
"Eleven-thirty."
"My meeting ends around noon."
She nodded.
"I'll manage."
There was no complaint.
No expectation.
No disappointment.
She simply accepted his answer.
For some reason...
That made Arjun feel slightly uncomfortable.
Nearly two hours later...
Astra Global Headquarters.
Aadhira walked through the executive floor reviewing several documents while Priya followed beside her.
"Ma'am, the legal team has approved the merger papers."
"Schedule the signing for Monday."
"Yes, Ma'am."
"And the Dubai investors?"
"They've requested another meeting."
"Arrange it."
As they entered her office...
Kabir was already sitting on the sofa with his feet casually resting on the table.
Aadhira stopped walking.
"Kabir."
He smiled innocently.
"Good morning."
"Feet."
He looked down dramatically.
"Oh."
"I forgot tables have feelings."
Without another word...
He removed them.
Aadhira simply shook her head before taking her seat.
Shanaya entered carrying a folder.
"I knew he'd be here before me."
Kabir proudly nodded.
"I believe in punctuality."
"You've been here since eight."
"I was hungry."
Shanaya sighed.
"Of course you were."
For the first time that morning...
Aadhira laughed softly.
Kabir immediately pointed at her.
"There."
Shanaya smiled knowingly.
"What?"
Kabir grinned.
"That's her third smile this week."
Aadhira rolled her eyes.
"You two have too much free time."
"No."
Kabir replied confidently.
"We make free time."
The three friends shared another easy laugh.
Outside the glass walls of the office...
Several employees looked toward the cabin.
Their CEO...
Who was always calm and composed...
Looked genuinely relaxed around only two people.
Kabir and Shanaya.
Neither friendship needed explanations.
Neither friendship demanded anything.
It simply existed.
And that...
Was rare.
The laughter inside Aadhira's cabin slowly faded as everyone returned to work.
Shanaya opened the folder she had brought.
"The quarterly reports are ready."
Aadhira accepted the file.
"Any issues?"
Shanaya shook her head.
"The numbers exceeded our expectations."
Kabir leaned back on the sofa.
"I told you the Singapore expansion would work."
"You also said we'd celebrate before the deal was signed."
Kabir shrugged.
"Confidence."
"Or overconfidence."
"Same thing."
Aadhira looked up from the report.
"No."
"They're very different."
Kabir dramatically placed a hand over his heart.
"I've been insulted."
Shanaya smiled.
"You'll survive."
"I always do."
The room once again filled with easy laughter.
Suddenly...
Priya knocked on the door.
"Ma'am."
"Yes?"
"The board members are waiting for your signature."
"I'll be there."
As Priya left...
Aadhira checked the time.
10:05 AM.
She quietly closed the file.
"I'll be leaving before eleven."
Kabir frowned.
"Important meeting?"
"My brother-in-law's Family Day."
Kabir blinked.
"You mean..."
"Vivaan."
A smile unknowingly appeared on Aadhira's face.
"I promised him."
Kabir looked toward Shanaya.
"See?"
"I told you."
Shanaya raised an eyebrow.
"Told me what?"
"Kids love Aadhira."
"They always have."
Aadhira simply smiled before leaving the cabin.
Nearly forty-five minutes later...
Aadhira signed the final document.
"Reschedule my afternoon appointments."
The executives looked surprised.
"Ma'am?"
"I have a family commitment."
The senior director smiled warmly.
"We'll handle everything."
Aadhira nodded.
"Thank you."
As she left the boardroom...
Many employees silently watched her.
Despite being one of the country's youngest business leaders...
She never ignored personal promises.
It was one of the many reasons people admired her.
Meanwhile...
Rathore Group Headquarters.
Inside the conference room...
Arjun was presenting the company's upcoming expansion plan.
Several directors listened carefully.
"The final proposal will be submitted next week."
Everyone nodded.
Questions followed.
The discussion continued professionally.
Halfway through the meeting...
Arjun unconsciously glanced at his watch.
11:20.
He immediately returned his attention to the presentation.
But Siddharth, sitting across the table, noticed.
After the meeting ended...
The directors gradually left.
Only Siddharth remained.
He casually walked beside Arjun.
"You checked your watch three times."
"I did."
"That's unusual."
Arjun looked at him.
"So?"
"So..."
"What are you thinking about?"
"Nothing."
Siddharth smiled knowingly.
"You've become a terrible liar."
Arjun frowned.
"I don't lie."
"You avoid answers."
Without waiting for another response...
Siddharth walked away laughing.
Arjun looked at his watch again.
11:35.
Family Day had probably started.
For reasons he couldn't explain...
He wondered whether Vivaan had found Aadhira yet.
Green Valley International School...
The campus buzzed with excitement.
Children ran across the playground holding colorful balloons.
Parents chatted happily.
Teachers welcomed every family with warm smiles.
Near the entrance...
Vivaan stood on his toes, constantly looking toward the school gate.
His classmates noticed.
"What are you looking at?"
"My Bhabhi."
"Is she coming?"
"She promised."
Just then...
A black luxury sedan stopped outside.
The driver stepped out and opened the rear door.
Aadhira gracefully got out.
