Chapter 17 A Promise Kept #2
She wore a beautiful pastel green cotton saree with delicate floral embroidery.
Simple.
Elegant.
Graceful.
No heavy jewelry.
No unnecessary glamour.
Just effortless sophistication.
The moment Vivaan saw her...
His face lit up.
"Bhabhi!"
He ran toward her without caring who was watching.
Aadhira smiled warmly.
"There you are."
"I thought you were late."
She gently showed him her watch.
"I still have five minutes."
Vivaan laughed.
"I knew you'd come."
Without hesitation...
He held her hand.
"Come."
"I have to introduce you to everyone."
Nearby...
Several parents watched the interaction with smiles.
One teacher approached them.
"You must be Vivaan's sister-in-law."
Aadhira folded her hands politely.
"Good morning."
The teacher smiled.
"We've heard so much about you."
Aadhira looked at Vivaan.
"You have?"
Vivaan grinned proudly.
"I told everyone you make the best pancakes."
Aadhira couldn't help laughing.
"That's quite an introduction."
Another teacher joined them.
"So you're the famous Bhabhi."
Vivaan nodded enthusiastically.
"She's the best."
The teachers exchanged amused glances.
Children rarely spoke about adults with such genuine affection.
There had to be a reason.
Back at Rathore Mansion...
Rajveer was reading a book in the living room.
Savitri looked outside through the large window.
"He must be happy today."
Rajveer nodded.
"Vivaan?"
"Yes."
"I haven't seen him this excited in years."
After a brief silence...
Rajveer quietly spoke.
"That girl..."
Savitri looked toward him.
"Hmm?"
"She has changed something in this house."
Savitri smiled softly.
"Not everyone sees it yet."
Rajveer closed his book.
"They will."
Far away...
Neither of them knew...
Their words were slowly becoming true.
Children ran across the playground holding colorful balloons while teachers welcomed parents and guardians with warm smiles.
Vivaan held Aadhira's hand tightly, afraid she might disappear if he let go.
"Bhabhi!"
"Hmm?"
"You have to meet my friends first."
Aadhira smiled softly.
"Lead the way."
Vivaan proudly took her toward a group of children waiting under a large banyan tree.
"My friends..."
"This is my Bhabhi."
The children looked at Aadhira with curious eyes.
One little boy whispered loudly,
"She's prettier than my aunt."
The entire group burst into laughter.
Aadhira bent down to their height and smiled.
"Thank you."
A little girl wearing two ponytails tilted her head.
"Vivaan always talks about you."
Aadhira looked at him with surprise.
"Really?"
Vivaan scratched the back of his neck awkwardly.
"Maybe..."
Immediately, the children began exposing him.
"He says you make the best pancakes."
"He says you help him with homework."
"He says you're never angry."
"He says you're the nicest person in his house."
Vivaan covered his face in embarrassment.
"Bhabhi..."
"They're saying too much."
Aadhira couldn't help laughing.
"So..."
"You've been advertising me."
The children giggled while Vivaan groaned dramatically.
---
A whistle echoed across the playground.
"Attention everyone! The family games are about to begin!"
Teachers guided everyone toward the activity area.
The first event was a relay race.
Each child would run the first half before their parent or guardian completed the second half.
Vivaan looked nervous.
"What if we lose?"
Aadhira knelt beside him.
"Winning isn't important."
He frowned.
"Then what is?"
She smiled.
"Keeping the promise that we came here to enjoy today."
Vivaan nodded.
When the whistle blew, he ran with all his strength.
The moment he reached Aadhira, she gently took the ribbon and completed the remaining distance.
They finished among the first few teams.
Vivaan jumped happily.
"We did it!"
"We certainly did."
---
The next activity was a drawing competition.
The theme written on the board read:
'My Family, My Happiness.'
Vivaan stared at the blank sheet.
"What should I draw?"
Aadhira didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she asked,
"When you think of family... who comes to your mind?"
Vivaan smiled and picked up his crayons.
Slowly, he drew Rathore Mansion.
Then Rajveer.
Savitri.
Raghav.
Aarav.
Arjun.
Karan.
Riya.
And finally...
He drew himself standing beside Aadhira.
When he finished, he proudly showed her.
"See?"
Aadhira quietly looked at the drawing.
Her eyes softened.
"It's beautiful."
Nearby...
Raghav had just arrived after finishing some urgent work.
His eyes fell on Vivaan's drawing.
He froze.
His son...
Who had silently grown up missing a mother's warmth...
Had naturally placed Aadhira beside himself.
Not because someone asked him to.
Because that's where his heart believed she belonged.
A faint smile appeared on Raghav's face.
For the first time in years...
He felt his son was truly happy.
---
Just then...
Another luxury car entered the school premises.
Arjun stepped out.
His meeting had ended earlier than expected.
He looked around before spotting Vivaan and Aadhira near the activity area.
Without disturbing them, he quietly stood near the back.
A teacher approached him.
"You must be Mr. Arjun Rathore."
"Yes."
She smiled warmly.
"Your wife is wonderful."
Arjun looked slightly surprised.
"One of our students became frightened before her dance performance."
"Mrs. Rathore spent nearly fifteen minutes encouraging her."
"The child finally performed because of her."
Another teacher joined them.
"She has such a calming presence."
"Children usually open up only to people they truly trust."
Arjun looked toward Aadhira again.
She wasn't trying to impress anyone.
She simply helped whenever someone needed her.
---
Soon, the cultural performances began.
Parents and guardians filled the auditorium.
Vivaan stood backstage wearing his school costume.
Before his turn...
He suddenly ran back into the audience.
"Bhabhi!"
Aadhira looked up.
"What happened?"
"You'll clap loudly, okay?"
She smiled warmly.
"I'll clap the loudest."
Vivaan grinned before running back.
A few minutes later, he confidently performed on stage.
Throughout his performance...
His eyes repeatedly searched for one person.
Each time...
Aadhira smiled and applauded encouragingly.
His nervousness disappeared completely.
---
After all the performances ended...
The Principal walked onto the stage.
"Ladies and gentlemen..."
"Before we conclude today's Family Day..."
"I would like to appreciate one special guardian."
The audience became curious.
"Today we witnessed someone who reminded us that family is not measured only by blood..."
"But by love, patience and presence."
"Our appreciation goes to Mrs. Aadhira Rathore."
The auditorium filled with applause.
Aadhira looked genuinely surprised.
She walked onto the stage and accepted the small token of appreciation.
The Principal smiled.
"Would you like to say a few words?"
Aadhira looked at the audience before speaking softly.
"I don't think I did anything extraordinary."
"I simply kept a promise."
She looked toward Vivaan.
"Children don't remember expensive gifts."
"They remember who stood beside them."
"So if possible..."
"Never miss the moments that matter to them."
The entire auditorium became silent.
Then...
Another round of applause echoed through the hall.
---
At the back of the auditorium...
Rajveer and Savitri had quietly arrived.
Neither of them interrupted the event.
They simply watched.
Rajveer spoke softly.
"I judged her before knowing her."
Savitri smiled faintly.
"Perhaps..."
"It's time we learn who she really is."
Nearby...
Arjun's eyes never left Aadhira.
For the first time...
He wasn't looking at the woman everyone talked about.
He was looking at the woman he was slowly beginning to know.
---
Meanwhile...
At Devraj Mansion...
Meera received several photographs from one of her friends who had attended the event.
One picture showed Vivaan proudly holding Aadhira's hand.
Another showed children surrounding her.
A third captured her receiving the Principal's appreciation.
Meera stared at the pictures silently.
A painful smile appeared on her lips.
"She's smiling again..."
Devayani looked at the photographs.
"Yes..."
"But she learned to smile without us."
The room fell silent.
No one knew what to say.
Regret had become a permanent guest in the Devraj household.
---
Elsewhere...
Inside a luxury café...
Kavya stared at the same photographs on her phone.
Her expression darkened.
"So..."
"The Rathores are beginning to like her."
Her fingers tightened around the phone.
"If this continues..."
"Everything will slip out of my hands."
Just then, Vedha walked into the café.
Kavya looked up before forcing a smile.
"Perfect timing."
"I have a plan."
Vedha calmly took her seat.
Kavya leaned closer.
"It's time to remind Aadhira that she doesn't belong in the Rathore family."
Vedha remained silent for a few moments before giving a small nod.
"Do whatever you think is necessary."
A slow smile spread across Kavya's face.
She had no idea...
The game she believed she was controlling would one day destroy her instead.
