Chapter 44 - The Heart That Chose You #2

"Usually people become uncomfortable when they see someone crying."

"They either leave..."

"Or they ask questions you're too tired to answer."

"But he didn't."

"He respected my silence."

She looked down at her hands.

"After a long while..."

"He quietly took a clean handkerchief from his pocket..."

"...and held it out to me."

"I remember staring at it for several seconds."

"I didn't even realise someone could show kindness without expecting anything in return."

Arjun listened without interrupting.

Aadhira smiled gently.

"Before he left..."

"He looked at me..."

"...and said something."

Her eyes drifted toward the empty space beside the bench, as if she could still see that stranger sitting there.

"Those words..."

"They stayed with me."

"They gave me the strength..."

"...to wake up the next morning."

She fell silent.

The breeze carried the scent of fresh flowers through the park.

Arjun waited patiently.

He didn't ask what the words were.

He simply let her continue at her own pace.

Aadhira closed her eyes for a brief moment.

Almost as though she could still hear that voice after all these years.

When she opened them again...

There was both gratitude...

And longing.

"He said..."

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

?"I don't know what you're fighting, and you don't have to tell me."?

She smiled faintly.

?"Just promise yourself one thing..."?

?"When you wake up tomorrow, take one more step."?

?"Sometimes..."?

?"That's all life asks of us."?

Silence settled between them.

The words were simple.

Yet...

Somehow they carried a warmth that had survived seven long years.

Aadhira looked down at her hands.

"At that moment..."

"I didn't think those words would change anything."

"But the next morning..."

"I remembered them."

"So..."

"I got out of bed."

"I took one step."

"Then another."

"And another."

A tear quietly escaped the corner of her eye.

She wiped it away before it could fall.

"Slowly..."

"I met people who became my family."

"I found friends who stood beside me."

"I built a life."

"I became stronger."

She smiled sadly.

"But..."

"I never forgot the stranger who unknowingly saved me."

Arjun listened quietly.

There was something strangely beautiful about the story.

A stranger...

A few kind words...

A life changed forever.

After a long silence...

Aadhira finally turned towards him.

"I didn't tell you all this because I wanted your sympathy."

"And I certainly don't want your pity."

She took a slow breath.

"I told you because..."

"...you deserve to know that the woman you say you love..."

"...isn't as simple as she appears."

Her eyes lowered once again.

"I still haven't told you everything."

"And for now..."

"I can't."

"There are truths..."

"...I'm not ready to share."

She looked at him again.

"The Aadhira you know..."

"She's only one part of me."

"There are parts of myself..."

"...that I'm not proud of."

"Parts that changed because of everything I went through."

She gave a self-deprecating smile.

"I'm not as kind as you think."

"I can be stubborn."

"I can be selfish."

"And sometimes..."

"...I make decisions that hurt people."

She paused before finishing softly,

"So if one day..."

"...you discover those parts of me..."

"I'll understand if you regret today."

The breeze gently swayed the branches above them.

For a long moment...

Arjun simply looked at her.

There wasn't disappointment in his eyes.

Nor doubt.

Only unwavering certainty.

He slowly reached out.

This time...

Instead of speaking immediately...

He gently held her hand.

His thumb softly brushed across her knuckles.

"Aadhira..."

She looked at him.

"I meant every word I said."

"I don't know every chapter of your life."

"And maybe..."

"I won't understand every decision you've made."

"But that's alright."

A faint smile appeared on his lips.

"Because loving someone isn't about knowing every answer before choosing them."

"It's about choosing them..."

"...and having the courage to learn the rest together."

His eyes never left hers.

"So no..."

"I won't decide who you are because of your past."

"I'll decide after walking beside you."

"And from everything I've seen until now..."

"I'm proud of the woman standing in front of me."

His voice softened.

"If there are storms inside your heart..."

"You don't have to face them alone anymore."

"I know you don't completely believe me yet."

"And I'm not asking you to."

"I'll spend the rest of my life proving it instead."

Aadhira felt her vision blur.

Not because she was crying.

But because...

For the first time in years...

Someone wasn't asking her to explain herself.

Someone had simply chosen to stay.

She tightened her fingers around his hand.

A small, genuine smile appeared on her lips.

"Thank you..."

Arjun smiled back.

"You don't have to thank me."

They sat together in comfortable silence.

Neither hurried to leave.

Neither felt the need to speak.

The old bench...

The rustling leaves...

And the gentle afternoon breeze quietly surrounded them.

Aadhira's eyes slowly drifted toward the empty space beside the bench.

The very place where, seven years ago...

A stranger had sat beside a broken seventeen-year-old girl.

She smiled almost imperceptibly.

"I wonder..."

"...if he even remembers that day."

Arjun followed her gaze toward the empty spot.

Without knowing why...

A strange sense of familiarity stirred somewhere deep within him.

A memory...

Just beyond his reach.
