Chapter 45 - The Promise That Found Its Way Home.

The gentle breeze continued to sway the branches above them.

For a long moment...

Neither of them spoke.

Aadhira's gaze remained fixed on the empty space beside the old wooden bench.

A soft smile lingered on her lips.

"I wonder..."

"...if he even remembers that day."

Arjun followed her gaze.

His eyes rested on the vacant spot, as though expecting someone to appear there.

After a few moments, he spoke quietly.

"Did you ever find him?"

Aadhira smiled.

"Yes."

Arjun turned towards her.

"You did?"

She nodded.

"I found him."

A strange curiosity settled inside him.

"What happened?"

"Did you ever thank him?"

Aadhira slowly looked into his eyes.

There was gratitude in her expression.

Affection.

And a quiet certainty that had been waiting years to be spoken aloud.

"Yes..."

"I thanked him."

Arjun smiled.

"I'm glad."

"He deserved to know that he helped someone."

Aadhira's smile deepened ever so slightly.

"He never knew."

Arjun looked at her in confusion.

"What do you mean?"

She drew a slow breath.

"The person who changed my life..."

"...never realised he had."

Silence.

The wind whispered through the leaves overhead.

Then...

Very softly...

She said,

"Because..."

"...that person..."

"...is you."

Everything around Arjun seemed to fall silent.

His expression froze.

He stared at her.

Unable to speak.

"...Me?"

Aadhira nodded.

"You were the one sitting beside me."

"You were the one who handed me that handkerchief."

"You were the one who told me to take one more step tomorrow."

She smiled gently.

"You were the stranger who unknowingly saved me."

For several long seconds...

Arjun simply looked at her.

His mind refused to accept what he had just heard.

Then...

Fragments of forgotten memories slowly surfaced.

A younger version of himself.

A family vacation in London.

An evening walk through a quiet park.

An old wooden bench beneath a sprawling oak tree.

A girl sitting alone.

Her shoulders trembling.

Trying desperately not to cry.

He remembered stopping.

Not because he knew her.

But because something about her loneliness had touched his heart.

He remembered sitting beside her.

Saying nothing.

Waiting.

Respecting her silence.

Then reaching into his pocket.

A neatly folded white handkerchief.

And finally...

The words that had come to him without thinking.

"When you wake up tomorrow... take one more step."

His eyes widened.

He looked back at Aadhira.

"...That girl..."

"...was you?"

She gave a small nod.

"Yes."

"I never forgot your face."

"You probably don't remember mine."

"You only saw a frightened seventeen-year-old girl."

"But I remembered the young man who showed kindness without asking a single question."

Arjun let out a slow breath.

"I..."

He shook his head in disbelief.

"I completely forgot."

"I remembered coming to London with my family years ago."

"I remembered visiting this park."

"But..."

"I never imagined..."

He laughed softly, overwhelmed by the realization.

"I never knew that girl would become my wife."

Aadhira smiled.

"Neither did I."

They both fell silent.

The weight of coincidence...

Or perhaps fate...

Settled gently between them.

Arjun looked around the park once more.

The old bench.

The pond.

The winding paths.

Everything suddenly felt different.

He looked back at Aadhira.

"So all these years..."

"You remembered me?"

She lowered her eyes.

"I remembered the kindness."

"I remembered your voice."

"I remembered how, for the first time..."

"...someone expected nothing from me."

Her fingers lightly traced the weathered wood of the bench.

"When everyone I loved felt impossibly far away..."

"A stranger gave me enough hope to face another morning."

She smiled faintly.

"I don't think you could ever understand how much that meant to me."

Arjun looked at her with quiet emotion.

"I wish I had known."

Aadhira turned towards him.

"If you had..."

"You would've tried to help."

"And maybe..."

"I wouldn't have learned to stand on my own."

She paused before adding with a gentle smile,

"So perhaps..."

"...everything happened exactly the way it was meant to."

Arjun's eyes remained on her.

For the first time since they had married...

He understood why something about Aadhira had always felt strangely familiar.

It wasn't because they had met after the wedding.

It wasn't because they had slowly grown close.

Somewhere...

Deep within his memories...

His heart had recognised her long before his mind ever did.

The afternoon breeze drifted through the park once again.

Neither of them hurried to speak.

Some truths...

Needed a little silence before they could be fully understood.

The silence between them was no longer heavy.

It was filled with memories...

Memories that neither of them had ever imagined they shared.

Arjun looked at Aadhira with newfound wonder.

"So..."

"After all these years..."

"You remembered me..."

She smiled softly.

"Every single day."

His eyes widened slightly.

Aadhira looked down at her hands.

"I never knew your name."

"I didn't know where you lived."

"I didn't even know if I'd ever see you again."

She let out a quiet laugh.

"So eventually..."

"I stopped searching."

"But I never forgot."

"I couldn't."

"You were the first person who gave me hope..."

"...when I had completely lost it."

Her fingers intertwined nervously.

"There were days when I wondered who you were."

"What kind of life you had."

"Whether you were happy."

"And whether you still carried the same kindness in your heart."

Arjun listened quietly.

Every word settled deep within him.

Aadhira continued.

"Years passed."

"My life changed."

"I changed."

"I became busy."

"I met wonderful people."

"I built a career."

"But whenever life became difficult..."

"I remembered that evening."

"And somehow..."

"It reminded me to keep moving."

She smiled faintly.

"I suppose..."

"You became a beautiful memory that belonged only to me."

Arjun's heart warmed.

He had never imagined that one small act of kindness...

Done without a second thought...

Could remain in someone's heart for so many years.

After a long pause, he asked softly,

"Then..."

"When did you realise I was the same person?"

Aadhira looked at him.

"The day my family asked me to marry you."

Arjun blinked.

She nodded.

"I still remember it."

"I wasn't expecting anything."

"I thought it would simply be another arranged marriage proposal."

"But the moment I saw your face..."

"...time stopped."

A gentle smile spread across her lips.

"I recognised you immediately."

"The years had changed you."

"But your eyes..."

"I could never forget them."

Arjun remained speechless.

"I couldn't believe it."

"I kept asking myself..."

"'Is it really him?'"

"'Or am I imagining it?'"

She laughed softly.

"I looked at you far longer than I should have."

"And eventually..."

"I accepted something I had never expected."

"The stranger who once gave me hope..."

"...had returned to my life."

Arjun felt his heartbeat quicken.

"So..."

"You agreed to marry me because of that?"

Aadhira slowly nodded.

"Yes."

"It was still an arranged marriage."

"No a forced marriage. I accepted it because someone told me to trust their decision."

"But if the groom had been someone else..."

"I don't know what I would've done."

She looked into his eyes.

"But when I realised it was you..."

"Saying yes..."

"Didn't feel difficult anymore."

A warm silence settled between them.

Arjun couldn't hide the smile that slowly appeared on his face.

"You never told me."

Aadhira smiled knowingly.

"I wanted to."

"Many times."

"But every time..."

"I stopped myself."

He looked at her curiously.

"Why?"

She took a slow breath.

"Because I was afraid."

"Afraid that you wouldn't remember."

"Afraid that if I told you..."

"You'd only feel guilty."

"I didn't want gratitude."

"I didn't want sympathy."

"And I certainly didn't want you to believe you had to love me because of something that happened seven years ago."

Her voice softened.

"I wanted your feelings to belong to the woman I had become..."

"...not the broken girl you met on this bench."

She smiled gently.

"So I chose silence."

"I told myself..."

"If fate truly wanted you to remember..."

"It would happen on its own."

She looked around the quiet park.

"And today..."

"It finally did."

Arjun lowered his head for a moment, smiling to himself.

Then he looked back at her.

A quiet laugh escaped him.

"You know..."

"I've spent weeks wondering how to make my wife fall in love with me."

"I confessed."

"I worried."

"I overthought every little moment."

He shook his head with an amused smile.

"And all this time..."

"The woman sitting beside me had already carried a place for me in her heart."

Aadhira's cheeks warmed.

"It wasn't exactly like that."

"I admired the stranger."

"I was grateful to him."

"And somewhere along the way..."

"Without even realising it..."

"My heart held on to that memory."

She met his eyes.

"But..."

"I truly fell in love with you..."

"After I met you again."

"After our marriage."

"After seeing the man you'd become."

Her smile grew softer.

"The memory made me trust you."

"But it was you..."

"The Arjun sitting beside me today..."

"Who made me fall in love."

Their eyes remained locked.

Neither of them noticed the afternoon sun slowly dipping lower beyond the trees.

For the first time...

Everything they had kept hidden from each other...

Was finally finding its way into the light.

The golden light of the afternoon quietly settled across the park.

Arjun simply looked at Aadhira.

Then...

He said " do you knew"

He chuckled softly.

"I kept wondering if I was moving too fast."

"If I was saying too much."

"If I was making you uncomfortable."

"I even worried that my confession yesterday might have been too sudden."

He looked into her eyes.

"And all this time..."

"...you had already carried a piece of me in your heart."

Aadhira lowered her gaze shyly.

"It wasn't exactly like that..."

Arjun smiled.

"Maybe not."

"But knowing that someone remembered me for seven years..."

"...without me even knowing..."

He paused, emotion evident in his voice.

"I don't think you realise how happy you've made me today."

Aadhira felt her heart tighten.

She had expected surprise.

Questions.

Perhaps even disbelief.

Instead...

All she saw was happiness.

Pure, heartfelt happiness.

Arjun gently took both of her hands in his.

His expression grew calm.

"Aadhira..."

" I have already said it earlier still i am saying it once more.."

"You don't have to force yourself to trust me overnight."

She slowly looked up.

"I know life hasn't been kind to you."

"I know trust isn't something that appears just because someone asks for it."

"It takes time."

"And that's alright."

His thumb gently brushed over her fingers.

"I can wait."

His voice was steady.

Certain.

"I'm not asking you to believe every promise I make today."

"I'll prove them."

"One day at a time."

"One moment at a time."

He smiled gently.

"If it takes weeks..."

"I'll wait."

"If it takes months..."

"I'll wait."

"If it takes years..."

"I'll still be here."

"Because I'm not planning to walk away."

"I'm planning to walk beside you."

Aadhira felt tears gathering in her eyes.

Not because she was sad.

But because...

For the first time...

Someone wasn't asking her to hurry.

Someone wasn't asking her to change.

Someone was simply willing...

To stay.

Arjun continued softly,

"I don't want you to force your heart to believe me."

"I'll keep showing you..."

"Again and again..."

"...that you're never alone anymore."

A tear slipped down Aadhira's cheek.

She smiled through it.

"I don't know what tomorrow will bring."

"I don't know how long it'll take me to leave all my fears behind."

She took a slow breath.

"But..."

She tightened her fingers around his hands.

"I don't want to keep running anymore."

Her eyes met his.

"If you're willing to wait for me..."

"...then I'm willing to walk towards you."

A smile brighter than the afternoon sun spread across Arjun's face.

"You don't know how long I've been waiting to hear that."

Aadhira laughed softly through her tears.

"Then..."

"Let's not try to become the perfect couple."

Arjun nodded.

"We'll become ourselves."

"Slowly."

She smiled.

"One conversation at a time."

"One promise at a time."

"One step at a time."

He squeezed her hand gently.

"Together."

The breeze danced through the leaves above them once more.

The old wooden bench remained exactly where it had always been.

Seven years ago...

It had witnessed a broken girl meeting a kind stranger.

Today...

It witnessed two hearts choosing each other.

Not because fate had written their story.

But because they had decided to write the rest of it together.

Hand in hand.

Step by step.
