Chapter Twenty-Nine The Shape of Secrets
"We are all broken, that's how the light gets in."
The heat between them hummed, not like fire but like something deeper—smoke curling around old scars and fresh wounds.
"Adan," he whispered into her mouth, her name like a vow.
The kiss was tentative at first, Nox brushed his lips against Adan's and then it quickly turned fierce—raw.
Filled with everything they didn't say. His hands were in her hair, sliding to her jaw, anchoring her to him.
The kiss wasn't neat. It wasn't soft. It was trembling and desperate, a collision of pain and hope.
Adan gripped the front of his shirt, fingers curling tight, like if she let go he'd disappear again. For a moment, the surrounding cell vanished. There were no bars. No collars. Only them.
Breathing. Burning--Alive.
Nox's fingers moved with reverence, brushing his knuckles against the side of her head.
He broke the kiss to carefully pull the pins from her hair free.
It tumbled in waves, first over her shoulders, then cascading down her back like smoke slipping from a fire.
Nox's eyes followed every movement, his chest rising slow with each breath.
He let his fingers trail through the freed strands, as if memorizing the feel of them.
"I love when you wear your hair down." he murmured, voice barely more than a breath.
Adan's lips parted, a shiver racing down her spine. "It's a mess right now." Her hand nervously went to her head, before dropping to her side. She didn't want to think about what she looked like right now. "The curls are from my mother's side, but the colour is all Feuer."
"And the eyes?" Nox smiled, slow and soft.
Adan dropped her head back to look up at him. "All mine."
There's reverence in his gaze, like he was memorizing every line of her face.
His green eyes linger on her not just with desire, but with something deeper—aching, raw, and unflinching.
His hands moved to cradle her neck as she gazed up at him, like his presence was both temptation, and her salvation.
"What do you want, love?" his voice dark, low, barely a growl.
Her breath caught in her throat at the question. Adan's lips parted, but no words came at first. She was too lost in the weight of his gaze, the heat of his palms at her throat, thumbs brushing gently against her jaw.
"I want you," she whispered finally, the confession barely audible, but soaked in truth.
Nox's eyes darkened, a flicker of something primal flashing in the emerald depths.
Adan lifted her hands, sliding her fingers into his hair, tugging gently until his forehead touched hers.
His eyes closed at her touch, "say it again, but If you say it again I won't stop. Gods, Adan. Say it again and I will drop to my fucking knees for you." He breathed the words into her, if she lifted her chin the smallest inch, their lips would touch again.
"I want you, Lennox." Her mouth parted, and something shattered behind his eyes—something hollow and haunted—and when he kissed her, it wasn't the kiss of a man trying to claim her.
It was the kiss of a man grateful he still could.
His mouth moved over hers with a tenderness that defied the violence of the life they lived, the war still raging just beyond the cell walls. There was desperation there, yes, but not the kind that clawed or took. This was reverent, aching, careful.
Adan melted into him, her fingers tightening in his hair as the world beyond the cell blurred.
There was just him. And her.
A tear fell down Adan's cheek, not because of the cage or the Dreadmore's, or the arena waiting for them. Despite all that, while she was in Nox's arms she never felt safer--happier. Her fingers in his hair tightened, and she opened her mouth to him.
Their tongues raged and danced and they only broke apart in a furry up ripping fabric.
Adan's shirt was the first to go. Nox growled into her neck while ripping at the top. His eyes narrowed in on the brand just below her collar bone, rage ripping at his green irises. Adan placed her small hand on his cheek, lifting his chin just enough to look at her face, and not the brand.
His fierce eyes instantly softened. His breath was uneven, brushing over her lips as he whispered, "I'm going to kill him."
Both her hands cupped his face, "Nox... it's just us." She didn't want to talk anymore. Not about kings or rebellions--none of it.
All she wanted right now as him.
His thumb traced the line of her cheekbone, the edge of her jaw and down her neck.
Her hands moved from his face to pull his shirt free. He had to move back, lifting his arms over his head to help her.
They both fell into each other in a fury of desperate limbs, crashing into the sand floor together. Nox cradled Adan's neck and the back of her head to stop it from slamming against the floor as he landed on top of her--bracing his weight.
His body warm and solid, every line of him trembling with restraint.
Despite the fury that still flickered in his eyes, his touch remained reverent.
Gentle. His hand curled protectively behind her head, keeping her from the coarse sand as his mouth met hers again, slower this time.
Deeper. Like he needed to savour her—memorize her.
Her fingers traced the hard lines of his back, his shoulders, the scars she knew like constellations. He shuddered beneath her touch, a low, broken sound rumbling from his chest as though her hands were the only thing tethering him to this reality.
Sand clung to their skin, the cold of the dungeon floor seeping in, but none of it mattered. Not with his weight braced over her, his body curled around hers like a shield against the world.
Her hand reached for the band at his waist, and his hand on her wrist stopped her. His grip on her wasn't tight, but it was firm—unshaken in the way he held her there, like it wasn't just about stopping her hand but grounding himself.
Her mis-matched eyes flicked to him in question, with one raised dark brow. His eyes searched hers, stormy green and wild, but the edges of him were frayed. Raw. His thumb brushed across her pulse, where her heartbeat thundered under her skin, and he swallowed hard.
"You don't have too... not like this," he said, voice rough as gravel, like the words were clawing their way out of his throat. "Not because we're scared, or trapped, or trying to forget."
Adan stared up at him, her chest rising and falling against his. She could feel his heartbeat through the sliver of space left between them—rapid, brutal, real.
"Nox," she whispered, the word falling like a prayer from her lips. Her free hand moved to his face again, cradling it as her thumb traced the hollow beneath his eye. "I'm not trying to forget. I'm trying to feel."
His jaw clenched, a flash of pain and reverence sweeping through his expression. He turned his face into her palm and kissed it, slow and aching.
"I just need to be yours," she breathed. "Here. Now."
He looked at her like she was the only light left in a dark world—like he couldn't believe she was still here. "You are mine." Nox loosened his grip on her wrist, his fingers sliding down to lace with hers. He whispered, reverent and ruined. "You've been mine since the moment I saw you."
His lips crashed with hers, pinning her hands down above her head.
Their fingers twined together like a pact sealed in silence, bodies close, breath shared in the quiet between heartbeats.
The kiss was deep. A claiming, just as much as it was surrender.
Nox answered her with a groan that shuddered against her mouth.
Her name spilled from his lips like a vow as he kissed a path down her neck, his mouth lingering over the brand just below her collarbone. He paused there, his breath trembling, the rage he'd barely buried rising again—but this time, it didn't consume him.
Instead, he kissed the brand.
Soft. Gentle. As if he could rewrite the pain Darius left behind.
Adan's eyes filled with tears—not of hurt, but of something quieter, more devastating. Of being seen. Loved. Despite it. Because of it.
Because Nox had always seen all of her. Even now--Especially now.
His hand moved with purpose. Worshipful. As though he were learning her anew after lifetimes apart. Slipping past the band at her waist, her head flew back as his deft fingers parted her middle. He moaned when he found her slick and soaked for him.
"Fuck." He murmured into her skin like a prayer.
Her breath caught as one of his fingers slipped snuggly inside her, she was panting by the time his thumb pressed down on her bed of nerves.
Their breaths synced in the silence, soft gasps and murmurs filling the cold cell, replacing the echoes of violence with something sacred. Nox moved inside her with reverence, as if every thrust was an apology for the pain she'd endured, every touch a promise that she would never be alone again.
Adan's hands clung to him—fingers digging into his shoulders, his back, anchoring herself to him like he was the only thing keeping her grounded. She peppered kissed down his neck while he played her softly, and for the first time in days—maybe years—she felt whole.
He slowed, lifting his head to look at her. His pupils blown wide, lashes wet, jaw clenched tight against the emotion that threatened to break him. He kissed the tip of her nose, her cheeks, her jaw—tiny, wordless devotions.
He added another finger, pumping into her. "I've got you," he murmured, barely louder than the sound of their skin brushing together.
She nodded, her nails raking through his hair, the rhythm between them growing deeper, more intense—until the moment crested, pleasure crashing through her in waves, sharp and bright. He kissed her mouth again, claiming her scream.
She was panting and boneless when Nox pulled his fingers from her, and leaned back on his heels.
Adan watched as he took those two dripping fingers and popped them into his mouth. All colour in her eyes disappeared into blackness as her pupils blew wide.
