CHAPTER TWENTY-FIVE
Blair
Then
I stared down at the stick I’d peed on a few short minutes ago. I couldn’t believe this. I was pregnant again. Even when I was angry at him, Scott and I had trouble keeping our hands off each other. I hadn’t slept with him in a few weeks, but apparently one of those times had created a new life.
I wasn’t sad about the baby, just the timing.
Right as I was ready to file for divorce and move on with my life, a pregnancy was going to be…
difficult to manage. Along with four children and a growing cookie business.
And then there was the insurance. If I divorced Scott, would I still be covered?
Having a baby with no insurance is astronomically expensive.
“Oh God.” I squeezed my eyes shut, trying to hold back the tears. I was done crying over Scott Hastings. These tears were for me and my children.
I couldn’t imagine the conversation I needed to have with Scott going well. He wasn’t handling my leaving him well at all. He’d fallen apart to a point that had surprised me. It wasn’t like him at all.
My phone buzzed, and I sighed when I saw Scott’s name on the screen. Great. Just what I needed right now. I bit my lip and sent him to voicemail. I couldn’t handle another long phone conversation with him.
He texted immediately.
Scott: I’m not trying to bother you. I just want to know if I could come over tonight so we could talk. Maybe Gam could keep the kids?
I knew I needed to talk with him about the pregnancy, but I wasn’t ready yet.
Blair: Not a good time.
Scott: Please. There’s something going on that I want you to hear from me first.
My heart sank, and I was surprised by the level of pain I felt.
Now that he knew I’d really left his ass, he probably wanted a quickie divorce so he could marry Scarlett.
I snorted. What if she was pregnant? We’d have babies at the same time.
Jesus, that would be horrible. There weren’t many gynecologists around—I’d hate to have to watch Scott sitting with Scarlett in the waiting room…
Scott: Blair?
Blair: I think I can probably connect the dots without you telling me you and Scarlett are dating.
Scott: It’s not that. Please let me come over. It’s important.
Blair: Fine. I’m not cooking.
Scott: I didn’t expect you to. I’ll pick something up. Is six okay?
My eyebrows shot up. Scott used to stop and pick up dinner once or twice a week, but he hadn’t done anything like that in a long time. He always said a home cooked meal was much healthier than even the nicest takeout. It was probably because he was eating tons of restaurant food with Scarlett.
I gave him a thumbs up and tried not to wonder what it was he had to tell me.
And I had to decide if I was going to tell him about the pregnancy tonight.
