A Kingdom Under Attack

Roman's pov

The atmosphere inside Henry's office was heavy with tension.

A large map of the surrounding territories was spread across the table. Henry stood beside me with a grim look.

"They aren't just attacking my pack anymore but every pack in the north,"

He said.

Last night I received a call from the Twilight pack, their pack was attacked by vampires and then this morning I received another call from the Moonlight pack there pack had also been attacked.

" It's getting out of hand," Henry's beta spoke. "Nicholas has to be stopped."

"He will," I muttered, clenching my fist. "And when I get my hands on that bastard I will make sure he has a painful death."

"We need to know which pack is his next target," Henry said.

I leaned forward on the table, tilting my head to one side as I peered over at Henry.

"How will we find out?"

"A Witch," he replied.

I shook my head.

"Witches cannot be trusted."

Before anyone of them could reply my phone started to buzz in my pocket.

My stomach dropped. I hope this wasn't bad news because people normally call me when something wasn't right.

I pulled it out and frowned as I glanced at the screen.

No definitely not good. Kael would only call me unless it was something important and my gut told me it was something bad.

I answered immediately.

"Kael what's going on?"

Kael's breathing was uneven.

"Alpha..."

My chest tightened.

"Our pack was attacked this morning."

Fuck! I knew it.

"Our pack was attacked by rogues.

We lost several warriors."

I closed my eyes briefly.

Another fucking attack. This was getting out of control.

"Darius and a few others are patrolling the borders as we speak just to make sure none are hiding nearby."

"And what about the woman and children? Where they harmed?"

"No."

A small wave of relief washed through me.

Thank moon goddess they weren't harmed.

I stared at the map on Henry's desk.

This was exactly what I feared. The attacks were spreading fast. As the king of the Lycans I needed to sort this problem out as soon as possible and I needed to return home. My pack needed me there's only so much Kael can do.

"I'll return this afternoon and we'll talk."

"Alright," he replied and ended the call.

For several moments, I simply stood there, gripping the phone tightly.

I had no idea how I was going to sort this mess out but I knew I had too. Perhaps Henry's right about seeking help from a witch. She could help us track down Nicholas.

When I lifted my head I saw Henry observing me.

"Bad news?"

I slipped the phone back into my pocket.

"My pack was attacked this morning."

His face hardened.

"We lost several warriors."

"Rogues or vampires?" He asked.

I exhaled, running a hand through my hair. "Rogues."

"I'm afraid I'll have to leave today. I know I promised to help you but as you can see my pack also needs me."

"I understand, Alpha."

I gave him a brief nod.

"I need to find my mate and inform her," I said as I turned to leave but Henry's voice stopped me.

"Wait," he murmured.

I raised a brow. "What is it?"

He sighed. "Could you please not discuss this with Olivia. I mean she already has been through enough and I don't want to add more stress on her."

"Of course."

Without another word, I turned and left the office.

Aurora's pov

I was laying down on the bed, staring at the ceiling. I don't know what's going on with me since this morning I've been feeling sick. My body feels like it's on fire and my skin is pale and calmy.

I've taken three cold showers and nothing seemed to help ease the fever down. Maybe I should go to Olivia and ask her to take me to the Packs healer.

Just as I climbed out of bed, the door flew open and Roman entered looking more worried than he already was, it made my chest tighten.

He looked exhausted and worn out.

Dark circles bruised the skin beneath his eyes, his face looked pale and drawn, his hair was messy, as if he hadn't had the chance to brush it.

For these past couple of days he'd been stressing about the attacks that has been happening lately and Eversince then he's hardly slept or ate properly.

I moved toward him, wrapping my arm around his waist.

We hardly spent time together or spoke, every night he's been out, either patrolling the borders or in a meeting with the others. I know we didn't come here to relax but this distance between us has been taking a toll on me.

Roman's arms tightened around me, his face settled in the crook of my neck.

"I've missed you," he whispered.

I smiled. "I missed you too."

For a few moments we stood like that, wrapped up in each other's embrace until he pulled away, frowning at me.

"Your scent," he said staring down at me. "It's changed."

My brows arched. "What do you mean?"

"It's slightly sweeter and stronger. It's making my beast go wild."

I shrugged. "Maybe it's the stress."

"What are you stressing about?" he asked.

"Everything," I murmured. "Us, Scarlett, the attacks and my future. I'm not sure where I stand."

He sighed, cupping my face. "I already told you didn't I?" he said, his voice firm but low.

"Aurora you're the only woman I want and as for Scarlett I don't want to have anything to do with her and as for the attacks," he paused, exhaling deeply.

"Roman?"

"Our pack, it was attacked this morning."

I gasped, my eyes widened.

"Is everyone alright? Is Kiera, Darius and Kael and the others fine?" I asked, my voice sounding frantic.

He nodded.

"They are but we've lost a few warriors."

"Oh god! That's terrible."

He drew away from me, running a hand threw his hair.

"We're returning to the pack this afternoon."

I nodded. "I'll go inform Olivia," I said and turned toward the door to leave but Roman gently gripped my wrist, stopping me.

"Don't tell her that our pack was attacked just tell her that our times up here."

Roman's pov

The drive back to our pack was quiet.

Dark clouds rolled across the afternoon sky, swallowing the sun and casting long shadows over the winding forest road. The towering pines rushed past the windows as the SUV sped along the gravel path.

One of my warriors, named Thorne occupied the passenger seat, his eyes constantly scanning the surrounding forest whilst Rynn drove.

Aurora had fallen asleep against my chest. Her head rested beneath my chin while one of my arms remained securely wrapped around her waist, holding her close.

It's been a while since I held her this close. We didn't spend much time together because I've been so busy trying to find Nicholas.

Once this is all over I plan on taking her on a small vacation where it would just be us.

I stared down at her, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. Something wasn't right with her. She was looking pale, too pale and her body was burning in my arms.

Was she getting sick?

I know humans get sick quite often. As soon as we return home I'll take her to the infirmary to get her checked out by the doctor.

I wasn't going to take any chances especially when it comes to her. She means the world to me.

My thoughts were cut off my a loud bang.

"Fuck!" Rynn muttered, slamming on the brakes.

"What is it?" I asked, my gaze still fixated on Aurora.

"Looks like we have company."

My head snapped up, eyes darting out the window.

Rogues, they surrounded the vehicle.
