Chapter 33

?Aiden watched the passing streetlights shine across Anna's face. She was looking out the window, sitting up straight, but her jaw was tight. She had been unusually quiet since they got into the car.

"What's on your mind, love?" Aiden asked softly, breaking the silence.

Anna didn't answer right away. She seemed to be searching for the right words as she watched the city lights go by. Finally, she took a quiet breath and turned to him. "I'm sorry, Aiden."

Aiden frowned slightly, a bit confused by the sudden shift. "Sorry for what?"

"Because I made a massive decision that impacts your entire empire without consulting you first," she blurted out, the words carrying the raw weight of her anxiety.

"You are the head of the Thorne family. By all rights, you should have been the one to make an alliance of that magnitude. Instead, I went and made a blood bound marriage pact completely on a whim. I just don't want it to look bad on you,

or for you to think I was overstepping your authority and trying to force your hand."

Aiden's face softened completely. Without a second thought, he reached over, wrapped a strong arm around her waist, and pulled her right against his chest. He pressed a warm, lingering kiss to her forehead, holding her close.

"Look at me," he murmured, his voice steady and warm.

Anna leaned back a little to meet his eyes.

"You are the best part of me, Anna. I trust you completely because I know you always have my and our family's best interest, at heart. You didn't overstep at all baby. You stood right by my side, exactly where you belong."

Anna let out a breath she felt like she'd been holding for days, burying her face into the crook of his neck as his hand gently stroked her hair.

In the quiet days that followed, Anna found herself caught in moments of deep reflection. Sitting on the back porch with a warm cup of tea, she looked out at the sprawling lawn of the estate and realized just how profoundly her life had changed.

The cold, rigid shell of the Wraith was still there, a lethal weapon kept sharp just beneath the surface, but it was no longer her identity.

She smiled more often now, real, genuine smiles that reached her eyes.

She found herself worrying about completely mundane things that the old Anna would have laughed at.

She worried about whether Leo would finish his vegetables, if Mia's favorite sweater would shrink in the wash, or if they had enough milk in the fridge for breakfast.

She had evolved. For the first time in her life, she wasn't sleeping with one eye open.

When a floorboard creaked in the middle of the night or the wind caused a sudden rattle against the windowpane, her hand didn't instinctively fly to the heavy steel of a gun or the cold hilt of a knife hidden under her pillow.

She simply rolled over, felt the solid, warm rhythm of Aiden's heartbeat against her back, and went right back to sleep. She was safe. She was home.

Soon after, Anna and Mia headed upstairs to the bedroom for some girls' time, painting each other's nails with bright pink polish and trying on silly, oversized hats in front of the mirror.

"You look like a real queen, Mommy," Mia giggled, carefully balancing a sparkling plastic crown on top of Anna's head.

"And you are my beautiful princess," Anna smiled, bopping Mia's nose with a little bit of lotion, making her burst into giggles.

Downstairs in the backyard, it was strictly boys' time.

Aiden and Leo were kicked back in lawn chairs, throwing a football back and forth.

It soon quickly turned into a wild competition when Leo challenged his dad to a race across the grass.

It ended with both of them tackling each other into the lawn, laughing loudly as Aiden playfully pinned him.

Anna and Mia walked out onto the porch to watch the chaos just as Marcus walked into the yard. He stopped in his tracks, and crossed his arms.

"Oh, look at this," Marcus said, wiping away an imaginary tear. "The elite boys' club over here. The special girls' club over there. And here I am, the loyal bodyguard, lonely uncle, completely unloved and discarded."

Leo scrambled up from the grass, covered in bits of lawn. "Don't cry, Uncle Marcus! Come join us, you can be on my team!"

"Yeah, Uncle Marcus," Aiden laughed, sitting up and tossing the football right into Marcus's stomach. "Stop whining and get in here."

Marcus caught the ball with a wide grin, dropping his dramatic act instantly. "Alright, but prepare to lose, Boss! Team Leo is taking you down!"

The entire backyard instantly filled with shouts, running, and unstoppable laughter as everyone joined in the game, with Mia and Anna acting as the cheerleaders.

A week later, Aiden told Anna they were going to a private business dinner with Enzo to talk about the alliance. But when they arrived at a beautiful glass building on a hill, Anna was completely surprised. The whole place was glowing with thousands of fairy lights and filled with white roses.

"Aiden... what is this?" Anna asked, turning to him in surprise.

Before she could even think, Aiden dropped to one knee and pulled a velvet box out of his jacket. Inside was a beautiful diamond ring that caught the light perfectly.

"Anna..." Aiden started.

"Yes!" Anna replied immediately, cutting him off.

Aiden looked up, completely surprised by her quick answer, which caused a loud burst of laughter to explode in the room. He grinned widely as he stood up, slipped the ring onto her finger, and pulled her into a deep, happy kiss.

Everything they had gone through together and what they would do for each other spoke loud enough, no words could explain the lengths they would go for one another.

Enzo and Vanessa were clapping warmly, followed by Marcus, who was holding a camera and sniffling dramatically.

Sitting across from Enzo and Vanessa, Anna felt a strange, new happiness blooming in her chest. They were really growing on her. In time, she knew she would learn to accept them fully, not just as business partners or distant blood, but as real family.

Later that night, back in the absolute privacy of their master bedroom, the celebration turned into a deep, intense consuming passion.

Aiden pressed Anna against the closed door, his hands tracing the lines of her body with a fierce, possessive hunger. Every kiss was heavy with the memory of what they had survived, the terror of separation, and the agonizing weight of almost losing her.

"You're mine," Aiden growled against her lips, his hands tangling in her hair as he lifted her, her legs locking around his waist.

"Always," she gasped, her hands gripping his shoulders, her engagement ring cold against his warm skin.

When he took her, it wasn't just physical, it was a profound, emotional merging of two battered souls who had found their sanctuary. They moved together with a slow, desperate reverence, remembering the pain of the past but letting it burn away in the heat of the present.

Anna rested her head on Aiden's bare chest, tracing the faint scars on his collarbone.

"Are you afraid of what comes next?" Anna asked quietly. "The syndicates, the target on our backs now that we're at the absolute top?"

Aiden wrapped his arms tighter around her, kissing the top of her head. "I used to be, but not anymore. With you by my side? I'm not afraid of the future. You are my anchor, Anna. As long as I have you to come home to, the rest of the world can burn."

Anna smiled in the dark, pressing a kiss to his chest. "And you are mine."

The next afternoon, Aiden and Anna were downstairs in the kitchen, attempting to bake cookies with the kids. Marcus was leaning against the counter, supposedly acting as "security," but mostly just eating the chocolate chips straight out of the bowl.

"Marcus, if you eat one more chocolate chip, I'm going to test my throwing accuracy with this rolling pin," Anna warned, a playful smirk on her lips.

"Hey, I'm maintaining my caloric intake to protect this family, Boss Lady," Marcus defended himself, throwing his hands up.

"Besides, Leo is the one cheating!"

"I am not!" Leo shouted, his face completely smeared with flour as he giggled.

"Are too! You put a whole marshmallow in your mouth when your dad wasn't looking," Marcus countered.

Mia laughed loudly, accidentally knocking over a small cup of sprinkles, sending a cascade of rainbow colors across the marble island. The massive dog, sitting expectantly by the table, immediately began licking the floor, its tail thumping heavily against the cabinets.

Aiden walked up behind Anna, slipping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder, watching the beautiful, messy disaster unfold. "You know, Marcus, for a highly trained tactical specialist, you're terrible at managing a kitchen."

"I specialize in extractions, Boss, not baking," Marcus shot back, grabbing the kids.

"Come on, troops, let's leave the heavy lifting to the bosses before your mom decides to use kitchen utensils as deadly weapons."

The kids cheered as Marcus led them into the living room, a trail of flour following them.

The break was over, and it was time for the kids to go back to school. For the first time, Anna was the one taking them, stepping into her new role as their official mother.

This wasn't just any regular school. It was an elite academy that hosted the children of the most powerful people in the country, wealthy moguls, top tier politicians, international diplomats, and dangerous mafia leaders like themselves.

During the morning drop off, a group of snobbish mothers and their judgmental children stood near the entrance. They whispered loudly and threw nasty looks at Anna, completely convinced she was just a temporary nanny or a random hookup that Aiden Thorne was parading around.

Anna ignored their petty comments, kissed Mia and Leo goodbye, and walked straight into the mandatory parental meeting in the school auditorium.

During the meeting, the leader of the snob circle, a wealthy politician's wife named Catherine, stood up. She looked directly at Anna and spoke out loud for everyone to hear.

"Before we discuss the school budget, I think we need to address who is allowed in our circle. This school is for elite, proper families. We shouldn't have former teachers turned nannies, turned mistresses, sitting at the table with us. It lowers the standard for the rest of us."

The room went dead silent. A few parents nodded along, while others looked incredibly uncomfortable.

Anna didn't get angry. Instead, she stood up slowly, her posture perfect, as her face turned into a mask of freezing ice. Catherine stepped back slightly as Anna walked down the aisle toward the front.

Anna stopped right in front of Catherine, looking down at her with a dangerous, beautiful smile.

"Let me clear things up for you," Anna whispered, though her voice carried to every corner of the silent room like a sharp blade.

"My name is Anna Rossi of the Rossi bloodline, soon Anna Thorne. I don't need your permission to sit in this circle."

The parents in the room who actually belonged to the underworld instantly froze in terror, recognizing her instantly. They had all heard the bloody rumors of the long lost Rossi heir who had just united the two largest syndicates in the world.

She leaned in just an inch closer, her eyes flashing with a promise of absolute ruin.

"I don't just belong in your circle, sweetie. If I wanted to, I could buy your husband's career and erase your entire family's assets by tomorrow morning. Remember my name, because the next time you try to lower my standard, I will permanently lower your life expectancy."

Catherine looked like she was about to faint, shaking under Anna's gaze. Nobody in the room dared to say anything.

"Capisce?"

Catherine nodded stiffly.

Anna smiled sweetly, turned around, and walked back to her seat.

"Good. Now let's discuss the budget."
