Chapter 34
On a cool, cloudy morning, Aiden and Anna took the children to a quiet cemetery.
?Mia and Leo walked hand in hand, carrying colorful wildflowers they had picked themselves. They stopped in front of a marble headstone that read
?Aiden knelt down with the kids and helped them place the flowers nicely at the bottom of the stone. "Hey, Isabella," Aiden said softly and gently. "The kids are here to see you. They've grown so much, and they miss you every day."
?"Look, Mama," Leo whispered, pointing to a bright yellow flower. "I picked the brightest ones for you."
?Mia looked up at Anna, who was standing a step behind them.
Anna had stepped back to give them some private time with their mom.
Mia reached out, grabbed Anna's hand, and gently pulled her down.
Anna knelt next to Aiden, feeling a deep sadness and empathy for the woman who had loved these children first.
?"Dad says you're an angel now," Mia said to the headstone. "Thank you for sending us another mommy."
?Anna's throat felt tight from emotion. The crushing weight of guilt still clawed at her chest, she felt entirely responsible for Isabella's death, and right now, that suffocating darkness was threatening to choke the very air from her lungs.
?She reached out and gently touched the cold stone.
"Thank you for bringing them into the world, Isabella," Anna whispered.
"I know I can never replace you, and I will never try to. Your place in their hearts is safe. But I promise you with everything I have that I will look after them like my own. I will protect them, love them, and make sure they always know how much you loved them."
?Mia buried her face in Anna's shoulder, and Leo moved over to hug her other side.
?Aiden looked at Anna, his eyes watery, and squeezed her hand tightly. In that quiet moment, the past and the future came together perfectly.
?In the weeks that followed, the underworld finally became quiet and stable. The alliance between the Thorne empire and the Rossi syndicate changed everything, making them completely untouchable.
On the Thorne side, the guards had shifted from a mere security detail into a tight knit family. Even Burke, the guard whose hand Anna had ruthlessly broken when they first crossed paths, now wore his scars like a badge of honor, fiercely proud to protect the family.
With their newfound power, Marcus was entirely overwhelmed by hundreds of outside soldiers begging to join their ranks.
But in their world, trust wasn't something you could buy.
Even though they were expanding, every single recruit had to be ruthlessly vetted by Marcus himself, forced to start from the very bottom to prove their loyalty.
?And then, the big day finally arrived. The huge estate was decorated with white roses, beautiful silk, and warm golden lights for the wedding.
?Before the music started and the guests arrived, the quiet halls of the house were filled with the excited, nervous energy of a wedding morning.
?Upstairs in the big bridal room, everything felt soft and smelled like fresh roses. Anna stood in front of the long mirror in a silk robe. For a woman who had faced dangerous criminals without blinking, her hands were shaking just a little.
?Mia sat on the edge of the bed, swinging her legs and holding Anna's veil very carefully.
?"Mommy, you look like you're about to fly," Mia whispered, staring in awe.
?Anna turned around, her cold look completely gone, replaced by the warmth of a mother. She knelt in front of Mia and took her small hands. "Do I? I feel like my heart is flying, sweetheart."
?"Are you nervous?" Mia asked, fixing a piece of Anna's hair. "Even though you're marrying Daddy? You know he loves you alot"
?Anna smiled, laughing softly as a tear came to her eye. "I know he does, baby. I'm not nervous about marrying him. I'm just so happy that I get to officially be your mommy today. That's the best part."
?Mia threw her arms around Anna's neck and hugged her tight. "You've always been our mommy. Now we just get to tell everyone."
Knock, knock.
The door swung open and Vanessa walked in with a warm smile. She was there to help the bride with her final touches, stepping gladly into her role as the maid of honor, especially since Anna's dangerous lifestyle meant she didn't exactly have a circle of regular friends.
Anna held her little girl close for one more second and took a deep breath, letting the nervous excitement settle.
Standing up, she let Vanessa help her step into the beautiful white gown.
The heavy silk smoothed out perfectly around her, though the touching moment quickly turned into pure fun when Mia accidentally tripped and got completely tangled up in the long, flowing train of the dress, making both Vanessa and Anna burst into laughter.
?Meanwhile, on the other side of the estate, the groom's room was a bit more chaotic. Aiden stood in front of the mirror, struggling with his bow tie. For a man who ran a massive empire perfectly, a small piece of black silk was beating him.
?Leo sat in a chair wearing his little tuxedo, eating a strawberry. He watched his dad mess up the tie for the third time.
?"Daddy, you're doing it wrong again," Leo said, shaking his head. "Uncle Marcus said that if you mess up your tie, it means you're panicking."
?Aiden dropped his hands and looked at his son, raising an eyebrow. "Oh, did he? And where is Uncle Marcus?"
?Right on cue, Marcus walked out of the bathroom with his suit jacket over his shoulder. He took one look at Aiden's crooked tie and snorted.
?"Aiden, please. You look like you got dressed in the dark," Marcus said. He stepped in and pushed Aiden's hands away to fix the tie himself with quick, practiced moves. "If the other groups see you looking messy, they'll think the Thornes are losing their edge. Stand still."
?Aiden laughed, letting Marcus fix his collar. He looked down at Leo, who was standing right next to him, putting his hands in his pockets just like his dad. Aiden reached down and playfully messed up Leo's styled hair.
?"Hey! You're ruining my look," Leo complained with a grin, but then he hugged Aiden's leg. "You look really cool, Daddy. Mommy is going to love it."
?Aiden's eyes softened. He picked Leo up and held him close. "Thanks, buddy. Are you ready to help me take care of her?"
?"Always," Leo said seriously, giving his dad a high five.
?Marcus stepped back, looking at the perfect bow tie, and clapped Aiden on the shoulder.
"Alright, you actually look like a boss now. Don't trip on your way, because I'm not carrying you."
?"Get out of here, Marcus," Aiden laughed, throwing a couch pillow at him. Marcus caught it easily with a grin.
?When the ceremony doors finally opened, the wait was worth it. The music started to play, and everyone stood up.
?Aiden forgot how to breathe. Walking down the aisle, with her arm linked securely in Enzo's, was Anna. Enzo stood tall, looking proud and protective, showing deep respect as he walked her down the aisle to give her away. Anna looked incredibly beautiful, her eyes locked only on Aiden.
The kids did a perfect job, even with a little bit of fun chaos. Leo took his job as ring bearer very seriously, perhaps a little too serious. When he got to the altar, he wouldn't give the ring box to Aiden right away.
"You have to promise to take care of mommy forever first, daddy," Leo whispered loudly, making the front rows laugh softly.
"I promise, buddy," Aiden smiled warmly, accepting the rings.
Marcus stood as Aiden's best man, smiling wide and shaking his head at Leo's loyalty.
The music faded into a soft, quiet melody as Aiden and Anna turned to face each other at the altar. The entire room went completely still, waiting to hear the words that would officially bind the heads of the Thorne and Rossi empires.
Aiden took both of Anna's hands in his. He looked down at her, his dark eyes shiny with emotion, completely ignoring the crowd around them.
"Anna," Aiden began, his voice deep and slightly thick with emotion.
"Before you came into my life, I thought my job was just to survive and keep my children safe. I lived in a world where I couldn't trust anyone. But then you stepped in. You didn't just protect my kids, you loved them. And you showed me what it truly means to have a partner. You are my anchor,
my equal, and the best part of me. Today, I promise to stand by your side through every battle, to shield you just as you shield us, and to love you ruthlessly for the rest of my days. My heart, my empire, and my life are completely yours."
A soft murmur went through the crowd. Marcus kept an eye on the room, but a proud, happy smile never left his face, while Mia and Leo watched with wide, happy eyes.
Anna smiled up at Aiden, her hands squeezing his tightly.
"Aiden," Anna said, her voice clear, steady, and full of emotion.
"I spent my whole life being a weapon and fighting in the dark. I never knew what peace felt like until I found it with you and the kids. You gave me a home. You gave me a family to fight for. So today, I promise to be your partner in everything. I promise to love you without fear,
to protect our family with everything that I am, and to build a future where we never have to look back. I am yours, Aiden. From this moment until the very end."
Enzo gave a slow, respectful nod from the front row, and the priest smiled, stepping forward to finalize the vows. Words were barely enough for what they had been through, but in front of everyone they cared about, their promises were locked in stone.
?When Aiden and Anna finally shared their first beautiful kiss as husband and wife, Marcus let out a loud whistle, clapping as the whole room cheered.
?Right after the ceremony, they took family photos out on the big green lawns. The photographer tried to keep everyone in serious poses, but it quickly turned into fun.
?"Alright, everyone look serious, like we actually run the city," Marcus joked, throwing an arm around Enzo's shoulders.
