Chapter 1

Marlowe

The riser went up at noon, and by six the plywood had gone soft under her heels.

Every time Marlowe shifted her weight, the whole platform gave a quarter inch, a small sink and rebound she could feel travel up through the arches of her feet and settle behind her knees.

She kept her smile where the photographers wanted it and let the give happen inside her shoes, down where nobody could see it, and she counted the give the way other women counted breaths.

They'd built the stage in the parking lot of a shuttered plant, because the shuttered plant polled as authentic, and the late sun came in flat and orange off a thousand windshields and turned the whole crowd into a field of hard light.

Heat came up off the asphalt in a smell she knew from a hundred of these, hot tar and cut grass and the sweetish chemical fog of whatever they'd sprayed to keep the mosquitoes off the donors.

Somewhere behind her a generator ran the lights and the sound, a low mechanical hum she'd stopped hearing hours ago and could feel now only in her teeth.

Graham was mid-sentence about the future of this district, one hand loose on the podium, the other reaching back for her without looking.

She stepped into the reach on the half-beat, the way they'd rehearsed it in a hotel ballroom with a consultant clapping time, and his palm found the small of her back through the wool of her coat.

The wool was too warm for the evening. They'd chosen it anyway, because it read as serious on camera, and she stood in it and cooked and smiled, and two thousand people made the sound a crowd makes when it decides it likes you, a low warm swell that rolled up onto the stage and broke over them.

She felt the warmth of his hand and nothing else, which was its own kind of information.

She used to be good at reading rooms for a living.

She'd read juries and press pools and the faces of men who were about to lie to her on the record.

Now she read them for him, and she read this one the way you read weather off a barometer, and the needle said they loved the two of them, and the needle said none of them could see that the hand on her back weighed exactly as much as a hand and no more.

The banners behind them were the blue they'd tested in three focus groups, a navy that split the difference between old money and church.

FAIRBANKS, in a serif that polled as trustworthy and old.

Off the stage right, in the wash of light where the donors clustered with their drinks, Sloane stood with her arms crossed and her chin up, watching the crowd instead of the man, counting the thing she always counted.

Marlowe had stopped trying to name what passed between the two of them in a room.

It didn't need a name to be true, and naming it would only have made it a thing she'd said out loud.

"—and I promise you," Graham said, and let the promise hang half a second the way they'd practiced, "we build it together, or we don't build it at all."

He turned to her on the last word. The kiss was for the photographers, and it landed exactly where the photographers needed it, at the corner of her mouth, warm and dry and gone in under a second.

She tasted the mint he chewed before every appearance and, under it, the coffee he ran on.

The crowd made the sound again, louder. His thumb pressed once against her spine, a small deliberate thing that used to mean we did it, back when they still said things to each other, back when the pressure of a thumb was a whole private sentence.

Then his hand was gone, and he was working the front row, gripping wrists, leaning into the cordon, and she was walking the steps down off the plywood on her own, one hand on the rail somebody should have thought to wipe down.

An aide she didn't know steered her toward the SUV first. That was the choreography now. The candidate stays to bleed the room dry of goodwill. The wife goes to the car and waits with the engine running and the tinted glass between her and the last of the applause.

She got in. The door shut, and the noise stopped like a hand had come down over it.

That was the part she couldn't get used to, even after four years.

Not the performing. The performing she was built for.

It was the cut, the instant the door sealed and two thousand voices dropped to the tick of the cooling engine and the sigh of the vents, and there was just the leather under her palms, cold where the shade had kept it, and her own breath going out of her too loud in the hush.

On stage she was a whole person with a job.

In the car she was furniture with a heartbeat.

She pulled off one earring and held it in her fist, the little post still warm from her skin, and she looked at the empty seat beside her where he'd get in eventually and not say anything, and she let herself feel exactly how quiet it was for as long as she could stand to, which was about forty seconds.

Then she put the earring back in, because he was coming.

Graham didn't come. Reese-from-scheduling did, jogging up to the glass with a lanyard bouncing and an apology already on her face, to tell her the candidate would ride back with the strategist to prep for a morning hit, and would she mind, and there was a second car, and someone would see her home.

She minded the way you mind weather. Fully, and to no purpose.

She got out of the first SUV so they could give it to the two of them, and she stood on the curb in the loading zone behind the venue while the valets sorted the motorcade, breathing exhaust and river damp, and that was where Sawyer found her.

She knew the walk before she knew the face.

Fast, shoulders first, a man who'd spent thirty years crossing newsrooms to tell someone their lede was buried at the bottom of their own story.

He had a press lanyard he shouldn't still have and a coat that had been rained on and dried on him more than once, and he came across the wet asphalt under the sodium lights with his hands already out of his pockets.

"Marlowe Vance," he said. Not Fairbanks. He'd never once, in fifteen years, called her Fairbanks.

"It's late for you." She kept her voice light, the curb voice, the anyone-could-be-listening voice. "You're usually asleep at your desk by now, chin on the keyboard, drooling on the copy."

"I heard a rumor the paper still runs after nine." He stopped a polite foot away, hands loose at his sides, and looked at her the way he used to look at a story he wasn't sure he could stand up. "You look expensive."

"That's the job."

"It was a good speech. He's good." He said good the way he'd say a knife was sharp, as a plain fact about a tool that could open a box or open a vein. "You wrote the close."

"I did not."

"You wrote the close." One corner of his mouth moved.

"Build it together, or we don't build it at all.

That's you. That's not a consultant. A consultant writes bring people together.

You write the version with a threat folded inside it, so quiet the crowd claps for the threat and never feels the edge. "

She didn't tell him he was right. The cold was coming up off the concrete through the thin soles of shoes that cost more than her first car, and she wanted to be in the second SUV with the door shut and the noise gone, and she did not want to want that, so she stayed on the curb and let her feet go numb.

"You didn't cross a parking lot to review my husband's rhetoric," she said.

"No." He glanced once at the venue doors, then back, and dropped his voice under the idle of the engines. "There's a thing I can't run. I've got a piece of it and no way to walk it, and everybody I'd hand it to is either scared of the name or already bought, and it's got the name all over it."

"The name."

"Fairbanks." He watched her face when he said it, the way you watch a subject, and she gave him the nothing she was good at giving.

"A foundation project. Development, few years back, out past the river.

Somebody got hurt on it. Then the getting-hurt went away.

Paperwork, settlements, a story that stopped being a story so fast it left skid marks.

It smells, Marlowe. It smells like the ones we used to like.

It smells like the ones that used to keep you at your desk past dawn with your shoes off, kicking the drawer. "

A car horn went off somewhere across the lot, and she didn't jump, and she was proud of not jumping, which told her exactly how low the bar had gotten.

"I'm not a reporter," she said.

"You were the best natural I ever hired, and I hired forty."

"I'm a wife."

"You're a wife now." He said it gently, which was worse than if he'd said it mean, and he took a card out of his coat, an actual paper card, soft at the corners from riding around in that coat for God knew how long.

He held it out and didn't push it on her, didn't close the distance, just let it sit in the air between them.

"I'm not asking you to do anything. I'm telling you it exists, and I'm telling you I don't have hands clean enough to touch it.

If that means nothing to you, throw the card in the river on the way home.

You'll drive right over it. You won't even have to slow down. "

She looked at the card. Newsprint gray, one phone number, no name, no title, the way he'd always done it. Reachable, deniable, the whole philosophy of a career on one soft rectangle.

"Marlowe," Sawyer said, and for a second he wasn't old and rained-on and standing in a loading zone.

He was the man who'd stood behind her at a courthouse the first time a source recanted on her on the stand, when she'd walked out and thrown up in a stairwell from the pure adrenaline of the fall, and he'd come down after her and handed her a warm can of ginger ale from the machine and said welcome to the good part.

She took the card. She didn't fully know why. Her hand did it before the rest of her signed off on it, reached out and closed on the soft gray paper the way a hand closes on a rail when the floor moves.

She put it in her coat pocket, deep, past the phone, down where the lining had a hole she kept meaning to have fixed and never did. It went through the hole into the hem, out of her own reach, which felt exactly correct. Hidden from her too.

"Goodnight, Sawyer."

"Get some sleep, Vance." He was already turning, coat flaring, hands going back into his pockets. "You look like a woman who forgot she's allowed to."

She got into the second car. The door shut. The noise went away.

This time she didn't put the earring back.

The house at that hour had a hush to it that wasn't peace.

It was the sound of a great deal of square footage being climate-controlled around three sleeping people and a fourth who wasn't home, a low even breath of ductwork and the tick of a grandfather clock nobody wound for the time.

One lamp burned in the front hall on a timer, throwing a circle of warm nothing onto marble that stayed cold no matter what season it was pretending to be.

She came in through the side, out of habit. She always took the service stairs. She couldn't have said when that started, only that it had, the way a path wears itself into a lawn one crossing at a time until the grass gives up.

Graham's study door stood open a crack, and the light was on, which meant he'd beaten her home after all, which meant the second SUV had gone the long way on purpose, and she stopped in the hall in her coat with her keys still biting into her palm and listened to her husband laugh.

It was a real laugh. That was the thing about it.

She hadn't heard the performed one since the stage, and this wasn't that.

This was the low, easy, caught-off-guard laugh, the one that broke in the middle, the one that used to be hers.

It used to happen at two in the morning in a different, smaller life, when she'd say something wicked about a colleague into the dark of a rented bedroom and he'd lose it into a pillow so the neighbors wouldn't hear through the wall.

"—no, no, you're right, that's the line, we lead with that," he was saying, and then he laughed again, softer, and said, "God, what would I do with you," and the you had a whole warm house inside it, lit windows and a fire going and somebody home.

She couldn't see the phone. She didn't need to see the phone.

She stood in the doorway a full minute. Her coat was still cold from the car, holding the night on it, and there was a smell coming off it, the whole evening layered in the wool, hot lights and someone's floral perfume and the chemical sweetness of a room sprayed for a crowd, and under all of it the wet-wool smell of a coat she should have thrown out two winters ago because it still had a hole in the lining.

He was turned three-quarters away, one foot up on the edge of the desk, phone to his ear, and the lamp caught the side of his face and the good line of his jaw, and he looked, for the first time all night, completely at ease.

At home. With her voice in his ear and his wife in the doorway in her coat, and the distance between those two facts was the whole size of the marriage.

He never turned around.

She could have said his name. That was the truth of it, and later everyone would want the simple case, that he did this to her and she only stood there and took it.

Part of that was true. But she stood in that doorway with his name sitting ready in her mouth, and she chose not to spend it.

She turned around and took the service stairs up, in her coat, in the dark, with a stranger's card sewn into her hem and a warm laugh at her back that wasn't for her, and she let him have it, and she told herself it was because she was tired.

She got all the way to the top before she understood she'd been holding her breath since the door.
