Chapter 2
Graham
His father caught him at the top of the boathouse stairs, which was where he caught everybody, because it was the one place on the property with no chairs, and he knew a man would agree to almost anything faster on his feet.
He had a rag in one hand and varnish on his knuckles.
He'd been down with the boats. He was always down with the boats, the little fleet of antique sloops he restored and oiled and buffed and never once put in the water, and the smell of the varnish came up the stairs ahead of him the way it had come up those stairs his entire life, sweet and sharp and faintly medicinal, the smell of every Sunday he could remember.
Below him through the open bay doors the river went by gray and quick, slapping the pilings, and one of the sloops sat up on sawhorses with its hull gleaming like something that had never been allowed to get wet.
"You're doing it," his father said. No good morning. Augustus spent words the way he spent everything, which was carefully and never on comfort.
"Doing what."
"The seat." He wiped his hands on the rag, slow, not looking at his son, working a fleck of dried varnish off his thumbnail with the edge of the cloth.
"Delaney's boy had his shot and passed. Beckett won't leave the company, God love him, he'd rather count other people's money than go make some.
You're the one with the face and the wife and no felonies. It's you."
"That's not a conversation, Dad. That's a casting call."
"It's the same thing at our altitude." He said it without heat, still working the thumbnail.
Then he looked up, and his father had the kind of stillness that made you check your own posture without deciding to, a stillness that had emptied a great many rooms of arguments before they were spoken.
"I built a name that opens any door in this state and half the ones in the next.
I did not build it so it could sit in a foundation office writing checks to Little Leagues and getting its photograph taken next to a check the size of a door.
A Fairbanks belongs in the room where they decide things.
You've known this since you were nine years old and you asked me why the governor took my call and not the other way round. "
"Marlowe—"
"Marlowe will be the best political wife this state has seen in forty years, and she knows it, which is exactly why she's angry, which is her business and yours and none of mine.
" He folded the rag into a neat square along creases it already had.
"I'm not asking whether you want it. Wanting is for men who might not get the thing.
I'm telling you it's yours, and I'm telling you not to embarrass the name while you take it. "
The river slapped the pilings. A gull went over, complaining about something, and the light off the water moved on the underside of his father's jaw.
There was a thing that happened in Graham's chest when his father talked like that, and he'd never found a word for it that he liked.
It wasn't fear. It was older than fear. It was the specific weight of being the son who says yes, which was the only thing he had ever known how to be at the top of those stairs, with the varnish coming up sweet between them and a boat behind his father that would never touch the water it was built for.
"Okay," he said.
"Okay." Augustus put the rag in his back pocket.
On his way past, he gripped his son's shoulder once, hard, the whole of his affection delivered in about a pound of pressure, and he smelled like oil and cold river and the same aftershave he'd worn since before Graham was born.
"Your mother's growing a purple orchid. Some ridiculous name, I can't pronounce it, she says it took three years to bloom.
Go make a sound about it, Graham. It costs you nothing and she'll remember it for a month. "
Then he went back down to the boats he would never sail, and Graham stood at the top of the stairs and said yes to the United States Senate to a man who was already gone, and the yes sat in his chest next to all the others, in the room where he kept them.
The war room was a converted conference floor Sloane had bullied out of the building manager, and by nine that night it smelled like burnt coffee, dry-erase marker, and the particular staleness of takeout containers stacked in a bin that should have gone down to the dumpster at six and hadn't.
They were forty minutes into debate prep, and he was losing.
"Again," Sloane said. She was up on the edge of the table, one heel hooked on the back of a chair, a legal pad balanced on her knee, and she had the red pen out, which meant he'd said something soft.
"The healthcare pivot. You went mushy. Reyes is going to hit you on the foundation's clinic closures, and you handed me a hug where I needed a knife. Again."
"I don't want to sound like I'm gloating about shutting down—"
"You don't sound like you're gloating. You sound like you're apologizing for existing.
Reyes doesn't apologize. Reyes eats, and he wipes his mouth on your record while he does it.
" She clicked the pen twice, a tic, a metronome.
"Come on. He says, your family shut three clinics and called it fiscal discipline. Go."
"He's not wrong that we closed them."
"He's not asking you to be right, Graham. He's asking you to lose, on camera, in front of four hundred thousand people who've already decided the rich kid is soft. Don't lose. Go."
He set his coffee down. The cup left a ring on a printout of his own polling. He found the version of his voice that lived an inch lower than the real one, the one his father used at the top of the stairs, and he let it out.
"Three clinics that were bleeding money and serving eleven people a week between them," he said, "and I took that money and I put it into two clinics that actually work, that see two hundred people a day, and if my opponent thinks keeping the lights on in an empty building is compassion, then he should run for building manager, not Senate. "
Sloane went still. Then she pointed the red pen at him like a verdict coming down. "There he is."
And here was the thing he was not proud of.
Something opened up in his chest when she said it.
Not the yes-weight from the boathouse stairs.
The opposite of that. The bright specific feeling of being seen doing the one thing I'm good at, which he would have told you, a few years back, was a feeling he got at home, from a woman who used to sit across a kitchen table from him and take his arguments apart joint by joint and hand them back to him sharper than he'd built them.
Sloane got down off the table. She refilled his coffee without asking, black, the way she knew he took it after ten, and she sat in the chair beside his instead of the one across, and for a while they just worked, fast and clean, finishing each other's sentences, catching each other's half-thoughts in the air before they hit the ground.
It was the best hour of his day. He knew, sitting in it, that it was the best hour of his day, and he let it be, and he didn't ask himself why the best hour of his day happened in a room that smelled like burnt coffee and not in his own house.
"You're tired," she said later, quiet, not looking up from the pad. "You've been holding your jaw all night. You do that thing where you grind and think I can't tell."
"It's a lot. The seat. The timing."
"It's your father." She marked something on the pad, crossed it out, marked it again. "It's home."
He should have let that lie there. A better man would have let that lie there, finished his coffee, gone home to his wife.
Instead he heard himself say it, low, the thing you only say to someone at ten at night in a room that smells like burnt coffee, when your defenses are down and somebody just told you there he is and meant it.
"She stopped—" he started, and stopped, and made himself start again.
"Marlowe used to fight with me. About the work.
She'd take a position apart at the dinner table, right down to the studs, and I'd want to strangle her and I'd want to marry her again, both, at the same time, in the same minute.
Now she just. Agrees. Smiles and agrees and refills the water glasses and goes upstairs to read.
I'd give a year off the end of my life to have her call me an idiot one more time and mean it, and I don't know how to ask for that, because asking for it means saying out loud that it's gone. "
The room got very quiet. The building's air handler cycled off, and the quiet got quieter.
Sloane didn't touch him. He wanted that on the record, for whatever it turned out to be worth, which he was learning was not much.
She didn't touch him and she didn't say anything soft.
She just looked at him a second too long, one beat past professional, and then she looked back down at her pad, and she said, "Then win this thing, and go home, and pick a fight with her about something you actually disagree on.
She'll meet you there. Women like that always do. "
It was exactly the right thing to say. It was said by the wrong person. And he let her say it, and he felt the comfort of it settle in his chest in the room he kept for things he shouldn't have, and he went home late, and he told himself he felt better.
He gave his wife's silence to a woman across a conference table.
He handed over the one tender true thing he had, the plain ache of missing Marlowe, and he set it down in front of Sloane like an offering on a plate, and Sloane was smart enough to leave it sitting there untouched and let him feel generous for having shown it to her.
That was the affair. Right there. Not a hotel. That.
At 11:40 his phone lit up with a news alert, and then it lit up with nine more in a stack, and then it started ringing in his hand.
Reyes had gone up early. First ad of the cycle, a full week before anyone on his side expected metal, thirty seconds of a shuttered clinic with plywood screwed over the windows and a woman's voiceover, gentle, almost sad, about the Fairbanks family's idea of charity.
It ended on a still photo of his father shaking hands with a developer at a groundbreaking, gold shovels, hard hats, and four white words dropped over the frozen handshake. A NAME FOR SALE.
"That's a good ad," Sloane said, watching it on her laptop, and she said good the way a professional says it, the way Sawyer would have said it, the way you acknowledge a clean shot even when it's put a hole in you.
"That's a genuinely good ad. Okay. Okay.
We don't respond tonight. Responding tonight makes it a two-day story instead of a one-day story, we let it—"
"We respond tonight," he said.
"Graham—"
"That's my father's face on that photograph."
She looked at him for a long moment across the blue light of the screen. Then she closed the laptop halfway, so the room went dim on one side. "Fine," she said. "Then we do it right, and we're here until two, and you don't get to be tired about it in the morning."
They were there until two.
He got home at 2:40 with a response strategy in his phone and varnish somehow still in his nose from a boathouse twelve hours gone. The house did its hush at him. One lamp in the hall, the timer lamp, the circle of warm nothing on the cold marble.
And there was a light on upstairs. Under the door at the end of the hall.
Marlowe's light, the reading lamp on her side of a bed he hadn't slept in properly in weeks, on at almost three in the morning, which meant she was awake, which meant she'd been awake, maybe for hours, maybe since he'd been laughing on the phone with the study door open like a man who'd forgotten he had a wife.
He stood at the bottom of the service stairs with his hand on the newel post, the wood worn smooth by four generations of hands, and he looked up at the light under her door.
He told himself she was reading. He told himself it was late and he was wrecked and he'd only make it worse tired, that he'd talk to her in the morning, really talk, ask about her day, the thing he kept meaning to ask about her day and kept not doing.
He told himself a whole small stack of reasonable things, and every one of them was true, and all of them together added up to a lie.
He went to the guest room off the study, so he wouldn't wake her.
That was what he told himself it was. Not waking her.
The light under her door was still on when he finally slept, and he lay in the guest bed in his own house and watched the thin gold line of it under the far door until his eyes gave up, and not once did he get up and cross the hall, which was eleven steps, which he had counted many times since.
