CHAPTER FIVE

The Dragon King's Promise

"Destiny does not ask permission. It simply remembers."

The sanctuary had fallen silent.

No soldier dared breathe.

The enormous silver dragon remained bowed before Lyra.

Its golden eyes reflected centuries of wisdom.

Lyra still held the moonlit sword.

Its silver glow pulsed gently in her hands.

She looked completely overwhelmed.

"I..."

She swallowed.

"I don't understand any of this."

The dragon slowly raised its head.

Its deep voice echoed through the chamber.

"You were never meant to."

Lyra stared.

"You... can speak?"

A faint smile appeared across the dragon's ancient face.

"We spoke long before humans learned language."

Queen Seraphine stepped forward.

Her voice was unusually respectful.

"Great Guardian..."

"Tell us."

"Is she truly..."

The dragon interrupted.

"Yes."

The Queen lowered her head.

Even Kael remained silent.

The dragon looked directly at Lyra.

"You carry her soul."

Lyra's heartbeat quickened.

"What does that mean?"

The dragon answered softly.

"You are not Queen Selene."

"You are her second life."

Silence.

The words settled over everyone like snow.

Lyra shook her head.

"No..."

"That's impossible."

"I have parents."

"I grew up in Riverhaven."

"I lived a normal life."

The dragon nodded.

"And before that..."

"You ruled the greatest kingdom ever built."

Suddenly—

A sharp pain shot through Lyra's head.

Images exploded inside her mind.

A silver throne.

White dragons soaring above crystal towers.

Moonlight reflected across endless lakes.

Laughter.

Music.

A young king standing beside her.

His face remained hidden.

But his voice...

Warm.

Gentle.

Filled with love.

"If time separates us... I will find you again."

The memory disappeared.

Lyra gasped for air.

A single tear rolled down her cheek.

Kael immediately stepped toward her.

"Lyra."

She looked at him.

"I heard someone."

His voice softened.

"What did he say?"

She whispered,

"He promised..."

"...that he'd find me."

Kael's expression changed.

Only for a second.

But Lyra noticed.

"You know who he is."

Kael looked away.

"I wish I didn't."

The dragon watched them quietly.

Then spoke.

"The promise was never broken."

Everyone turned.

The dragon continued.

"The Moon Queen died."

"The Dragon King did not."

Every soldier froze.

Queen Seraphine slowly whispered,

"Impossible..."

"The Dragon King sacrificed himself."

The dragon shook its massive head.

"No."

"He disappeared."

Kael's grip tightened around his sword.

The dragon looked directly at him.

"You know where he sleeps."

Kael didn't answer.

"You've always known."

Still...

Silence.

Lyra looked between them.

"What are you talking about?"

Kael finally spoke.

"There is another sanctuary."

The Queen immediately shouted,

"No!"

Kael ignored her.

"It lies beyond the Black Mountains."

"No map shows it."

"No traveler has ever returned."

Lyra frowned.

"Why?"

Kael's answer was quiet.

"Because something guards it."

The dragon closed its eyes.

"Not something."

"...Someone."

A cold wind rushed through the sanctuary.

Every torch extinguished.

Darkness swallowed the chamber.

Only Lyra's sword continued glowing.

Then—

Footsteps echoed.

Slow.

Heavy.

Not inside the sanctuary.

Outside.

Someone was approaching.

One...

Two...

Three...

The footsteps stopped.

A voice echoed through the entrance.

Young.

Calm.

Almost amused.

"So..."

"It finally happened."

A tall man slowly walked into the moonlight.

Long white hair.

Silver eyes.

Black armor covered with ancient dragon symbols.

He couldn't have been older than twenty-five.

Yet something about him felt impossibly ancient.

Every dragon inside the sanctuary lowered its head.

Even the enormous silver guardian.

Kael instantly drew his sword.

His face had turned pale.

"No..."

Lyra whispered,

"Who is he?"

Kael answered through clenched teeth.

"The last person I ever wanted you to meet."

The stranger smiled.

His eyes settled on Lyra.

Not with hatred.

Not with surprise.

With recognition.

"As beautiful..."

He murmured.

"...as the night you disappeared."

Lyra's heart pounded.

"I don't know you."

The stranger laughed softly.

"No."

"You don't."

"But I have spent one thousand years..."

"...waiting for you."

The sanctuary became deathly silent.

The stranger slowly knelt before Lyra.

Not like a servant.

Like a king greeting his queen.

He placed one hand over his heart.

"My name..."

He lifted his silver eyes toward hers.

"...is Orion."

"The Dragon King."

Every soldier gasped.

Queen Seraphine stumbled backward.

"Impossible..."

Kael looked ready to attack.

Orion smiled without fear.

"You still hate me."

Kael replied coldly,

"You destroyed everything."

Orion's smile disappeared.

.

"No."

"I tried to save it."

Lyra looked from Kael...

To Orion...

To the dragon.

Nothing made sense anymore.

"Someone..."

She whispered.

"Tell me the truth."

The dragon lowered its head.

"The truth..."

"It depends on whose history you believe."

Orion slowly stood.

He extended his hand toward Lyra.

"Come with me."

"I'll show you the kingdom they erased."

Kael stepped between them.

"She isn't going anywhere."

Orion looked at Kael.

"I wasn't asking you."

For a long moment...

Neither man moved.

The air itself seemed ready to shatter.

Lyra suddenly realized something.

Neither of them hated her.

They were both trying to protect her.

But...

From completely different truths.

Orion smiled sadly.

"When you're ready..."

"You'll remember."

He turned to leave.

Then stopped.

Without looking back, he quietly said—

"You still wear the necklace I gave you."

Lyra instinctively touched the small silver pendant she had worn since childhood.

She had never taken it off.

Her breathing stopped.

No one...

Had ever seen it beneath her cloak.

Except...

Someone who already knew it existed.

As Orion disappeared into the darkness...

The silver pendant around Lyra's neck began to glow.

For the first time...

It unfolded.

Into half...

Of a broken moon.
