Chapter Seven

Kara

Mera stepped in through the back door and I could hear the smirk before she spoke. “He was an interesting guy.” By interesting, she meant good-looking. I shook my head which caused her to let out a chuckle. “What? It isn’t every day we have guys visiting us.”

“Not every day,” I replied in a playful tone. I was busy laying out my herbs to prepare them into salves and oils. It was a careful practice that I’ve done many times, but still, I didn’t care to be interrupted.

“Well, nice guys anyway,” she added and then paused for a moment before she spoke again. “So, how nice was he?”

“He was okay,” I answered knowing she wanted me to go into detail. She was just like any other woman who needed her next fix of gossip and drama.

“He seemed nice enough to be able to make it in the cabin and then make it out alive. What did he want?”

“He wants peace,” I said even though I knew that would lead to more questions.

“Clearly he isn’t from our favorite pack.”

Calling the pack we’ve had nothing but trouble with our favorite was a joke, but it was one of the names we used to call it.

Turning away from my task, I faced Mera and sighed, giving her my undivided attention. This was something that I was happy to report. “He’s not from that pack. He’s from another pack and standing in as the temporary alpha.”

“Well, that’s good news,” she said boastfully. “Hopefully, we can get peace after all. Is that the only reason for his visit?”

“Not really. He wanted to check on Sophia and offer his assistance in anything we needed help with. After ingesting a little truth serum, he was indeed not lying about his intentions.”

“I think we should take him up on his offer to help. We could use it, especially since it’s his pack, new or not, that has caused us so many problems. Do you think his wolves are done harassing us?”

“Guess we’ll find out.”

“What does that mean for our sanctuary then?”

“I’m not sure.” That was certainly an interesting question that I didn’t think about until Mera mentioned it.

“We’re both trained as midwives. It wouldn’t hurt for us to continue helping out in that capacity.”

“I wouldn’t be moving in with the pack if that’s what you’re suggesting.”

“Not what I meant. There are plenty of opportunities outside of the supernatural realm.”

“That’s true.”

I honestly hadn’t thought of that either. It’s true that Mera and I had the capability of working in the human world. She’s done it before, yet, she chose to come back to help me. Would this new alpha truly bring change? And, does that mean my work is done? I didn’t know. We had been dealing with an unruly pack for so many decades, that we didn’t foresee anything like this coming.

“I guess I would have to talk to this new alpha again,” I said.

“Oh, you know you want to. At least have him come here so I could get a good look at him,” Mera joked, eliciting a boisterous laugh from me.

I shook my head. “You just need something nice to look at, don’t you?”

“Maybe,” Mera jested, giving me a wink. “At least you’re finally admitting that he’s nice-looking.”

“I didn’t say he wasn’t,” I said with a small laugh.

“You didn’t. But, you didn’t admit he was until now.”

“You are a mess, Mera,” I said shaking my head.

“And I’m sure that he has your hormones all over the place,” she joked.

“Oh, from the sound of it, that’s what he’s done to you,” she replied with a smirk. I didn’t want to tell her what my wolf thinks of the newcomer. Mera for sure would be picking on me nonstop. I needed my time for peace and quiet. I also needed time to

I also needed time to reassess the fact that my wolf thinks John is our mate. I can’t just accept that without getting to know him better. His new pack is the blame for that. I don’t date. I just don’t. Not to say that I wouldn’t be interested. He did look very nice without his clothes and seemed well enough endowed for me to sneak a few glimpses.

I don’t know what it was about male werewolves and being well-equipped, but I’ve never seen one that was small. Now, I can’t say anything about the human males, because I’ve known quite a few that didn’t have anything worth bragging about.

I shook my head to try and clear my thoughts. Both, Mera and my wolf had me thinking about sex and the lack thereof. It had seriously been a while, and yes, my hormones were acting up after John’s visit.

“I need to gather some more herbs,” I said, feeling flustered.

Mera couldn’t help but let out a cackle. “Somebody sure has you hot and bothered.”

“No, I just need some more herbs.”

“Girl, you have enough herbs all over the counter there. You just need to cool off. Maybe see if you can catch a whiff of him if his scent is still lingering.”

I grabbed my basket off the top of the fridge and stepped outside as quickly as I could to avoid listening to her blather on any more about her nonsense. Mera knew I was half-wolf and that I was one of the few females who could shift. I wanted to leave before she started asking what my wolf thought. Thankfully, Mera hadn’t bothered asking about it. Hopefully, she wouldn’t. I was done talking about the subject altogether. Being outside would not only give me some fresh air, but it would give me the peace and quiet I needed to think.
