Chapter Eight
John
Whatever Kara put in the tea seemed to have worn off by the time I made it back to the estate as my mind felt clearer. Gladly so because as I made it back to the office, the so-called self-appointed alpha was once again sitting in the chair in the office Paul and I had evicted him from.
Glancing around the room, I noticed his thugs weren’t around and it was just him and me in the office. I thought about reaching into my pocket for my cell phone and calling Paul to come up here, but I had tasked him to find help in cleaning up the dungeon. I drew in a deep breath and slowly released it. I could handle this on my own.
“I thought I told you to leave,” I said sharply.
“I felt inclined to return since you went after something I want,” he replied smugly. He was leaning back in the chair with his hands behind his head, watching me curious with a smirk. I surmised he was calculating how quickly he could make it over the desk and have me on the ground. He wouldn’t do it though.
“I told you that the Council doesn’t want anyone from this pack to be alpha. That’s why I’m here.” I stood there with my arms crossed, feeling irritated that I was having to repeat myself again.
“Oh, I’ll be alpha. Maybe not here, but I’ll be taking some of my pack with me.”
“I already informed you that you can’t do that.”
“Watch me,” he growled, dropping his hands on the desk with a loud thud. I seemed to be poking the beast and rightly so. After taking a tour of the basement, I was angry.
“You’ll be eradicated. It will be a death sentence for you and those who follow you.”
“Doubt it,” he snorted. “But, that’s not what I was talking about.”
“Do tell then.”
“That woman is carrying my pup.”
“Oh, so you’re admitting to forcing yourself on the human woman then?”
He let out a breathy laugh through his nose. “I’m not the only one. The alpha had her the first week. Then, after he left, I took her and made her mine.”
“She’s your mate?”
“Not even close,” he snorted.
“Well, she isn’t yours then.”
He let out a snarling growl and his eyes turned a golden hue. He was on the verge of shifting, yet I stood there, keeping calm. Any sudden change in my mood or a sudden movement could have him shifting and possibly ripping my head off.
“The pup she’s carrying is mine,” he said in a deeper voice, showing his lengthening canines, “and I’ll have it even if I have to take matters into my own hands.”
“That isn’t happening,” I replied casually. “That woman is under my protection, as well as the Council’s. You have been banished from this pack. I’ve already notified Council.”
At least now I knew who abused the woman in Kara’s care. I was trying to keep my cool and not tell him what I truly thought of him. I was against forcing a woman into doing something she didn’t want to do, especially forcing a human woman to breed against their will.
He stood up and slowly approached me, scowling as he did and showing me his mouthful of sharp teeth. I stood there, unwavering, my arms crossed, my face relaxed, my heartbeat even. I wasn’t about to back down because he was attempting to intimidate me.
He stopped within a foot of me. His frame towering a few inches above me. Could he take me on and win? Sure. He was more muscular than I was and an alpha for sure, but he wasn’t going to for the simple fact that the Council would order his death if he did. I was here on official business, and he was interfering. Or, attempting to.
He huffed through his nose when I didn’t bother to look up or back away. “I’ll have that woman and you or Council won’t stop me.”
“Should I tell Council to go ahead and order your execution then?” I asked, taking a chance to direct my gaze to his.
He snarled and huffed again. His wolf was gesturing and on the verge of taking over, so I knew that they were both on the same page. Instead of answering me, he shoved his way past me, pushed me out of the way with his body, and left.
I released a deep sigh through my mouth and walked over to the desk. I needed the Council to be updated. If there was ever a Cover-Your-Ass moment, this was it.
“Shit!” I shouted. I didn’t even know his name. That was something I needed to ask George and he was also busy.
Secondly, how do I inform the Council that there is a human woman who is carrying a werewolf? I promised to protect Kara and those in her sanctuary. By telling Council, I would have to indulge her whereabouts. Kidnapping and breeding human women went against our laws. Council knew what this pack was doing. That’s why I was here to put a stop to it. But, now I had an angered wolf who admitted to getting a human woman pregnant. She needed to be protected at all costs and so did Kara.
Kara was not only a witch, but she was also a wolf. I could smell it. She wasn’t part of any pack but her own. She was an alpha in her own right, but she was off the radar. Which meant that the Council didn’t know about her. If I reported the woman to the Council, I would also have to report Kara.
“Fuck,” I swore under my breath. I wasn’t sure what to do and that wasn’t like me. I always did what was right and followed the rules. “All right,” I said out loud to myself as I picked up my cell phone, “I’ll do what is right.”
