CHAPTER FIVE

Six days later, Dana invited Brynn to the presidential retreat.

The visit appeared on the official access record as a private meeting with the president during Agent Shaw's medical leave.

Monica arranged the schedule so no public event, staff dinner, or policy session overlapped with the evening.

The active detail received the information it required: Brynn would arrive as a cleared personal guest, would possess no operational role, and would remain subject to the same movement restrictions as any visitor.

No one received the reason. Dana arrived first.

The retreat had been designed to offer presidents privacy while ensuring they never truly possessed it.

Agents guarded the grounds. Military staff maintained communications.

Aides remained close enough to answer national emergencies and far enough to preserve the appearance of ordinary life.

Dana stood alone in the private sitting room when Brynn's vehicle entered the property.

She wore a soft sweater and dark skirt rather than a suit.

The presidential seal pin remained upstairs.

Brynn arrived in a long coat over charcoal trousers and a black sweater.

She moved more easily than she had during the debrief, though she still protected her left side when she believed no one was watching. Dana noticed.

Brynn noticed her noticing.

"Pain?" Dana asked once the staff had withdrawn.

"Two."

"Honest?"

"Yes."

Dana nodded. They stood in the center of the room with everything they had discussed waiting between them. Brynn removed her coat. "Have you eaten?"

"Lunch is prepared."

"That was not the question."

Dana almost smiled. "Breakfast. All of it."

"Sleep?"

"Six hours. One interruption. I returned to sleep."

Approval warmed Brynn's eyes.

"Good."

The word reached Dana immediately. Brynn saw the response.

"We eat first," she said.

Lunch was simple and private. Soup, bread, salad, and roasted chicken waited on a sideboard.

Dana ate without argument while Brynn described the limits of her medical clearance.

She could travel, sit for several hours, and walk short distances.

No physical exertion. No lifting. No pressure against the healing side.

"Nothing tonight will require you to ignore pain," Dana said.

"Nothing tonight will require you to hide discomfort either."

"Agreed."

After lunch, they returned to the sitting room. Dana delayed. She checked the secure phone, straightened a folder that did not need attention, and asked whether Brynn wanted tea. Brynn watched without interrupting. Finally, Dana set down the phone.

"I am nervous."

"Good."

Dana frowned.

"Nervousness means you understand that this matters," Brynn said. "It does not mean we should proceed."

"I want to proceed."

"Then we discuss attraction before authority."

Dana folded her hands.

"Were you attracted to me before the attack?" Brynn asked.

The directness startled her.

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Months. Perhaps longer. I refused to examine it."

"Why?"

"You were assigned to protect me. I was married when you joined the detail. Later, I was campaigning. Then I was president. None of those circumstances encouraged reflection."

"Did the attack create your desire to submit?"

Dana considered the question carefully.

"No. It revealed it."

"How?"

"I obeyed you before I understood the danger. Afterward, your instructions through the messages gave me relief I had not known how to ask for."

"Gratitude can intensify that relief."

"I know."

"Do you believe you owe me access to your body?"

"No."

"Do you believe refusing me would dishonor what I did?"

"No."

"Would you want this if I had never been shot?"

Dana met her gaze.

"Yes."

Brynn accepted the answer.

"Now the stopping system," she said. "Enough remains the safeword. We also use colors. Green means continue. Yellow means pause, slow down, or change something. Red means stop immediately."

"Why both red and enough?"

"Red ends the current action. Enough ends the entire exchange."

Dana nodded.

"You may use ordinary no only to mean no," Brynn continued. "Not as provocation. Not when you mean convince me."

"Agreed."

"You can ask questions at any time."

"Even while submitting?"

"Especially then."

Brynn stood and approached.

"What do you want tonight?"

Dana's mouth went dry.

"To surrender control."

"Too broad."

"I want you to decide where I stand, when I move, and how I am touched."

"Sex?"

Dana's breathing changed.

"I want it."

"That was not the question."

Dana looked down.

"No," she said. "Not if you believe it is too soon."

"Why would it be too soon?"

"Because I still need proof you desire me rather than only care for me."

Brynn's expression softened without losing focus.

"That is honest."

Dana exhaled. Brynn lifted a folded length of dark fabric from the table.

"Blindfold?"

Dana's pulse accelerated.

"Yes."

"Color?"

"Green."

Brynn stepped behind her and placed the fabric over her eyes. Darkness closed around Dana. Brynn tied it carefully, then touched both shoulders.

"Can you see?"

"No."

"Dizziness?"

"No."

"Where am I?"

"Behind me."

Brynn moved without touching her. Dana listened.

"Now?"

"I do not know."

"Good. Hands at your sides."

Dana obeyed. Brynn approached from the front. Fingers touched beneath Dana's chin and lifted her face.

"What do you want me to do?"

"Kiss me."

Brynn did not. Dana waited. The absence became its own pressure.

"Why?" Brynn asked.

"Because I want you."

"Anything else?"

Dana's face warmed beneath the blindfold.

"Because I need to know you want me."

Brynn's thumb moved along her lower lip.

"Those are different needs."

"Yes."

"And tonight we separate them."

Dana's body tightened.

"You are refusing?"

"I am refusing to use sex or a kiss to prove that your body remains desirable after trauma."

The accuracy hurt. Dana tried to step back. Brynn's hand settled at her waist, stopping without restraining.

"Color?"

Dana forced herself to remain honest.

"Yellow."

Brynn removed her hand immediately.

"What needs to change?"

"I need to know you are not rejecting me."

"I desire you."

Dana's breath caught.

"I thought about kissing you before the attack," Brynn continued. "I thought about it in the hospital, which was inappropriate and inconvenient. I thought about it while you knelt in the study."

Heat moved through Dana.

"Then why not now?"

"Because desire does not require immediate action. I need you to know I can want you and still say no."

Dana stood in the darkness, breathing slowly.

"What do you need from me?" Brynn asked.

"To stay when you refuse me."

"I am here."

The same words that had carried Dana through the night after the shooting. Her shoulders lowered.

"Color?"

"Green."

Brynn moved behind her.

"Raise your arms."

Dana obeyed. Brynn lifted the sweater from her body. Cool air touched the camisole beneath it.

"Arms down."

The sweater was folded and placed somewhere nearby. Brynn unfastened Dana's skirt and guided it over her hips. Dana stepped free when instructed. She stood blindfolded in a camisole and underwear. No kiss. No explicitly sexual touch. The vulnerability remained intense.

"How do you feel?" Brynn asked.

"Exposed."

"Badly?"

"No."

"Anything else?"

"Wanted."

"Why?"

Dana listened for Brynn's position.

"Because you are taking your time."

Approval entered Brynn's voice. "Good." Dana shivered. Brynn touched the back of her neck.

"Come with me."

She guided Dana into the bathroom. Warm air and the scent of clean towels surrounded her. Brynn removed the blindfold. A basin had been prepared near the deep tub. Towels rested beside it. Dana looked at the arrangement.

"What are you doing?"

"Washing your hair."

Emotion rose more quickly than desire had.

"Why?"

"Because you have carried enough for tonight. Now you belong to me."

The words moved through Dana until her knees weakened. Brynn's gaze sharpened. "Color?"

"Green."

Brynn seated her beside the basin and tested the water.

She loosened Dana's hair, removed the remaining pins, and guided her head back.

The first stream of warm water crossed Dana's scalp.

Brynn worked shampoo through her hair with slow, firm fingers.

The touch was practical and intimate, caring and controlling in equal measure. Dana closed her eyes.

"Stay with me," Brynn said.

"I am here."

"What are you feeling?"

"Relief."

"Anything else?"

Dana swallowed.

"Grief."

Brynn's hands continued moving.

"For what?"

"The woman I was before the shooting."

"What happened to her?"

"She believed needing no one made her safe."

Brynn rinsed the shampoo from her hair.

"Do you hate her?"

Dana opened her eyes.

"Sometimes."

"Stop feeding guilt with lies."

The instruction was gentle and absolute. Dana's throat tightened.

"She kept you alive before I arrived," Brynn said. "She built the career, survived the campaign, and carried an office designed to consume everyone inside it. You do not have to remain her. You do not get to despise her for bringing you here."

Tears slipped toward Dana's temples. Brynn did not tell her to stop. She conditioned Dana's hair, combed through each strand, and rinsed it clean while Dana cried. When she finished, she wrapped Dana's hair in a towel and knelt carefully in front of her.

"Look at me."

Dana obeyed.

"What do you need?"

The answer came without preparation.

"Hold me until I sleep."

"Yes."

Brynn dried her hair and guided her into the bedroom. She helped Dana into soft sleep clothes, then lay beside her on top of the blanket because the medical restriction made certain positions uncomfortable. Dana turned toward her.

"Will you stay until morning?"

Brynn studied her.

"Is that what you need?"

"Yes."

"Then I will stay."

Dana rested against her shoulder. Brynn placed one hand over her ribs and held her through the last of the tears.

No sex occurred. No kiss. Dana fell asleep feeling more intimately known than either would have given her.

For one night, the country received no more of her. Brynn had decided it had enough.
