CHAPTER SIX
Dana woke beneath a wool blanket with her head resting against Brynn's shoulder.
For several quiet seconds, she did not move.
The bedroom was dim, with only a narrow line of morning light around the curtains.
The fire had burned down to a faint glow.
Beyond the walls, the retreat remained silent except for the distant movement of the protective detail changing shifts.
Brynn's arm rested around Dana's waist. They were both fully clothed.
After washing Dana's hair, Brynn had dried it slowly, guided her into the adjoining bedroom, and placed her beneath the covers.
Dana had expected her to sit beside the bed until sleep came and then return to the guest room.
Instead, Brynn had lain on top of the blanket when Dana asked her to stay.
Will you stay until morning? If that is what you need.
It is. Then I will stay. Dana had fallen asleep with Brynn's hand resting over her ribs, each steady breath against the back of her neck assuring her that the woman remained alive. Now Brynn was still asleep.
Dana had never seen her entirely unguarded.
Even in the hospital, pain and medication had not stripped away her awareness.
Her gaze had tracked entrances. Her attention had sharpened whenever anyone approached the bed.
She had remained an agent while tethered to machines.
Sleep softened her. The scar along her jaw was more visible in the early light.
Her hair spread across the pillow in dark waves.
The tension that ordinarily held her mouth in a controlled line had disappeared.
Dana wanted to touch the scar and continue downward to Brynn's throat.
She wanted to learn the shape of the woman beneath the dark suits and professional restraint.
The desire was no longer abstract. It warmed Dana's skin everywhere they touched. She raised one hand slowly. Brynn's fingers tightened around her waist. "Thinking about breaking a rule?" Dana stilled. "You were asleep."
"I was resting."
"You were breathing like someone asleep."
"I breathe professionally."
Despite herself, Dana smiled. Brynn opened her eyes. The humor faded as their gazes met. They were close enough that Dana could see the darker ring around Brynn's irises. Neither woman moved away.
"How do you feel?" Brynn asked.
"Rested."
"Anything else?"
Dana considered offering a safe answer. Brynn waited.
"Embarrassed."
"About crying?"
"Among other things."
"Be specific."
The quiet command changed Dana's heartbeat.
"I asked you to hold me while I slept."
"Yes."
"I do not ask people to stay."
"I know."
"I dislike that you know."
Brynn's arm remained around her. "What else?" Dana looked at the space between their faces. "I am aware of your body." Brynn became very still.
"I have been aware of it for some time," Dana continued. "This morning, the awareness is difficult to ignore."
Brynn's gaze dropped briefly to Dana's mouth. The response sent heat through her.
"You may move away," Dana said.
"That sounds like permission offered in the hope I will reject it."
"You interpret me with excessive confidence."
"You hide behind generous choices when you are afraid to ask for what you want."
Dana shifted onto her back. The loss of Brynn's body against hers felt immediate. Brynn pushed herself onto one elbow, protecting her injured side. Dana noticed.
"Pain?"
"Two."
"You are certain?"
"Yes."
The answer appeared honest. Dana looked toward the ceiling.
"I want you to kiss me." Silence followed.
She resisted the urge to revise the statement into something less vulnerable.
Brynn's hand moved from Dana's waist to the blanket between them.
"Why?" Dana turned her head. "Because I have wanted to kiss you for months. "
"That is better than yesterday's answer."
"I was not lying yesterday."
"No. You wanted reassurance more than you wanted the kiss."
"And this morning?"
Brynn studied her. "This morning, you want me." Dana's skin warmed. "Yes."
"Are you asking as president?"
"No."
"Because you believe you owe me something?"
"No."
"Because you are frightened I will leave if this does not become sexual?"
Dana considered the question carefully. "No." Brynn's expression changed by a fraction.
"Color?"
"Green."
Brynn leaned closer but did not kiss Dana immediately. Her hand rose to Dana's cheek, fingers settling along her jaw while her thumb rested beneath Dana's lower lip. The pause forced Dana to remain present inside the choice.
"You may change your mind," Brynn said.
"I have not."
"You may use the word we chose."
"I know."
"What word?"
"Enough."
Brynn's gaze held hers. Then she kissed her.
The first contact was gentle. Dana had expected Brynn's dominance to make the kiss demanding.
Instead, Brynn gave her time to understand the shape of it.
Her lips moved slowly against Dana's, warm and patient, asking nothing Dana had not already offered.
Dana lifted one hand to Brynn's shoulder.
Brynn caught her wrist before she reached it.
The interruption sent a pulse of desire through her.
"Keep your hand on the bed."
Dana lowered it. Brynn kissed her again.
This time, the control beneath the tenderness became unmistakable.
Brynn determined the pace, the pressure, and the moment the kiss deepened.
Dana followed because she had chosen to, relief and desire winding together.
She had kissed women who waited for her to lead.
Sylvia had once accused her of treating intimacy like another meeting in which she expected to set the agenda.
Dana had dismissed the observation as frustration spoken near the end of a marriage.
Now she understood. Brynn did not wait for instruction. She gave it.
When Dana tried to follow Brynn's mouth as she withdrew, Brynn's hand moved to her throat. The touch was light. No pressure restricted her breathing. It stopped her completely.
"Stay."
Dana remained against the pillow. Desire sharpened Brynn's expression, but so did restraint. Dana had rarely found restraint attractive. She had interpreted it as caution, indecision, or fear. Brynn's restraint felt like power held deliberately in reserve.
"Again," Dana whispered.
Brynn's thumb moved over the pulse in her throat. "That was a request."
"Yes."
"Ask clearly."
Dana's pride resisted even as her body responded.
"Kiss me again." Brynn did. The third kiss erased the retreat, the detail outside, and the office waiting beyond the weekend.
Dana surrendered to the pressure of Brynn's mouth and the hand resting at her throat.
She stopped considering what should happen next because Brynn had assumed responsibility for it.
The relief was almost as intense as the desire.
Brynn ended the kiss before Dana wanted it to stop.
"Why?" Dana asked.
"You stopped breathing normally."
"I was occupied."
"You were disappearing."
The phrase chilled some of the warmth in Dana's body.
"I was not."
Brynn continued watching her. Dana recognized the demand for honesty.
"I stopped thinking," she admitted.
"That is not automatically dangerous."
"Then why stop?"
"Because there is a difference between putting down responsibility and abandoning yourself."
Brynn's hand left Dana's throat and settled over her heart.
"You remain here," she said. "With me. You feel what is happening, and you choose it. I will not turn submission into a place where you cease to exist."
Dana looked down at the hand against her chest.
"You make everything sound like a rule."
"Rules create safety."
"They also create confinement."
"Only when you cannot leave."
Dana met her gaze. The word remained available. Enough. A boundary no title or gratitude could erase. Dana touched Brynn's wrist. "I do not want to leave."
"Good."
The approval moved through her with startling force. Brynn noticed. "You like that word." Dana considered denying it. "Yes."
"Why?"
"Because I spend every day being told that something is insufficient. The response is inadequate. The policy is incomplete. The funding is too little. The risk is too high. The compromise does not go far enough. When you say good, it feels finished."
Something softened in Brynn's expression.
"You are not a completed task."
"I know."
"You will not earn affection by obeying perfectly."
Dana's mouth tightened. "I did not say I would."
"You did not need to."
Dana looked away. Brynn waited until she returned her attention.
"Submission is not another performance at which you must excel," she said.
The statement reached a place Dana preferred not to examine. She had already begun measuring herself. She had followed the instructions, finished meals, slept when told, used honest words, and remained still beneath Brynn's touch. Part of her had expected that success to guarantee approval.
"What happens when I disappoint you?" Dana asked.
"You will."
The immediate answer offended her. Brynn's mouth curved slightly. "I will disappoint you too. We are not constructing perfection."
"That seems inefficient."
"It is a relationship."
Dana exhaled. Brynn leaned down and pressed a brief kiss to her forehead.
The tenderness carried none of the heat of the earlier kisses.
It affected Dana more deeply. A sharp vibration sounded from the bedside table.
Both women stilled. Dana's secure phone illuminated the dark wood.
The presidency entered the room. Brynn moved away first. The transition was immediate.
Her hand left Dana's chest. Her posture changed.
The private authority disappeared behind the controlled attention of an agent who understood what that alert meant. Dana sat up and reached for the phone.
