CHAPTER TEN

Dana woke to the unfamiliar sensation of being watched without danger.

Her eyes remained closed. She knew the difference between the vigilant attention of an agent and the private attention of a lover.

The first rested on doors, windows, hands, distances, and the invisible geometry of risk.

The second rested on her. No assessment.

No calculation. Only attention. Brynn's fingers moved lightly through the hair near Dana's temple.

"You are awake," she said.

Dana kept her eyes closed. "You cannot know that."

"Your breathing changed."

"You place too much confidence in your ability to interpret me."

"You become argumentative before opening your eyes."

Dana smiled despite herself. Morning light pressed faintly against the curtains.

The room remained warm beneath the blankets, though the fire in the adjoining sitting room had gone cold hours earlier.

Dana lay with her cheek against Brynn's chest and one leg resting between Brynn's.

Her body remembered the night before in separate sensations: a mild ache in her knees, tenderness between her thighs, a faint stiffness in her wrists, and the deeper awareness of having surrendered completely and awakened still entirely herself. Dana opened her eyes.

Brynn looked down at her. Her hair was loose and disordered from sleep.

Without professional clothing, controlled posture, or the severe composure she carried through public spaces, she appeared younger.

Softer. Not less powerful. Dana traced the line of the shirt across Brynn's chest. "How long have you been awake? "

"Twenty minutes."

"You should have woken me."

"Why?"

"The intelligence briefing."

"Begins at eight."

Dana turned toward the clock. Seven twelve. Her body stiffened automatically. Brynn's hand settled at the back of her neck. "You have time."

"I need to shower, dress, review the overnight summary, and—"

"Dana."

The quiet interruption stopped the list. They had not ended the dynamic.

Dana remembered that slowly. The office remained outside until she said otherwise.

Brynn's authority still surrounded her, not because morning had failed to arrive, but because Dana had chosen to remain within it. She exhaled. "I have time."

"Yes."

Brynn continued stroking her hair. Dana settled again, though the clock remained visible over Brynn's shoulder.

"You said I would wake at seven."

"You did."

"You allowed me to remain in bed for twelve additional minutes."

"I am capable of adapting a schedule."

"That is dangerously flexible."

Brynn's mouth curved. Dana studied her face. "Are you in pain?"

"One."

"From last night?"

"From sleeping in the same position for several hours because you attached yourself to me."

Dana lifted her head. "You could have moved."

"You were asleep."

"That is not a physical restraint."

"It was emotionally persuasive."

Dana looked toward Brynn's left side. "Did I put pressure on the scar?"

"No."

"Are you certain?"

"Yes."

Dana searched her expression for evasion. Brynn watched the inspection patiently. "You are trying to conduct a medical assessment through eye contact."

"I am determining whether you are telling me the truth."

"I promised to tell you when the pain changed."

"Yes."

"I am keeping that promise."

Dana nodded. Brynn's fingers moved from her hair to her cheek. "How do you feel?"

"Rested."

"Physically."

Dana considered each sensation. "My wrists are stiff. My knees are sore but not painful. I am tender between my legs."

"Pain level?"

"One. No bleeding or anything concerning."

Brynn nodded. "Emotionally?" That answer was more difficult. Dana lowered her gaze to the hand resting against Brynn's chest. "I do not know. I feel quiet. Exposed."

"Badly?"

"No. I remember everything I said. Everything I asked for. I remember being on my knees and knowing you could see how much I wanted it."

"Yes."

The repeated agreement stripped the confession of drama without reducing its importance. Dana looked up. "You are not embarrassed for me."

"No."

"Not even slightly?"

"No."

"I said things I would never say under ordinary circumstances. Explicitly."

"You stated what you wanted."

Dana narrowed her eyes. "You appear pleased by that."

"I am, because you did not force me to guess. You trusted me enough to use words even when the words embarrassed you."

Dana absorbed the answer. The night had not been a test of how much she could endure. It had been a test of how honestly she could participate.

"What did you think when I asked you to touch me?"

"That I wanted to."

"That is all?"

"No. I thought you were beautiful on your knees. I thought your trust was more intimate than your nakedness. I thought I needed to remain careful because wanting you made restraint more important, not less."

Heat moved through Dana despite her tenderness.

"Did you want to keep going after I used yellow?"

"Yes."

The immediate answer steadied her.

"Were you disappointed?"

"No."

"You wanted more."

"Yes."

"Yet you were not disappointed."

"The fact that I desired more did not make what you gave insufficient."

Dana looked away. The statement reached beyond sex. Brynn saw it. "You are doing it again."

"Doing what?"

"Turning affection into a standard you must meet. You asked whether your limit reduced my satisfaction."

Dana opened her mouth, then closed it again.

"Yes."

Brynn touched the underside of her chin and guided her gaze back. "You used yellow. I stopped. That was not a failure in the scene. It was part of the scene."

"I know."

"Have you accepted that?"

"I am learning."

"That is honest."

Dana looked at her mouth. "Would you have allowed me to touch you if I had not used yellow?"

"Not last night."

"Why?"

"Because I had decided the first sexual exchange would center on your surrender."

"That sounds suspiciously close to a performance with a single outcome."

"No. It was a structure."

"What is the difference?"

"A performance fails if the expected result does not occur. A structure changes according to the people inside it. You became overwhelmed, asked for a change, and the structure changed."

Dana considered the distinction. Brynn's hand moved down her back. "Next time may be different." Dana's pulse shifted. Brynn noticed. "You are thinking about it."

"Yes."

"What are you thinking?"

The old impulse to conceal rose. Dana deliberately ignored it.

"I am thinking about touching you. Seeing you undressed. Learning whether your control changes when the pleasure belongs to you."

Brynn's breathing changed beneath her palm.

"I am wondering whether you would permit me to make you lose control."

Brynn's hand stilled against her back. "That is not the goal."

"I did not say it was. You sound as though you would enjoy my attempting it."

"I would."

Brynn held her gaze for several seconds.

"You will have the opportunity to touch me," she said.

"When?"

"Not this morning."

Dana glanced toward the clock. Seven nineteen.

"The briefing is not until eight."

Brynn's eyebrow lifted. Dana felt the absurdity of attempting to fit sexual exploration into a forty-one-minute presidential window.

"I withdraw the suggestion."

"Good."

"You enjoyed refusing me."

"Yes."

Dana smiled. Brynn leaned down and kissed her. The kiss was slow and warm, without the control of the previous night. Dana lifted her hand to Brynn's face, tracing the familiar scar with her thumb. Brynn allowed the touch. When they separated, Dana remained close.

"Were you satisfied with the way I participated?"

"Yes."

"Were there things I should do differently?"

"A few. You held your breath whenever you expected pain."

"I did not realize that."

"I know. You also tried to move toward my hand after I told you to stay still."

"I corrected myself."

"Yes."

"Then why mention it?"

"Because you asked."

Dana accepted the point.

"You also said no when you meant do not stop."

Dana's face warmed. "I corrected that too."

"You did. But inside a sexual exchange, no must always mean no. If you want me to continue, say continue. If you dislike a change, say what you need. We cannot allow a word associated with stopping to mean the opposite."

Dana nodded.

"That rule applies outside scenes as well," Brynn said. "No teasing with it. No using it to provoke a reaction."

"Agreed."

"What else do you remember wanting to change?"

Dana thought back through the night. "The restraint."

"What about it?"

"I liked it."

Brynn waited. Dana sighed softly. "You are going to make me be precise about every answer for the rest of my life."

"Possibly."

"The restraint made me feel safe because I had stopped being responsible for what happened next."

"Anything negative?"

"My fingers tingled. I think I tightened my hands."

Brynn nodded. "Next time, we check more often and change the position sooner."

"Not eliminate the restraint?"

"Would you prefer that?"

"No."

"Then we adjust."

Dana relaxed.

"What about the pain?"

"The pain was good. It sharpened the pleasure without overwhelming it."

"Would you want more?"

Dana considered the question carefully. "Yes, but gradually."

"Good."

The word warmed her. Brynn looked toward the clock. "Seven twenty-six." Dana groaned quietly. Brynn's mouth curved. "The president returns."

"Not yet."

"You need to shower."

Dana tightened her arm around Brynn's waist. "Three more minutes."

"That sounded like a request."

"It was."

Brynn considered it. "Two."

"You negotiate badly."

"I have leverage."

"What leverage?"

"You do not want to leave this bed."

Dana could not dispute that.

"Two minutes," she agreed.
