R aven opened her eyes.
The relief that flooded me flowed like liquid fire beneath my skin, hot and heavy.
“Raven.” I clutched her closer, my fingers opening and closing against her skin, my eyes devouring her face as she blinked in confusion. The unnatural glow in her eyes hadn’t dimmed, but at least they were open.
“Something just happened,” Raven whispered. Her voice leaked dread and her eyes filled with tears as her Sight returned from the Threadworld.
“What happened, Raven? What?” It didn’t matter what it was, I thought. We’d take it on together.
I glanced at the gathered crowd. I'd given them no thought at all when I gathered Raven in my arms and screamed her name, but now that she was alright, I worried for how this would look. My eyes settled on Priest Farad. I didn’t know why the man had come along, but I knew I didn’t like the intensity in his gaze as he watched us.
“An escape.” She shuddered and I almost cried at the expression in her eyes. So young, so lost. Like a child left alone in the dark. “I tried to put it off.” She sounded desperate to make me understand.
“To put what off?”
“I’m sorry,” Raven said. “Time’s up,” and then I felt her dagger slither into my unprotected stomach, its tip easily slicing through my skin and into the space between my ribs, heading straight for my heart.
