Chapter 3 Warden’s Rescue

Warden Shang Xu saved me. He carried me, who had sprained my ankle, into his bedroom.

There was only a bed and a desk. Everything was spotless.

He gently patted my uncertain self. "Do not be afraid."

I nestled in his arms and greedily inhaled his scent.

After a moment, he let go to get the medicine.

On the desk was a photo frame turned face down.

I rose on tiptoes to peek.

A cold voice came from behind. "Do you not know from school not to touch your superior's things at will?"

We had been childhood sweethearts. Nothing like this now.

He had decided to draw a line.

I turned stiffly. "Then I will leave first."

As I passed him, he grabbed my hand and pressed me onto the chair. He held my foot and applied the medicine.

His fingertips were rough and burning.

My toes curled involuntarily.

Warden Shang Xu's voice was hoarse. "Now you have seen the terror here. Stop making trouble. Go home. Your aunt must be worried about you."

The little warmth vanished.

I pulled my foot away in pain. "You do not need to care! Who are you to me!"

Warden Shang Xu's eyes grew cold again. He sneered, "If you cannot even handle Fu Yanan, the next one will be harder to deal with."

Mentioning Fu Yanan, the terrifying memories from last night resurfaced.

I did not want Warden Shang Xu to look down on me, so I lifted my chin and replied defiantly, "Then just wait and see."

After striding out of his room, I spent the night preparing for the second inmate.

I gathered weapons: knives, pepper spray, stun batons.

But when I met him, I realized none were necessary.
