Chapter 38

Harmony balanced her phone between her shoulder and ear while staring out the window of her downtown apartment.

"I still can't believe yo ass moving to L.A.," Tiffany said.

"Girl, I can’t believe it either." She shook her head.

Over the last year and a half, her life had changed in ways she never expected. What started as a random conversation with Shonda Mills after touring Nick's apartment had turned into a mentorship that completely changed her outlook on money.

Instead of spending every dollar she made, Harmony started investing.

With Shonda's guidance, she used the money she had saved from dancing, gifts she'd received over the years, and earnings from other ventures to purchase her first property. Then another and another.

By the time she realized what was happening, she had built a small portfolio that was generating more income than she ever made dancing.

"I ain't gonna lie, I'm proud of you," Tiffany admitted.

"Awwww! Thank you."

“So… What Shonda got you looking at out there?" Tiffany asked.

"Multi-family properties mostly, and a couple of commercial spaces too."

"Damn."

"That's exactly what I said."

After hanging up, Harmony set her phone down and glanced at the stack of paperwork sitting on the kitchen island. Between property inspections, closing documents, and meetings with lenders, she felt like she spent more time doing business than anything else those days. But she loved it.

"Bae, if we don't leave now, we gon’ miss our flight." Nick’s voice sounded from behind her.

"Okay, okay. I'm ready. All I gotta do is grab my purse."

After grabbing her Louis V., she did one final walk-through of the apartment, making sure the lights were off and everything electronic was unplugged. Satisfied, she joined Nick at the front door.

A few minutes later, they were riding down the elevator and heading outside, where a black truck was already waiting for them. Once inside, Harmony settled into her seat while the driver pulled away from the curb.

The trip to O'Hare felt much longer than forty minutes. Between traffic and the fact that they were already cutting it close, Harmony spent most of the ride checking the time and silently hoping they didn't miss their flight.

When they finally arrived, they grabbed their bags and practically ran inside. By the time they made it through TSA, Harmony was convinced they weren't going to make it, but somehow, they did, with ten minutes to spare.

"I gotta use the bathroom, I’ll be back," Harmony told Nick.

"Don't miss the flight."

"I won't."

Leaving him at the gate, she headed toward the nearest restroom. Luckily, there was only one person ahead of her in line. A few minutes later, she went inside the stall, relieved herself, and washed her hands before heading back toward the exit.

The moment Harmony stepped out, she nearly ran straight into two familiar faces, Legend and Skyy. Her eyes moved between them briefly before she tried to keep walking. She had barely made it a few steps when Legend called out to her.

"Damn, Ms. Young, you can’t speak."

"It's Mrs. Davis… And nah, I can't." She flipped her hair and rolled her eyes before joining her husband at the gate.
