Chapter 14 - First Awakening

The morning air was crisp, the faint scent of pine drifting through the training grounds as I went through the drills Cabir and Dhruv had laid out. I had begun to feel lighter, more aware, almost as if my body and mind were responding differently than before.

Every movement, every step, carried a subtle awareness of something just beneath the surface—an energy I couldn't yet name, but felt every time I glanced toward Manik.

He had been observing me silently, standing just at the edge of the clearing, Shadow coiled tightly within him, restrained but aware.

The faint pull I felt around him now had a physical weight, pressing against the inside of my chest, threading warmth along my arms, a quiet insistence that made me more attentive than I had been in years.

During a brief pause, Manik stepped closer under the guise of adjusting my stance.

His hands brushed mine as he guided me, small, careful movements that the others were too far away to notice.

The instant our skin touched, a strange resonance coursed through me, subtle but undeniable.

My chest fluttered, and I felt a shadowy presence brush the edge of my consciousness, a quiet pressure that was different from the way I usually sensed him.

I froze, instinctively pulling back, though not completely. "What... was that?" I whispered, more to myself than to him.

Manik's grip tightened slightly around my hands—not forceful, just grounding—and I could feel him tense beside me. "Nothing you need to worry about," he said, his voice calm, though there was an edge of tension I could feel.

But I did worry. The presence that brushed against me had been something familiar and powerful, far beyond anything I had felt before.

My stomach tightened with a mix of awe and fear, and a part of me recognized it. Something inside me—the shadow that had lingered faintly since the balcony moment—had responded.

It was only a flicker, nothing close to full transformation, yet it was enough.

I had been watching her carefully, waiting for the right moment. The pull of the bond was impossible to ignore any longer, and I needed confirmation. When I finally held her hands, guiding her gently, the shock hit me almost immediately.

There it was—her wolf. Not fully manifested, not something I could name, but undeniable. A shadowed, urgent presence, quietly pressing against mine, brushing at the edges of Shadow's awareness.

My chest tightened. I hadn't expected this—not now, not like this. The moment lingered, a dangerous teasing of what lay beneath, and I forced myself to release the pressure before anyone could notice.

Her pulse thrummed beneath my fingers, her warmth radiating in a way that made Shadow stir restlessly, curious and protective. For the first time, I truly felt her wolf—not in full form, but a presence so potent that it made my heart race and my mind reel.

When I finally let go, I stepped back, masking my reaction behind my usual calm exterior. "Continue the drills," I said, my voice steady. Inside, my thoughts were chaotic.

She was something entirely new. Something powerful. And the bond—the mate bond—was more real and undeniable than I had ever imagined.

Later, as I wiped the sweat from my brow and straightened my back, I felt the subtle shifts in energy around me more keenly.

Alya and Cabir glanced at me, their expressions faintly puzzled but unspoken. They weren't sure what they were sensing, and I couldn't explain it either. All I knew was that I felt different—stronger, more aware, and intimately connected to something I had only just begun to understand.

Even Mukti noticed, though she kept her words careful and gentle.

"You seem... lighter today," she observed as I passed by her in the hallway. Her hand brushed my shoulder briefly, and I felt a ripple of that presence again, subtle, like a sigh from within me.

Abhimanyu, standing just behind her, frowned slightly. "You're more... focused," he added. "Something's different."

I could only offer a small, tight smile. "I'm... adjusting," I said, trying to sound casual, though my chest burned with the memory of that fleeting connection with Manik, the pulse of Shadow, and the strange presence inside me that had answered to him.

That night, I found myself alone in my study with Cabir leaning against the doorway.

"I felt it today," I said, keeping my voice low. "The wolf—her presence. It's unlike anything I've ever sensed."

Cabir whistled softly. "So it's real then. You feel it too?"

I nodded. "I do. But this is dangerous. It's not supposed to happen—mate bonds don't work this way. She was rejected once. That bond should have been broken. Yet Shadow... he recognised her. And I... I felt it too."

Cabir's brow furrowed. "You planning on talking to your parents about it?"

I leaned back, rubbing my face. "Yes. I did talk to them already. If what I feel is real, it's forbidden. But... I can't ignore it."

The thought lingered like fire in my chest. I had underestimated the strength of her presence, the wolf that stirred even faintly, and the connection that now pulsed between us.

The forbidden bond had awakened, subtly, quietly—but its intensity was undeniable.
